I should have known better than to believe them. Our cable company assured me our service would not go down without advance notice because that is what AT&T told them. Excite.com's @HOME went off at midnight last night. We are using Roger's workplace dial up, from home, so I will not be on very often until it gets sorted out. They say a "week or two!"

Anyway, for anyone who wonders why I don't answer a PM or email, it's just that I cannot use the station account for very long a stretch and my email addy is kaput for the moment. I will be checking my hotmail account when I get on, so you can reach me there, if need be. It is fullspoken@hotmail.com

Thanks a bunch. Any others with @home accounts who would like to post alternatve means to reach them, please feel free.

kat

I have an @home account here in Arizona,..and well so far so good,... this mornings paper was the first tome I had seen it in print, a friend from Oregon mentioned it about a week back, but I told her that surely that theres was an isolated incident. Like I said as for Arizona, so far so good. I dread the thought of sending all my contacts change of address notices. Peace! ~Biskit~

Boy, you're lucky, Biskit. I'd make alternative plans, if I were you. Also see the recent thread Amergin posted with info about the court which was ruling in San Francisco, yesterday. Evidently the judge ruled for Excite's creditors and shut them down with no advance notice. Thus, even though they told us we'd have advance warning, there was none!

Good luck,

kat

Maybe it's a Canadian thing, but my @Home provider gave me 3 weeks notice before shutting down, and gave me an easy to follow, talk-ya-through-it guide to transfer my email and web site accout over...

took me all of maybe 15 minutes to do it, and then I was able to totally forget about it...

Tell ya' CH, I think this may be one of the things you need to add to your next "Why Canada is Better" threads, because it seems that the several I've heard about in the states have all gone with little or no warning and the several in Canada I know about have been like yours.

CH, keep up the good work! I can't take the time for PM's right now, sorry.

Thanks!

I have noticed a lot of e-mail services (and sites) unavailable at the same time the 'cat was down.
my pet theory is they (pick a paranoic target) are forcing the installation of intercept software
here in the UK it was going to happen but after 9/11 it seeems inevitable.
I reckon a few major ISP's did it at the same time and the dimiution of capacity made everything go slow.
Not all went smoothly either, my e-mail was out for 4 days and Yahoo and joymail were inaccessable.
call me a conspiracy theorist but I noticed uncle Bill's hotmail was available!

Our broadband provider gave us notice plus converted us to their @ service (Shaw, Canada), BUT the GREAT benefit was losing all my spam mail.
I had registered with newspapers (LA Times, Miami Herald) to use their archives and I think most of the spam came from outfits that bought their lists. I register now only if absolutely necessary. Some companies, like Amazon, pester you with adds, and I now try to avoid them as well.

@Home has dumped over 800000 people and lost them their net access, current email, etc., according to the NY Times in this story. Bloody mess they've made of it, wot?

The outfit is in receivership. The mess is the natural result of that. No other company wants to pick up the pieces.

There is a very serious problem/bug (or intentional?) with the new "rogers.com" service in Canada (replacing the former @home service here). And I have been unable to speak with anyone at tech support either via phone or getting a response back from them in e-mail (It's been 5 days since I emailed them.)

Their new e-mail (SMTP) server consistently blocks ANY outgoing email to be sent if the sender's address ends in ANYTHING other than "@rogers.com". (The old mail server made no distinctions who the sender was. It merely provided the "juice" required to send e-mails.) Surely this will be a major problem for those who use email programs which support more than one (differentiating) email address.

In my case, I have a biz website and a domain name and email addresses with that domain name as the suffix. I frequently send biz emails to clients showing my biz email address as the sender, and rely on the SMTP server of my ISP to provide the "juice" (or the SMTP server) for ALL outgoing email. With this new SMTP changerover, I keep getting a Eudora "error 550" telling me that "sending email from is not allowed." Clearly this completely un-acceptable. It is either a bug, or an exclusivity thing wholly arrogant, and my hope is that it will cost the company dearly, in subsribers mass migrating away from Rogers.com.

This stupidity is analagous to my paying the hydro/power bills in my home, and my hydro company has now decided that their policy for all of their subscribers is that only I can turn on or off a light switch or activate any other power source in my home. If any of my family members, relatives or guests that visit me wish to use my hydro (or someone who's identity is not recognizable to them from the given home, they can't turn on or off a light, television, etc...in my home. Only me. Amazing eh?

The instant DSL or ADSL is available in my area, I'm gone from Rogers. Can't get get any response from them which is also typcial. They're also being class action sued big time for failing to deliver on their adverstising promises. They have the worst support I have ever seen and deserve to be shut down. I may very well join the class action suit.

Just a note, PMs here to me are probably better than sending to my hotmail as I've noticed, using this connection, that I can get and read emails there okay, but when I try to send I get the illegal motion error and it shuts my browser down.:-(

I read that it was over 850,000 and that Excite shut everything off when AT&T refused to up the ante, calling excite's bluff. Nice the way they play with people's livelihoods, isn't it?

Amergin, did this effect your job? I sure hope not, they need service people more than ever now to assuage the anger, etc. Just what you want to do, huh? sorry, darlin'

Hey y'all! I was shut off by AT&T too, but fortunately I had an internal modem that I forgot all about. Am now signed for 56K dial-up with Juno.com (geez, what a come down! - hahaha). My email is with yahoo.com, so I can still reach it. I just feel sorry for all those folks who used @home for their email service.

