Subject: RE: Help What is Bumble? (Byker Hill) From: John MacKenzie Date: 04 Feb 23 - 04:58 AM Scumbling is a painting technique which I first heard used to describe the technique of achieving a wood grain effect on a narrow boat door. Pit shirt is a shirt worn to work in the pit, most likely an over shirt. As for bumble, I was once very drunk and latterly very sick through drinking Scrumpy with a shot of gin in it, which the locals in Polperro assured me was the right way to drink it. I think they call it teasing the Grockle in that part of the country. |

Subject: RE: Help What is Bumble? (Byker Hill) From: IanC Date: 17 Jan 07 - 06:57 AM Ptatchett's scumble sounds to me more like a portmanteau word (scum + tumble). A good way of telling is if the words work when combined the other way round. I.e. would tumblescum fit the bill? :-) |
Subject: RE: Help What is Bumble? (Byker Hill) From: Scrump Date: 17 Jan 07 - 06:36 AM Could Pratchett's Scumble, have any connection with Scrumpy, which is real and also made from apples Sounds like it could well be, although who can tell, apart from TP himself? |

Subject: RE: Help What is Bumble? (Byker Hill) From: Scrump Date: 16 Jan 07 - 05:19 AM LOL :-) Well, I'll stick to "bumbo" whatever Martin Carthy sings. Although I admire him, he's only human and I'm sure he's as capable of mishearing a lyric as anyone else. I'll ask him next time I see him. |

Subject: RE: Help What is Bumble? (Byker Hill) From: Schantieman Date: 15 Jan 07 - 12:42 PM Sir Martin Carthy (well, not yet, but it can only be a matter of time)'s version, with his well-known idiosyncratic tune, is certainly bumbLE. Steve |

Subject: RE: Help What is Bumble? (Byker Hill) From: Scrump Date: 15 Jan 07 - 09:37 AM Well, that version of Elsie Marley says "bumbo". I rest my case. |
Subject: RE: Help What is Bumble? (Byker Hill) From: IanC Date: 15 Jan 07 - 08:29 AM The same verse occurs in Elsie Marley. At least Conrad (here) copied it directly from Stokoe's "Songs of Northern England". :-) |

Subject: RE: Help What is Bumble? (Byker Hill) From: Scrump Date: 15 Jan 07 - 06:58 AM Maybe "Sir jOhn from Hull" could have another listen, carefully, and say whether the singer says "bumble" or "bumbo". Even then it wouldn't prove the singer had misheard it and propagated the error. Can anyone find a dictionary definition of "bumble" meaning a drink? B*gg*red if I can. |
Subject: RE: Help What is Bumble? (Byker Hill) From: Andy Jackson Date: 15 Jan 07 - 06:53 AM Scumble is a technique for finishing wood with an artificial grain effect. My house is full of it. It last for years. Bumble is the effect on the speech after consuminbg too much Gin or good beer either mixed or seperately. They don't last for years Bumbo is a baby seat!!!! they grow up I'm already wearing m'coat so I'll leave now. |
Subject: RE: Help What is Bumble? (Byker Hill) From: gnomad Date: 15 Jan 07 - 06:43 AM I have heard both bumbo and bumble sung. When you consider how widespread is the mispronunciation of words ending ...ble as if they were spelled ...boe, I think we have the same word here. |
Subject: RE: Help What is Bumble? (Byker Hill) From: Scrump Date: 15 Jan 07 - 05:27 AM Sir jOhn from Hull and others have lyrics that say "They drink bumble made from gin" "Sir jOhn from Hull" said: I am listening to Byker Hill, and they sing "They drink bumble made from gin" Does anybody know what bumble is? In other words, he wasn't referring to any printed lyrics, but was just listening to a recording. "Bumble" sounds to me like a mondegreen, i.e. he probably misheard the lyric - this is understandable if he had never heard of "bumbo". As I said, "bumbo" is a dictionary-defined term (look it up) for a drink made from gin (or rum). |

Subject: RE: Help What is Bumble? (Byker Hill) From: Noreen Date: 15 Jan 07 - 05:12 AM As the lyrics say, Scrump? Which lyrics would they be? Sir jOhn from Hull and others have lyrics that say "They drink bumble made from gin" There is no one set of 'correct' lyrics for a traditional song. |
Subject: RE: Help What is Bumble? (Byker Hill) From: Scrump Date: 15 Jan 07 - 04:55 AM There probably should have been a comma after "nutmeg" in my post above. As the lyrics say "bumbo made from gin" I thought that would have clinched it. |

Subject: RE: Help What is Bumble? (Byker Hill) From: Scrump Date: 14 Jan 07 - 02:02 PM What's all this "bumble" nonsense? Sounds like a mondegreen to me. I always thought it was "bumbo" not "bumble" but then I'm not a Geordie, y'knaa. "Bumbo" is defined in my dictionary as "a mixture of rum or gin, water, sugar, and nutmeg or similar drink". |
Subject: RE: Help What is Bumble? (Byker Hill) From: Les in Chorlton Date: 14 Jan 07 - 01:07 PM So, Bumble is aDog's Nose! I have had a couple of them. I was surprised to find them rather tasty. A bit like a very beig G & T. Clearly a dry hoppy beer would do the job best. Great song aswell. |
