Subject: ADD: OH, GIVE WAY, JORDAN From: wysiwyg Date: 25 Sep 01 - 12:28 AM Masato, I added your addition above to the thread, "Spirituals Posted at Mudcat." I wonder if this is the same as "Give-A Way, Jordan" in a songbook I have never seen called My Songs. ~S~ |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: GET AWAY JORDAN From: masato sakurai Date: 24 Sep 01 - 12:24 PM I don't think these are the same, either. I posted it for comparison. By the way, "Get Away Jordan" has been a favorite number among gospel singers. Mahalia Jackson, Dorothy Love Coates, Davis Sisters, Rev. Cleophus Robinson, Roma Wilson, and the Fairfield Four (probably and others) recorded this song. ~Masato

Subject: RE: Lyr Add: GET AWAY JORDAN From: wysiwyg Date: 24 Sep 01 - 12:00 PM Thanks, Masato. It's hard to see if they are the same, since there is no tune for this one at the Park Choir site. Since so many of their pieces do not show up in the index of songbooks I have, it's hard to tell what their sources are. Hopefully as the overall project shapes up we will be able to invite them to come discuss some of these with us! (Of course my index is not complete yet, so maybe this and others will turn up as more indexes come my way.) ~S~ |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: GET AWAY JORDAN From: masato sakurai Date: 24 Sep 01 - 11:53 AM The chorus is similar to that of "Oh, Give Way, Jordan" in Hampton and Its Students (1874, p. 195).

Subject: GET AWAY JORDAN From: wysiwyg Date: 20 Sep 01 - 07:09 PM GET AWAY JORDAN Traditional Negro Spiritual REFRAIN: Get away Jordan, get away oh chilly Jordan Get away, Jordan Oh I wanna cross over to see my Lord Get back chilly Jordan And I wanna cross over to see my Lord You know I promised the Lord If He would set me free; I'll go on find out where the End might be; One day, one day I was walking alone; You know I heard a voice but I saw no one; You know the voice I heard sounded so sweet, child Come down from my head to the sole of my feet. You know one of these mornings it won't be long You've gonna look for me, child and I'll be gone; For a few more risings I'm sitting in the sun, Yeah This old battle be fought and a victory won You know a friend I used to love so dear; He go on the glory and he left me here; When my feet get cold My eyes shet; My body has been chilled By the hand of Death ; Talk Lord To the roof of my mouth. My head is falling across my breath You don't have to worry about the way I feel God allmighty told me He'll right be there Take me all in your wings of love Carry my soul to the Heavens of above They tell me the Jordan is deep and wide But I promised mother I'll see her on the other side.
