I sure would like to have the lyrics to this song from Norman Blake. I know, I should listen to it and write them down, but can't at this time.

Thanks, Jeepster

Jeepster, I don't know all the words to this one, but I searched on a couple of phrases as well as the title and I don't think it's on the net. I tried things like "with a hunger they did cry" which is reasonably nique and got no hits. Sorry.......but, uh, ....ahem.........it'd be pretty nice if you HAVE the album to get this one written down here for us..........ya' know?

...John Hartford does it too. I can write it down this afternoon if I'm not asleep....unless someone beats me to it...

The Blakes' version is more or less identical with the one linked by Sorcha. I transcribed it before seeing her link, so I'll post it for easier access. The Blakes attributed it to 'traditional', but the American Memory gives the actual credits:

I'M GOING TO LEAVE OLD DIXIE
(G.Cooper/C.A.White)

I'm a-going to leave Old Dixie, the times are getting bad
The fields are all deserted, the old man's heart is sad
I'd never quit the old home, but here I'd starve and die
It breaks my heart to leave you, old home goodbye

Chorus:
I'm a-going to leave Old Dixie's land
It breaks my heart to leave this home
But the children gather round me, with hunger they do cry
I'm a-going to leave Old Dixie, old home goodbye

I'm a-going to leave Old Dixie, it's here I'd like to stay
And rest these bones so weary when called from earth away
But all has gone to ruin and I am forced to fly
My tears for you are falling, old home goodbye

Chorus

I'm a-going to leave Old Dixie, but there my heart I leave
With hunger and misfortune, my wife and children grieve
Where I was once so happy, I now can only sigh
I am leaving you forever, old home goodbye

Chorus

Source: transcription from Norman and Nancy Blake 'While Passing Along This Way' Shanachie CD 6012 [1994].

It's easier to read, too. The print on the sheet music is fuzzybad! The dots are there, tho, if someone wants to make a midi.

I asked Google for "leave old dixie" and this was the first hit on the page. What I didn't know was whether Blakes I'm Going to Leave was the same as 'Gwine to Leave....turns out, it is. I found a short WinMedia clip of Norman singing it, and what I could understand seemed like the same song. Bob's your uncle!
