All businesses will be closed, transport services etc. will run a reduced service, services remebering the dead and suffering will take place. Books of Condolences have been opened all over the country and donations are being collected to help those who need it. Mj |

I went out and about today and it was as though I was in a surreal landscape. My mind kept thinking how can these people carry on business as usual, why aren't they mourning and being solemn? My steps were measured and slow, every movement deliberate, yet not thought out, numbed and subdued. One thing is that we're having a 3 minute silence at 11am. We quite often have 1 or 2 minute silences, this will be the first 3 minute one I know of. Subject: RE: National Day of Mourning From: Susanne (skw) Date: 13 Sep 01 - 06:08 PM Nothing quite as big, but most of Germany observed a five-minute silence this morning (roughly 5pm US time, don't know about the time zones), and during the past two days many people have gathered outside the American Embassy in Berlin and other buildings to pay their respects. There have been memorial services all over germany, tonight a chain of lights in honour of the victims was formed here in Kiel, and there have been calls for lights in windows on Saturday. Many people over here are afraid this may turn into a major war, and I'm sure many more are praying for peace in their hearts. No good for anybody will come of the destruction of yet more innocent lives. I'll put candles in my windows on Saturday and think of those who died horribly, and those who live on. |

Subject: RE: National Day of Mourning From: Rt Revd Sir jOhn from Hull Date: 13 Sep 01 - 06:53 PM As far as I know the day of mourning is to be Europe wide, I have just heard on the radio that all TV & radio channels are to observe a 3 minute silene at 11 AM UK time Friday, as somebody said earlier, a 1 minute silence is usual on remembrance day (11th November), but this is the first time we have ever held a 3 minute silence. |

For some reason, for me, tears aren't coming easily about all of this. But whenever I read a post about things like this, some tears come, and it feels like a healing thing.

The innocents who die in any war deserve the same. This particular day, tomorrow, will be for the ones who were taken by the Sep 11th attacks. I have just learned (I now live in Scotland) that pubs across Ireland are to close for the day. No one is complaining about this, everyone feels it is right to close offices government depts. and yes even our pubs as a mark of respect. We can all have a drink together in better times. There was nothing planned, and term hasn't started yet so there aren't many about, but about 30 people gathered spontaneously to keep the Silence. I also see that there was a prayer service on Wednesday afternoon, "A Time of Prayer for the People of America" (which I missed as I was away). I've also just seen in the Toronto Globe and Mail (on-line)that Canada's day of mourning is the first since 1967. Also, in Brussels, Romano Prodi, president of the EU's executive commission, will lead a 3-minute silence; 14 other EU candidate nations have also been invited. In Asia, "South Korea has declared a national day of mourning, the first time it has done so for another country. And in Africa, the Portuguese-speaking nation of Cape Verde — located off the coast of Senegal — has made a similar declaration." There are a lot of people sharing your grief. sian, west Wales

The young lady who sang "America the Beautiful," accompanied by an excellent 12 string guitarist was excellent and the show of unanimity among so many faiths was a sight to see. DougR |

Both for the massive death toll of Americans and for the, so far, 91 missing Australians. Our gov't has also reaffirmed our obligation under the ANZUS treaty, a treaty between the US, Oz & NZ for mutual support & assistance in times of war. Because we supported the effort in the Gulf War, with a military presence, we also feel threatened by Middle-East generated terrorism. Our military has gone up one step in its degree of readiness, to State Amber. Our Prime Minister, John Howard, was in Washington DC when the Pentagon was hit.
