Subject: Manchester Mudcat Meet? From: Dave the Gnome Date: 04 Nov 01 - 06:53 AM Well, our festivals been and gone. There is a bit of time between now and whatever mid-winter celebrations you choose. Anyone fancy another Mancy Moot? Dates? preferences? Talking about Mancy - have we ever talked anout a Manx meeting? Could be great (Particularly if we start festivities on the ferry) :-) But that's for the future I guess. In the short term I suggest White Lion again - they now do food all day (well - till 7pm anyway) Saturday and Sunday. After the sucess of having the festival there all day last Saturday I guess Geoff and Liz would be more than happy to accomodate! Cheers Dave the Gnome |
Subject: RE: Manchester Mudcat Meet? From: Harry Basnett Date: 04 Nov 01 - 08:35 AM Sundays are out 'cos of our club but a Mancy Moot sounds very interesting. Keep us informed..... Harry. |
Subject: RE: Manchester Mudcat Meet? From: Matthew Edwards Date: 04 Nov 01 - 09:13 AM Nice idea Dave. Dates between now and Yule/Xmas/Midwinter are rapidly filling up, and for me personally the weekend of 7th, 8th, and 9th December is probably best, but if you can come up with some other definite date I will try to make it. Love the idea of a trip to the Isle of Man - maybe next year. I seem to remember there are a few outlying 'Catters there. |
Subject: RE: Manchester Mudcat Meet? From: Dave the Gnome Date: 04 Nov 01 - 06:47 PM Early December than. I will ask the good folk(ies!) at the Lion on Monday if 7/8/9 is OK. Watch this space;-) Cheers Dave |
Subject: RE: Manchester Mudcat Meet? From: Matthew Edwards Date: 05 Nov 01 - 05:24 PM Anybody else interested? I promise I won't mention yesterday's match result (Liverpool 3 Man.United 1)again! Has a general depression sunk over Manchester? Its not the leaving of Liverpool that grieves me... |
Subject: RE: Manchester Mudcat Meet? From: Harry Basnett Date: 05 Nov 01 - 05:36 PM City fans ain't depressed! |
Subject: RE: Manchester Mudcat Meet? From: Linda Kelly Date: 05 Nov 01 - 07:50 PM Matthew Edwards that was a needlessly cruel comment, shame on you!!!! I may be up for it-as the bishop said to the actress-more details on dates please. I wouldn't mind an Isle of Man trip . Got a job their once which paid an outrageous salary and concessionary taxation . Turned it down for a third of the salary, to live in Hull. (Now to be stupid once is forgivable but twice......) |
Subject: RE: Manchester Mudcat Meet? From: GUEST,8_Pints Date: 05 Nov 01 - 07:54 PM We're interested! Bob & Sue vG |
Subject: RE: Manchester Mudcat Meet? From: Linda Kelly Date: 05 Nov 01 - 08:30 PM Can't believe I spelt 'their' wrong in my previous thread but it is very late. Sue vG - can we have a wardrobe discussion before anything comes off -because we don;t want to duplicate do we! |
Subject: RE: Manchester Mudcat Meet? From: Dave the Gnome Date: 06 Nov 01 - 04:09 AM OK - we're on. 6/7/8 Dec. There are at least half a dozen of us so we can make a go of it!!! Hopefully now there is something firm more people will be interested. The upstairs room at the White Lion is available for whenever we want to use it. Free and easy up to now. I would suggest meeting Saturday lunchtime (1-ish) and taking it from there. Just an idea - how about Afternoon singaround. Local curry shop (Or into Rusholme:-)) for a meal. Evening singaround. Get back together Sunday lunch to see who's got the stamina! Anyone fancy a Friday night session as well? Any other ideas? Fancy dress? Unicycle workshops? I'm open to suggestions (Well most suggestions...) ;-) Cheers Dave
|
Subject: RE: Manchester Mudcat Meet? From: Matthew Edwards Date: 06 Nov 01 - 04:47 AM Aahhhh! The curry heaven of Rusholme. Yes, yes, yes. That is a must-do for the weekend. Saturday at the White Lion sounds great (How do I get there?), and a Friday evening session could be fun as well. How about trooping over to Harry's in Failsworth on the Sunday? Fancy dress? Why don't we just find out what Sue vG. and Ickle are planning to wear, and then all come in identical outfits? |
Subject: RE: Manchester Mudcat Meet? From: GUEST,Spot the Dog Date: 06 Nov 01 - 08:43 AM How about a more formal concert on Saturday giving Mudcatters who want it a longer more formal set. From 0800 to 1130 we could accomodate 10 x 20 minute sets. On the other hand an informal singaround could be just as much fun.... Spot |
