Subject: Art went to the crossroads...
From: Art Thieme
Date: 31 Oct 01 - 07:14 PM

Years ago I went to the crossroads.
Satan took my shoes. (He wanted the soles.)

Then I went fishing and he stole my fillets.

I told him that in exchange I wanted him to give me what Woody had.

So now I'm a destitute, sick, old folksinger.

What's going on ???

Art Thieme

Folk music is a cruel mistress if it is ever counted on as a source of income. At least, that is what I have been told. The most I ever gleaned from a gig was $21, but I had to split it with my partner. For that reason, I chose to find other means for securing income.

I'm sure you know this story far better than I do, Art. The one thing that I know you can count on is that you are loved. That makes you as rich as anyone could ever be.

Side note here: If you ever really wanted to make some bucks, you could start selling that incredible library of "basement" tapes you have. It is an unbelievable treasuary of music!

ya' gotta be sharp when dealing with them forked-tongue rogues, Art...read the fine print! (me, I'm sorta healthy, but can't sing good or play the GEE-tar!)

What you have parcelled out, along the way, is more than that red-tailed, forked-tongue, silver-talking feller ever could dream of and for that you've got a whole lotta love going on, just like AllanC said. I know it doesn't pay the rent, but on a dreary, lonely night, if you close your eyes and listen, real close, you can hear us all singing your songs, sending you love and holding you dear in our hearts. You are a rare breed, not every one can say that, my darlin' Fine Art. Now forget them crossroads and dish us up a juicy, spooky tale for All Hallow's Eve, please?**BG**

there is even a law to explain it, Art...

"Whatever hits the fan is NOT distributed evenly"

you sure did an amazing amount for a good many years...Is it too late to find that crossroads, and can I have some deal-making hints? *grin*

PEOPLE,

ALL of my post was a >I>JOKE!!!! Not a serious wallowing in self pity as you all took it. So sorry if it came out other than I intended. I've been laughing all day wondering what hilarious things people stuck on here. Imagine my surprise...

I really was just playing eith "shoe soles" and "fillets of sole. NPR did a feature for Halloween on Robert Johnson selling his s..l to the Devil and how there are 3 different grave sites for the guy. It just started me extrapolating and I got carried away I guess. Woody was a folksinger and ill and not wealthy whgen he left this mortal coil. I was just thinking about what I'd ask for in Robert's situation since I was ALREADY "King Of The 9-String Guitar" and a legend in my own mind. **SMILE**

Again, sorry ! In the future I'll remember that humor is often completely lost when it's filtered through cyberspace.

Love to all,

Art

Thanks for the explanation, Art. I will admit that I didn't understand the message as it was intended. But, having said that, I still stand by what I said.

This raises the question of what any of the rest of us would trade for at the crossroads. My own wish would be to have the voice and the soul to do justice to the blues when singing them. I truly love the blues. It just sounds rather pathetic when I attempt singing them.

You would prefer being a rich, sick, old anything else? (e.g., middle manager, insurance salesman, cobal programmer)

Art, I don't think you'd be in a better position if you'd gone for Robert Johnson's life. At least find some guy that's alive!

Maybe a whole different route - you could have asked for James Brown's life, and you would have ended up with the soul!

(I once heard the Air Force's bluegrass band - yes, there is one - do a bluegrass version of "I Feel Good.")

Isn't Robert Johnson dead because he was messing with the wrong married woman? Now, that's an idea for a song ...

Oh, Sandberg already collected it --

Papa loved Mama
Mama loved men
Mama's in the graveyard
Papa's in the pen.

World's shortest folk song?

According to Annotated Mother Goose, those very short ones were for singing parties where the guy who couldn't sing needed a shortie when it was his/her turn.

I knowed ya was a'joking with us, Art. The first pun said it all.

Anybody besides me love the animated film, :The Devil and Daniel Mouse?" music by John Sebastian. "Look where the music can take you ..."

and a song from the heart beats the devil every time!

True story - the one piece missing from the Getaway was Art Thieme, at least for me. Some day...Meantime. Can I interest you in a slightly used pair of thongs, the sandal kind? Mick has first dibs on the satin ones.

Didja hear what skill Torquemada was best known for? Filet of souls.

I offered my cat filet of soles, but she won't eat leather.

Do ya 'spose there's a Master Shoemaker who repairs Old Souls?

Dear Obi Wan Thieme. I, in my pursuit of the elusive definition of folk music, as that is the meaning of life, understood your mystic writings completely. Would you be so good as to consider riding along with me next year to The Getaway so that I may complete my ascendency of the sole?

By the way, the Wanda Degan CD went in the mail today.

All the best,

Mick

Ya gotta hand it to old Art -- he's no heel and he gives tongue to the true sole without getting tied up in knots.

Years back I can recall at night at Lyman and Carolyn King's in Fulton New York. Our Art gave a house concert that went well into the shank of the evening. In a voice unaffected by brogues he sang on into the nite. As I recall he passed on a request for Loafer's Glory and was about to begin Travelin' Shoes when he broke a string. The recoil of the string layed back across his hand leaving a welt where it socked his thumb. Not missing a beat he began a song " Lovely Nancy had a shoe repair shop...." done accapella as he fixed the string. I watched and listened to Art that nite and thot, "Here is a guy with style."

I wonder now as the years have passed why Art's great talent is being wasted. Even if Art isn't up to playing just now if a workshop on stage craft and how to perform were offered at a festival I attended and Art were the instructor, I'd be in the front row.

Don Meixner

PS: I often wish that I could play banjo like Art. I don't have a clue what the style is but its perfect for the songs I do.

Well we knew! Art. I first heard you singing "That's the Ticket" way back in 1970-something. What is it with you and shoes? We sure are glad you are back. Regards Joy. H sends his too.

It's been mentioned before, but tonight (Nov. 15th) at 7PM CST some unreleased material by Art will be broadcast on Your Folk Connection. You can access it on streaming audio from krcu.org or kbia.org. I think the first 20 minute segment of the program (which lasts an hour) is all Art's material.

Art, I thank you so very much for allowing me to use some of your unreleased material on the show! The next question is, "When are you going to release another album even half a good as 'The Older I Get, The Better I Was' on Waterbug?" And the second question is, "Got any more unreleased stuff I can play?" :-)       jlh

Joybell, unfortunately Art has not yet returned. If you look at the date on his message above, you will note that it was over 2 years ago!
