Subject: Clearing a 'Worm' ?

A few of my regular correspondents , with whom I irregularly correspont, have been telling me lately, that they cannot open my e-mails because of a virus warning. Most others have no such difficulty but , still, I received an e-mail message , returned from my "Server" this week with a message advising me to have an anti-virus programme run. How can it be that not all my messages (and postings) are similarly affected. I confess to being a "self-taught" user who knows very little of the technology that I'm using. Should I buy an Anti-virus Disc or can I download some free software, from somewhere? TM

I believe you can download a trial version of Norton Anti-virus at wwww.symantec.com, but you should go ahead and purchase a good anti-virus program: it's definitely worth having one, and the trial downloads are usually 40-50MB. I've had very good sucess with Norton's products, but there are others, too. Once you've got your anti-virus program installed, connect to the manufacturer's website and download any available updates, re-boot your computer and run a full scan of all drives and memory. This should find your virus, and from this point you can follow your anti-virus software's instructions to get rid of the little pest. Once you've got the virus cleared, be sure to update your anti-virus software frequently. Norton's Anti-virus has a built-in routine that checks for updates, and I imagine other programs have this feature, too. Most anti-virus programs will also allow you to schedule automatic scans of your computer whenever you'd like.

I have Norton Internet Security (which includes the Norton autovirus), and it has well paid for itself. I have DSL, so my computer "has a presence" on the web, a sitting duck, so to speak, for hackers. Probably not one day goes by that Norton doesn't tell me that it's blocked at least one attack, and what kind it was. Wouldn't be without it.

If you visit 'Symantec's AntiVirus Research Center' (click here!) pages, you can download 'fixes' for most worms - free of charge. You need to know which worm it is, though. Usually the 'return' receipt will tell you.

The reason why not all your messages seem to be affected is the poor buggers haven't got protection either, and they've become infected, too!

Download the 'fix', then make sure you get protection!!

Forget the free down loads.Get you a Norton anti virus program for between $ 40.00 and $ 50.00 and after it is downloaded into your computer follow the instructions and you should be able to clear any viruses that exist on your computer. Then every week or so update and you should no longer have a problem. This program will cost you for updates $ 3.95 a year and Norton will bill you. This will be the best investment you will ever make as long as you are going to use a computer.Louie Roy

I am in full agreement with Louie Roy. Even experienced users with virus protection can be clobbered by viruses, but it is much less likely when the Norton program is running in the background. Don't fool with MacAfee--they don't update their virus definitions as often and don't work as well. Go buy yourself the Norton Antivirus program in one of its several forms, and use the live updates. This is important--you must keep updating it, but it is very easy to do. Well, not easy for everyone--I have one friend who gets confused by even small things like this--so I taught her 12-year-old grandson who lives with her how to update her Norton Antivirus, and it works fine.

Practice "safe email." Use protection!"

Install and run the anti-viral ASAP....then ..... Go to Gibson Research Center http://www.grc.com for a free online evaluation of your system's vulnerability.

Download the free version of Zone Alarm, (vital for all T's and DSL.) Trace back the URLs it records through http://www.samspade.org you will be shocked at the number eminating from China, Korea, Russia, and the Slovakias; hundreds in a week of 24/7. It IS a jungle out there!