Subject: RE: Manchester Mudcat Meet? From: GUEST,MC Fat Date: 06 Nov 01 - 09:03 AM Worth it to come over for Rusholme just for the curry most of the retaurants in 'curry mile' are good but my sproglet who's at Manchest Uni introduced me to the Sha Jahanwhich is one of the best meals I've had. |
Subject: RE: Manchester Mudcat Meet? From: Dave the Gnome Date: 06 Nov 01 - 09:05 AM Yet another good idea! There is no reason why we cannot mix the two. 'Open mike' concert spots for those as wish interspersed (sp?) with singaround and music sessions. sounds like a good do to me! Well volunteered, Spot;-) Cheers DtG |
Subject: RE: Manchester Mudcat Meet? From: GUEST,Spot Date: 06 Nov 01 - 09:26 AM Oooo's 'and you trying to get in the air Mr DTG...It was a suggestion not an offer...It gets so a person is frightened to open ones mouth without getting volunteered. On the other hand I would MC it if you needed me to. What we need is commitment from people before we book the WL. Spot |
Subject: RE: Manchester Mudcat Meet? From: Matthew Edwards Date: 06 Nov 01 - 09:43 AM Spot, it doesn't seem that booking is needed, as Dave said that the upstairs room at the WL is available anyway. However it would be helpful to get some idea of numbers, and to invite non-'Catters to participate as well. PS Harry, as a folk club organiser and a City fan, have you ever thought about applying for help from the Minority Rights Action Group? Next thing, you'll be telling us you're a Socialist as well!!!! |
Subject: RE: Manchester Mudcat Meet? From: Dave the Gnome Date: 06 Nov 01 - 10:06 AM Don't worry about Spot, Matthew, he's due for his injections next week so he will be better behaved by then...;-) Besides, he's just back from a weekend in Whitby and I was trying to con him into something before he sobered up but he 'spot'ted the trick! Good idea on the numbers. We will keep this thread open and hopefully have an idea in a week or two. The room at the 'Lion is OK for any number from 6 to 50 (but a bit crowded at the latter!) I spoke to Geoff (the landlord) last night and he said he had no plans for the room that weekend anyway. I think there will be a few non-catters from Swinton anyway (and some closet catters as well). Please feel free to bring along anyone from your respective areas as well - the more the merrier! Come on all you 'catters who missed the Swinton festival - catch up on some Old Tom;-) Cheers DtG |
Subject: RE: Manchester Mudcat Meet? From: Harry Basnett Date: 06 Nov 01 - 10:27 AM I'm not actually the organiser of the Open Door, Pauline Westall and her better half, John, take that dubious honour...I just try and mither people into coming along. Supporting City puts all the troubles of the world into perspective! :0) |
Subject: RE: Manchester Mudcat Meet? From: GUEST,MC Fat Date: 06 Nov 01 - 11:02 AM Harryoldham. You should try supporting a team like Dumbarton !! Now 'that' puts things into perspective. |
Subject: RE: Manchester Mudcat Meet? From: Linda Kelly Date: 06 Nov 01 - 11:37 AM Mmmmmm Rusholme Lamb Dupiaza -oh happy days!!!! Have no wardrobe worries now, because if we go for a curry I will probably spill so much down me that my clothing will become completely unrecognisable!Pass the poppadums!!! (At this stage I should say that as a Coventry City supporter, I have a great deal of empathy with Harryoldham -it was difficult enough being lousy in the Premiership but when your lousy in Division One -that's a complete bummer!) |
Subject: RE: Manchester Mudcat Meet? From: John J Date: 06 Nov 01 - 12:44 PM I'm up for it! John |
Subject: RE: Manchester Mudcat Meet? From: John Routledge Date: 06 Nov 01 - 01:27 PM And me - Rusholme especially!! Cheers John R |
Subject: RE: Manchester Mudcat Meet? From: Mrs.Duck Date: 06 Nov 01 - 01:31 PM Sounds good to me especially the curry bit. |
Subject: RE: Manchester Mudcat Meet? From: Linda Kelly Date: 06 Nov 01 - 01:43 PM John J -will it be shorts or will the legs be covered this time? |
Subject: RE: Manchester Mudcat Meet? From: Dave the Gnome Date: 06 Nov 01 - 02:46 PM If I wore shorts my legs would still be covered!!! Looks like we're on for it then:-) Cheers DtG |
Subject: RE: Manchester Mudcat Meet? From: Peter K (Fionn) Date: 06 Nov 01 - 07:29 PM I've been owing Noreen a hug for a long time now, but if you're set on 6-9 December, it's going to have to wait a little longer. |
Subject: RE: Manchester Mudcat Meet? From: Noreen Date: 06 Nov 01 - 08:17 PM Indeed it will have to wait, Fionn, as that weekend is already spoken for. Previous w/e would have been ok for me- but ne'er mind hey. (When did it turn into a hug?? I thought it was a pint you owed me? *grin*) Noreen |
