Subject: RE: BS: people arguing to much From: catspaw49 Date: 15 Sep 01 - 11:03 PM He has a birthday thread guys and I understand he's getting head for his birthday! Pretty good gift I'd say!!! Spaw |
Subject: RE: BS: people arguing to much From: Jeri Date: 15 Sep 01 - 11:04 PM I understand some argument, but I'm afraid I agree with John in Hull. I've seen a few comments of "what did you mean by that" recently, and got the feeling the question wasn't aimed at understanding what someone had said, but looking at something they could argue with. I've seen folks choose the most miniscule detail to pick a fight over. Forgive me, but that endless thing about how cats shouldn't be allowed to kill - not a discussion, mind you, but a debate - that was just plain silly. I personally like having some threads which are discussions. I sort of miss them. (You know - ones where a person posts something about their own experience and then others share theirs or comment.) |
Subject: RE: BS: people arguing to much From: Jeri Date: 15 Sep 01 - 11:12 PM ...here I was being all serious. Happy Birthday John!!! |

Subject: RE: BS: people arguing to much From: catspaw49 Date: 15 Sep 01 - 11:14 PM I do know what you mean Jeri........Cats? How did I miss that one? I am grateful nonetheless that I did....sounds like real jewel. Actually, in many ways during this past week, we have had some excellent discussions with well thought out postings, especially after the initial shock of Tuesday wore off. Pretty much many agreed to disagree at times, but it was very well reasoned discussion.....very little anger. Spaw |
Subject: RE: BS: people arguing to much From: catspaw49 Date: 15 Sep 01 - 11:17 PM John, you may get some argument from Jeri since she ain't a guy.......her choice of course.......I mean the argument, not being female....Although I suppose that could be thought of as a choice to, what with medical technology and all............ Spaw |
Subject: RE: BS: people arguing to much From: wysiwyg Date: 15 Sep 01 - 11:20 PM This is a perfect example of the diff between a member saying something and a guest making trouble-- John's had an opinion and a bit of a party, and is willing to say so, and we just love him for it! Cuzm=, we know him to be a fine fellow and all. Happy Birthday John! (I'm a girl too.) ~Susan |
Subject: RE: BS: people arguing to much From: Jeri Date: 15 Sep 01 - 11:28 PM Spaw, when I was in 7th grade, they accidentally put me in a boy's gym class because of my name. I was really upset. Well, I was upset because they moved me to a girls' class. John, in the spirit of the evening, I'd like to say you're absolutely right. I never, ever argue. Ever. |
Subject: RE: BS: people arguing to much From: Rt Revd Sir jOhn from Hull Date: 15 Sep 01 - 11:35 PM Sorry Jeri, I thought you was a man ( In UK Jeri is mans name) now I know you is woman.john |

Subject: RE: BS: people arguing to much From: Rick Fielding Date: 16 Sep 01 - 12:07 AM Happy Birthday John. I NEVER argue on the net (nobody ever wins...one person just gets tired and goes to bed!) Subject: RE: BS: people arguing to much From: DougR Date: 16 Sep 01 - 12:11 AM Jeri: did you get to shower with the boys before they moved you? If so, you didn't drop the soap did you? **BG** John, don't get all out of joint. There's always some disagreement here on the "Cat" but everybody stays friends. Happy Birthday! DougR |
Subject: RE: BS: people arguing to much From: Jeri Date: 16 Sep 01 - 12:53 AM Doug! I was only around 14 years old - THAT would have scared me. Don't you sometimes wish you could take your current brain and confidence level, and transfer it back to your younger self? If you ever watch Star Trek Voyager, the woman who plays 7 of 9 is named Jeri. I look just like her. ;-) |
Subject: RE: BS: people arguing to much From: Troll Date: 16 Sep 01 - 02:06 AM I NEVER argue. I simply try to improve my fellows by pointing out their little errors and foibles.

Subject: RE: BS: people arguing to much From: Banjer Date: 16 Sep 01 - 06:12 AM What is the difference between 'arguing' and 'discussing'? Doesn't there need to be an 'argument' in order to have a 'discussion'? Isn't an argument a difference of opinion requiring a discussion to resolve it? The difference as I see it is which side of the fence you are on. A child who has a different opinion than his parent thinks he is 'discussing' the issue, while the parent sees the child as 'arguing'. If the parent wants to sit down with the little brat and 'discuss' something, it is later said by the brat that 'me and my parents got into an argument' (especially if said 'discussion' didn't go the way the brat would have wanted it to. |
Subject: RE: BS: people arguing to much From: Cllr Date: 16 Sep 01 - 06:24 AM John -Jerry is the spelling of the boys version (or Gerry)Jeri is the spelling of the female version both sides of the pond. Cor!
Surely anyway "guy" now is applied to women as well? Even "bloke" is sometimes, though I know Americans don't use that one (it's from Shelta I understand, a traveller patois). And "bird" can be used of men as well as women - PG Wodehouse did it all the time.
I like good arguments. I don't like quarrels. There's a big difference. |
Subject: RE: BS: people arguing to much From: Jim Dixon Date: 16 Sep 01 - 07:34 AM This would be a good time to have another look at Monty Python's "The Argument Clinic". (Here's a more complete version, but the first one is easier to read.) |

Subject: RE: BS: people arguing to much From: Little Hawk Date: 16 Sep 01 - 06:45 PM john in Hull - Good suggestion. One way to defuse arguments is to simply let the other person have the last word, despite that almost irresistible temptation to nail them with a marvelously apt (from one's own point of view) comeback. I have actually managed to do this the odd time. :-) And hopefully I will manage to again! When I do, I find it leaves me with a lot more time and mental energy for more harmonious activities anyway, so it's really worth it in the end. Cheers, - LH |

Subject: RE: BS: people arguing to much From: Rich(bodhránai gan ciall) Date: 16 Sep 01 - 07:45 PM I forget where it was now, but at a Dead show one time, there were 2 people selling arguments for a quarter. If you said you didn't need an argument, they said "Yes, you do!" A lot of people conceded and gave them the quarter. Sold better than my curried veggie burritos, in retrospect. Ditto Spaw's post about how amazingly thoughtful the discussions have been this week. Happy Birthday, John! Rich |
Subject: RE: BS: people arguing to much From: Linda Kelly Date: 17 Sep 01 - 01:05 PM It serves you right if your head hurts! (I was the only one-well apart from Jezebel and Bill/Sables ,who was sober and that's because I was the hostess with the mostest -bloody hell, it was past midnight and they even got napkins with their lasagne!- I spoke to some of the other Folk Train reprobates and they are also feeling the worse for wear John so you are not alone. Apparently Les and Cobble went to another session at the Black Boy pub on Sunday afternoon -have they no shame! |
Subject: RE: BS: people arguing to much From: DougR Date: 17 Sep 01 - 05:00 PM Yes, Jeri, if we could do that, we all have a lot of fun. I'm not a fan of Star Trek, and don't watch it on TV, but I'm sure gonna see if I can find a copy to preview. Got to see what Jeri looks like! DougR |