I agree with kat, isn't it wonderful how these big corpos love to play 'slap it on the table and let's see who's got the biggest' when the greatest effect is on all their customers (who support the CEO's penile envy counseling sessions) -- sorry, just had to 'blow off' a little steam there ;-)

JP, I think that is called relaying and it's not too uncommon for ISPs to dissallow it. I have been in that sort of situation in the past although I have no problems at the moment.

Sorry katdarlin...and aine...I am rather disgusted by that too...but ATT is coming out with their own broadband and rather soon...and are already providing support..

So far my job itself has not been affected...except that things are alot quieter as ATT/TCI was the biggest company affiliated with excite...

Things look better for me employment wise now than they did in the last few days...now it is looking that when our support gets scaled back more and more...I will be just transferred to a different department and do support for some one else...but just in case if push does come to shove I have been taking a look at the job market...and have been getting things ready to send off...

I'm confused though. I don't have @home but have friends here and in other states who do. Got mail from one in Colorado yesterday, and one here today. Have sent mail to both in the last couple of days... is it just AT&T customers? How would AT&T customers have @home? I thought they had att.net. Does AT&T really own everything and they're just not telling us?

Some days it really sucks being an unfrozen caveman. :-)

Yes, currently it is only ATT customers. @home used to rent out it's servers to ATT and several other companies, like Cox or Comcast. But ATT also had several other internet services...like worldnet...which I think is dial up....and they have MediaOne...which is a cable serviceor at least they did...many of those customers were converted before @home cut them off. Now ATT has ATT broadband (I think it is called)

I still have no idea what is going to happen to the other @home customers...whether they will eventually lose their service or not...I do not think anyone really knows right now...

Just a little thought while reading this thread, hope it helps.

Not always exactly sure how it works stateside, but here in Windsor, ont. Canada, (where Clinton and I live) I have talked with people who said that they would go AOL after problems with cable's @home service.
Its then that I mention a local company who has become relatively big in the Michigan/Ontario Corridor for internet service, (Mnsi.net) of which I have a DSL acct.

The biggest misconception I have heard from people is that there was a big difference in speed from DSL to Cable. Don't always believe what you read.

Most Cable companies have reported a higher speed over '256k DSL' which is true, except most DSL and connections dont run @256K anymore.

Pretty much what I am saying is, look around for your internet provider. You might find a decent local one that has local people who can help with support. Do your homework, you might find something way better than you had.

Cheers,
Steve

As far as Alt contacts go, might I once again suggest that folks take this opportunity to set up an email account at visto.com... actually www.myvisto.com

It beats the hell out of that hunk of junk that is Hotmail...

Won't help ya get online, but it will help ya keep in touch...

Thanks, Amergin, Steve and Clinton. Good advice.

What I read was, yes, AT&T does have its broadband division, it is what we pay to every month for highspeed internet access and email.

AT&T used Excite's @home server, or whatever, to put people like us on. They are now in a pissing contest, leaving a bunch of us out in the cold, while AT&T hurries to build up more of its own network. And, they are still, I think, trying to buy @home. I heard on NPR, today, that only 15% (I think) of the @home folks were still cut off, like us. Not sure, I may have heard wrong.

Clinton, I will check that out. Hotmail is really fecked up!

Thanks!

kat

Well, AT&T Broadband has me back 'up' again -- BUT (ain't there always a 'but') when I bring up the Mudcat, the format is all over the place and there's a bunch of gobbledygook symbols where the Quicklinks box should be, etc. Does anyone have any idea whether it's my PC or the connection, or what? And it's just the 'Cat that seems to be having the problem -- all the other sites I've been to are working just fine . . .

Best guesses are welcome, too.

Dear Amergin,

Well, Dear Hubby loaded up Netscape 6.2 last night and the 'Cat was still looking pretty wobbly. This morning, however, things seemed to have improved a bit -- no more splattered format and/or gobbledygook; however, the menu bar/graphic at the very top of the main forum page and thread pages still goes catywhumpus every now and then (in both Netscape and IE). And I did notice that, in Netscape, as well as getting the usual 'Connecting to...' and 'Transferring data from...' messages when I tried to connect with the Mudcat server(s), I saw a 'Resolving host...' message as well. Is that a clue?

I figure it has something to do with the routers dropping a few bits and bytes here and there while AT&T gets their broadband act together. I'm adopting a 'wait and see' attitude. ;-)

Yeah...that is most likely the cause of it...if you called they would tell you that it was something outside the network and they would not be able to help you...after they had you do a trace route...especially since it is only one site and both browsers...ah well...I hear things are still rather wobbly with their connection as yet...but these should all be ironed out, soon...

According to the NY Times...Excite@Home is folding completely on the 28th of February....Cox, Comcast, Insight and a couple of others will be hosting their own networks....other smaller companies will be left out in the cold...as they do not have the funds nor that many prospective customers to support their own networks....

As for my employment, things are looking better.

For those who are shopping for alternatives, I just picked up Earthlink broadband. I had Earthlink dialup before, and I wanted the faster speed without the hassle of changing our e-mail addresses. They provided the modem, filters, software, etc. They have a nice feature called the "Spaminator" that catches about 80% of the junk mail, but I eliminated most of that by quiting Bigfoot. So far the only problem was finding where the new software hid my Netscape address book.