Subject: RE: Manchester Mudcat Meet? From: Alio Date: 07 Nov 01 - 08:03 AM We're OK for it - sounds wonderful, especially with the curry first. Does that mean I can follow someone so I won't get lost? My navigational skills are famous....or should that be 'infamous'? |
Subject: RE: Manchester Mudcat Meet? From: John J Date: 07 Nov 01 - 10:57 AM Ickle Dorritt, how would you like my legs this time??? John |
Subject: RE: Manchester Mudcat Meet? From: Dave the Gnome Date: 07 Nov 01 - 11:26 AM I begining to think you have fell out with us, Noreen! Not available for the festival, not available for the gathering. And I thought all you students had nothing to do but sit in pubs all day anyway... See you soon anyway;-) Dave |
Subject: RE: Manchester Mudcat Meet? From: Noreen Date: 07 Nov 01 - 01:35 PM Not fell out, Dave, onnist! It's the hectic social whirl... and working part time to support myself while studying full time- you get the idea? Oh, and the odd weekend away for good behaviour! Nothing personal, truly. Will get to Swinton again soon, I hope, and best of luck with this jollity. Have an onion bhaji for me! Noreen |
Subject: RE: Manchester Mudcat Meet? From: 8_Pints Date: 07 Nov 01 - 02:50 PM You can count us in. If we were going to Rusholme for a curry, it would be logical to sing at the Ducie afterwards as it is just round the corner from Curry Mile! The landlord is very obliging and neither of his customers will mind! Ickle - further problems if you're known for spilling curry down your front, people will definately be unable to tell us apart! (I wear a lot of silk scarves - very useful for covering a multitude of spillages!) Sue vG and 8 Pints |
Subject: RE: Manchester Mudcat Meet? From: Dave the Gnome Date: 07 Nov 01 - 05:13 PM This sounds quite interesting - a wandering meeting! White Lion Fri night / Sat Afternoon. Rusholme Sat tea-time. Ducie Saturday night. Would the Open Door be interested in Sunday afternoon or do we repair to the Lion again? If we go for this we need to make everyone aware of the times and stick to them - or people might not find us. Then again, perhaps that's not a bad idea...;-) Alternativeley do we just stick with the Lion of course. I'm easy (so I'm told) Ideas? Votes? Concensus? Cheers DtG |
Subject: RE: Manchester Mudcat Meet? From: Harry Basnett Date: 07 Nov 01 - 06:47 PM I think the Open Door would be very interested in a Sunday afternoon....this is is evolving into a something of epic proportions, yes indeedy..... |
Subject: RE: Manchester Mudcat Meet? From: Matthew Edwards Date: 08 Nov 01 - 10:22 AM The Manchester Mudcat Ramble (with profound apologies to Ewan MacColl) The White Lion on Friday will sure be a high day, When 'Cats sing and play music as well. And if you are lucky, then down at the Ducie, There'll be many fine stories to tell. Then its Pauline's in Failsworth on Sunday, For the ones who can get out of bed; But I'll be trying to part with my curry, And feeling I'd rather be dead. Chorus: I'm a Mudcat, I'm a Mudcat, down Machester way, I get all my pleasure the musical way. I may be a wageslave on Monday, But I am a singer on Sunday. I love the idea of a peripatetic Meeting which seems to be developing. If I've understood correctly the schedule that is emerging looks something like this: Friday evening 7 Dec Singaround at White Lion, Swinton Saturday afternoon 8 Dec Open Mic at White Lion Saturday teatime Curry Heaven in Rusholme Saturday evening Music and Singing at the Ducie, Rusholme Sunday afternoon 9 Dec Open Door at Pauline's in Failsworth If this is correct, subject to any subsequent amendments, additions, etc etc then could some kind soul provide addresses of venues and/or directions to them. PS Spot, were you in Whitby for the Captain Cook Festival, and if so did we meet? Some of my memories of that weekend are a little hazy!! I have been told that I was dancing to reggae at 3am on the Sunday morning!!! |
Subject: RE: Manchester Mudcat Meet? From: Dave the Gnome Date: 08 Nov 01 - 11:46 AM I think that's about the measure of it, Matthew, unless there is any better ideas??? The White Lion is at 242 Manchester Road, Swinton, Manchester, M27 4TS and you can find a map HERE (All being well!) I will post my Mobile number nearer the time. Cheers Dave |
Subject: RE: Manchester Mudcat Meet? From: Harry Basnett Date: 08 Nov 01 - 02:56 PM Still waiting for confirmation from Pauline regarding the availability of the room at the Bulls Head for the Sunday afternoon.

