A dozen years have passed since that first post so I doubt that original device is in service, or if it is, it is no longer a mystery. But for information about that device and many more, my favorite research site it

http://www.manualsonline.com/

They've accumulated instruction manuals from as many devices as possible, and they no-doubt have an ongoing operation to accumulate and scan in more. Search on your device and see if you find the manual. Cameras, CD players, mp3 players, electronics of all sorts.

Hi-MD will certainly record mp3 and a number of other lossy formats to MD via SonicStage software.

Minidisc doesn't use mp3s, it uses a proprietary Sony format (much better sound quality than mp3 actually).

So what the OP asked cannot be done.

Hi There, I have been recording CD's to Mini Disc for as long as the MD's have been around , its very easy , first your Phono Leads must connect to the mini disc input , and the other end of the lead goes into the output of your CD player , turn on both machine's make sure your sound going into the mini disc is not to loud , and your away , what ever you have on the CD will come out the same on the mini disc, and that is how easy it is . I would say buy your self a MINI DISC cleaner
and a CD cleaner , as after a few recordings a little clean works wonders .

It's actually easier than that. You do NOt need special software there. If you do have the 700 with the optical link, it just plugs into your USB connector. It takes over the Sound output functions from your sound card. When you play a sound file, it goes out through this port instead of the speaker. If you have your recorder on Record (Paused, of course), it will automatically start recording. That's what I remember reading in the manual. There should be a second manual on using the DPC which comes with two cables, one for the USB port, and one to input to the MR700, which is a fibre optic cable.

Thanks, lads. I've found what's allegedly good CD ripping software, in the person of iTunes (now integrated into MacOS X, not that I have X, not likely), and am downloading that.

I think once I've made the mp3s I can just drag them into Toast and have it feed them into the yoke, the minidisc recorder. Hope so, anyway.

Didn't it come bundled with software? There should be a CD that has an installer for the minidisc players driver, and, at least, hopefully, a music player/ripper/library program like MusicJukeBox--As an example in MJ, you to rip the tracks from a CD by pressing the RECORD button, and then you can pull down the FILE menu and select SEND TO DEVICE which gives you a window where you can select the device you want to send to, and the MP3 files you want to send--there are a number of other similar programs that you can download from places like MP3.COM --easy to do yourself, or just find a teenager--

Thanks for the good links, which I'll try tomorrow.

Yes, the manual does say to connect the PC Link cable not to the USB port of my Mac but to a USB connector (I think also supplied with the minidisc) - it's more the software and the actual what happens when part that I'm finding difficult.

I suspect that most of the people the manual's aimed at are experienced with music files; I'm not, I've only ever used the minidisc recorder for recording interviews.

You might also like to take a look within the LINKS section of Mudcat and bring up in the drop down box HOME RECORDING. There, you will find some really good resource sites of which I am sure your questions can be answered.

You can access the LINKS section by clicking on it underneath the Mudcat logo at the top of the page - 3rd from the right.

To turn CD's into MP3's you need what's called "ripping" software.

I have a free one, which I like a lot. Look here:

http://www.tucows.com/mmedia/preview/214045.html

Then to save the MP3's on the minidisk, you need minidisk-"burning" software. That I can't help you with.

Maybe there's a web site with a good FAQ eh? Cosidering that if the manual doesn't tell you, it must be really poorly written...

what will probably be involved is ripping the mp3's from the original cd's... and then downloading the mp3's to the player via a USB connection... I doubt it'll play RealAudio format... (real audio is so crappy, I cn't imagine why you'd want to anyway... may as well listen to AM radio...)

An off the cuff web seach found this...

http://aaaprice.com/sonymzr700.html

and this

http://www.avland.co.uk/sony/mzr700/indexdpc.htm

that says... "Supplied with the DPC USB to digital optical PC linkup kit and software"

You should probably start here

http://www.minidisc.org/whole_page.html

good luck eh...

Subject: How do I record CDs on minidisc as mp3s?
From: GUEST,JTT

I have a Sony minidisc recorder which I use only for work. Recently it had a little accident and I had to replace it, and the salesman in the electronics shop persuaded me that what I needed was an MZ-R700 with a PC link.

This apparently means that I can turn the CDs I have into mp3s and then into some other format (RealAudio, maybe?) and put several CDs' worth of music on to one minidisc.

I was in such a panic about work as I snatched up the new recorder and ran out to rush home and type up some work from it, that I scarcely listened to what the man was maundering on about.

What *was* he maundering on about? Anyone know?
