Subject: Stephan Grossman versions From: GUEST,Brendy - out and about Date: 17 Sep 01 - 06:20 AM Yo! I played a gig recently with a guy I haven't played a note with in two years, and I'm still reeling from it! In the intervening years since we last talked, never mind played together, he had added some long forgotten songs to his repertoire plus a few of his own. It started to get me remembering of an old Stephan Grossman double album I once had - a Live one - and some of the songs, and rags that were on it. I have had a look in thre database, and there are 3 songs on the subject of 'Delia'. Anybody recognise it, and not too distracted with worldly things to kindly post the words? 'Satisfied and Tickled too', was another track from that album, where I have all/ or most of the words of....but not necessarily in the right order. This was one of those albums, along with some Irish trad albums that I played over and over, getting his riffs as best I could. I remember, for instance, a session in a pub in Ennis, many years ago, where a blues head beat out 'Powder Rag'. He played it in a dropped D, and told me that Grossman recorded in that tuning. Trouble was that I had been always under the impression that he was in DBGDBD, and I played it accordingly. Both tunings worked perfectly, with the bass runs easily accessible. But if anyone could help me ressurrect these songs, I would be eternally grateful. Take care out there. B. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Stephan Grossman versions From: GUEST,frankie Date: 17 Sep 01 - 06:13 PM Hi Brendy, The think the first tune you mentioned was Rev. Gary Davis' version of "Delia", which resembled his "Cocaine" in the opening bars of the verse, that Stefan used to play. I've got the words at home and I'll post them later in the week if nobody else does. I'm not familiar with the second tune but the third one is probably Rory Blocks' arrangement of Powder Rag which he also recorded (on Yazoo Basin Boogie?) the tab for that use to be availble and probably still is somewhere. I learned it in Drop-D from a tab I got from Stefan Grossmans' Guitar Workshop many years ago. There is a forum a the Workshops' website called the Woodshed where you might be able to address these questions to Stefan directly. Good luck, frankie |

Subject: Lyr Add: DELIA (Stephan Grossman) From: Chris Amos Date: 18 Sep 01 - 01:58 AM Brendy, The words as best I recall them Delia was a gambling girl Gambled all around Delia, a gambling girl Laid her body down And all the Friends I ever had are gone Delia, Delia Gona ask around High Sherrif he came by Shot her to the ground And... Delia, Delia Made a lunge to run High Sherriff shot her down Great big gattlin gun Delias' mother weep Delias' father moan They wouldn't hate it so bad If their child died at home Rubber tyred carrage rubber tyred hack dun taken old po' Delia Never bring her back Men in Atlanta Trying to pass for white Delias in the grave-yard Six feet out of sight Delia, Delia How could it be Wanted everyone around you Never wanted me And all the friends I ever had are gone. Hope that's some help Memory is a funny thing, I went to a folk club recently and someone sang a verson of The cruel Ships Captain which was different to a version I had learnt 30 years ago. All the way home I tried to recall the words but could only get the first and last verses. In the middle of the night (with my brain in neutral I guess) I woke up and could recall it word for word. Cutty said to the judge, "What might be my fine?" "I done told you poor boy You got ninety-nine." She's all I got is gone. Up on the house top, high as I can see, Lookin' at those rounders Lookin' after me. She's all I got is gone. Curly lookin' high, Curly lookin' low, Shot poor Delia down With that April 44. She's all I got is gone. *David Bromberg also recorded this version.