Subject: RE: Manchester Mudcat Meet? From: Peter K (Fionn) Date: 08 Nov 01 - 06:39 PM I'm sorry to reduce a decent thread to such intimate detail, but Noreen has forced my hand. From the phenomenal archive that is Mudcat, it has been easy to establish that on 11 March this year, I said to Noreen: "I just wanted to give you a big hug for believing in (name airbrushed out to protect the innocent) against the flow." I said it by personal message, but should have told the whole world. Noreen replied in the warmest of terms, assuring me that both a pint and a hug await me in Manchester. In view of her heartbreaking memory lapse, I am glad of an opportunity to put the whole matter formally on record. |
Subject: RE: Manchester Mudcat Meet? From: Linda Kelly Date: 08 Nov 01 - 07:28 PM Is too premature to order the poppadums now? |
Subject: RE: Manchester Mudcat Meet? From: John Routledge Date: 08 Nov 01 - 07:35 PM Programme looks good. What is a poppadum and should I also order one now? |
Subject: RE: Manchester Mudcat Meet? From: Linda Kelly Date: 08 Nov 01 - 07:38 PM Don't just order one John -go for the full half dozen plus pickles!!!!! |
Subject: RE: Manchester Mudcat Meet? From: Noreen Date: 08 Nov 01 - 08:14 PM Oh Fionn, kiss and tell now is it? *grin* You are perfectly correct, and I had forgotten- not the exchange of PMs but the inclusion of the hug... Now, if I could just remember your gender... *LOL* |
Subject: RE: Manchester Mudcat Meet? From: Dave the Gnome Date: 09 Nov 01 - 04:01 AM Noreen I feel guilty at only arranging things when you are not there:-( Hows about a gathering in the land o'black puds? Some time in the new year - all you need do is find a venue and date (and provide said pudd'ns) and the Mudcat will do the rest! Half term? Do you have them at uni? Cheers DtG |
Subject: RE: Manchester Mudcat Meet? From: GUEST,MC Fat Date: 09 Nov 01 - 04:17 AM From previous experience at the Shan Jahan you don't even need to order popadoms they just bring them out with lots of pickles all free of charge. Now lets all sing together 'William Patels Overture' popadum popadum popadum dum dum dum....... |
Subject: RE: Manchester Mudcat Meet? From: GUEST,MC Fat Date: 09 Nov 01 - 04:25 AM Only meee again. My sproglet managed to 'con' an extra discount off the bill when a load of her and her pals celebrated a birthday at above Indian in Rusholme just a thought that the same might not just apply to 'unwashed ' students like what she is. Perhaps they'll do the same for ageing hippies like us. That along with free zimmer frame parking and a colostomy bag emptying site. |
Subject: RE: Manchester Mudcat Meet? From: Dave the Gnome Date: 09 Nov 01 - 06:03 AM colostomy bag emptying site!!!! Just put me right off my Jalfrazi...;-) Good point about the discount though, MC! On another semi-serious note. Wonder if any of the eateries have Music on and if so would they like to do an 'East meets West' do at some time? Does anyone have any contacts at any Rusholme establishments or with any Indian or Pakistani musicians? Good idea for helping the local community with cross cultural harmony possibly and may fit in nicely with the April charity concert we are hoping to achieve. Cheers DtG |
Subject: RE: Manchester Mudcat Meet? From: Anonymous Helper Date: 09 Nov 01 - 06:36 AM The best place for a curry in Manchester - and, indeed, the world - is The Great Kathmandu on Burton Road, West Didsbury. Just go there & see for yourself. |
