We're trying to think of a name for an Irish / Australian band. (2 fellas, 1 girl playing a mixture of Irish, Celtic and Aussie stuff.) I can't think of anything that hasn't already been used. It was about the Irish going to Australia and how they pined for the home, trying to fit into a strange land. The refrain was haunting; something to do with green threads among the gold. Maybe there's an idea in it. I have the great good fortune to be on my way to the beach - perhaps in the quiet it'll come to me! |

One recording is on the CD "Emigrant Eyes" by Geraldine and Danny Doyle on the Rego label, R-3018. This CD is one of my very favorites. I think they are small harmless beasts that scurry about in the night, although for all I know there are wombats that grow as big as grizzly bears. The only marsupials we get around here are possums, a public nuisance that have been making their wicked way up from the US and sneaking into the few warm spots we have in the country. The coolest critter in Australia has to be the flying fox.

They have wiry hair and long claws which they use to burrow. They are quite cute and seem to spend most of the time asleep because it's too hot to do anything else, (an Aussie will probably correct me and tell me that they're nocturnal.... I'm not sure.) The clever thing is though... they have pouches like a kangaroo, but the pouch faces towards their back legs, so that when they are digging the pouch doesn't get full of dirt!!! Clever eh??!!
