Thanks Musicman for all the info, I was wanting to be able to record straight in with the mike, without all the other apparatus. So I guess the Minidisc is the way to go. Thanks to all for the info, JohnB

That's great. However, that does the rest of us no good, when we have no access to the mix board. MiniDisc is the best way to go then.

I can just sit there in my seat and record it for myself. For Gaelic Song Workshops, it works even better since I can bring it out in front of everyone.

George.. easy....

tape out from the mixer board to the line input on the nomad..... then you get everything that comes through the board.

toying with other possibilities.. (don't get bass and drums using lineout...)

my board (makie CFX20) has 4 sub groups.... live sound through sub1&2, then use sub 3&4 as a l/r to the nomad and not through the main mix.... mic drums and bass but only send it to sub 3/4.keep the sub levels below Unity so we don't overdrive the signal to the nomad. The nomad allows you to monitor the recording through the earphone jack so it may be possible to check levels through that..... crude, but possible.

anyway.. hope to test this theory next weekend...

The 20 gig Nomad hs been vailable for months now... The web site says it can store up to 4000+ songs! LOL!!

I can't think of 4000 songs I can even tolerate!

I would love to lay my hands on the 6 gigger though, for use exactly as you mentioned Mman! For recording my live shows, and I'd also like to have a little more control over the music that get's played while I'm on break... with the Nomad, I can make my own "Break Sets"...

By the time I can afford to get one though, the 20 gigers will probably be as cheep as the 6 gig ones are now...

Hi john..

as i mentioned earlier.. I have the Nomad.. and love it. It suits my purpose exactly.... which was to be able to record live performances.

It has, with the 6gb hard drive, the capacity to record 8+ hours of music in wav format. There is a line input which will accept any line level input. About a mic? i think you would need some sort of powered mic to go directly into the nomad... or.. you could put your mic through any small mixer board.. and use the 'tapeout' from the board to the jukebox.

once the file is saved in wav it has the ability to transfer to the computer via USB port where you can use any wav editor (i use cool edit) to trim etc.. it will also transfer the file to mp3 within the unit as well, but better saved as wav then edited outside then converted to mp3

the thing i like about it is that you can have 2-3 gb of mp3's on the jukebox for playback and still have room for recording 4-5 hours of music!! There are also built in effects and other special features within the jukebox.

also.. for recording cass/record to mp3.. you can play your source continuous into the jukebox (record players need to use a small preamp) then transfer to the computer to edit and separate the tracks before saving to mp3 and burning to cd...

but.. like mentioned earlier.. you need to define what it is you are wanting to do.. now and in the future...... then find the right tool. I initially started looking at minidisk recorders... but found this was more to my purpose and went that route.

btw.. they are coming up (i think now available) with a jukebox with a 20gb hard drive......

I really like my Sony MZ R-900. You don't have to tell it to go to the end of your recordings to avoid over-recording previous material. It is the first Sony model to do that automatically. About $300 at minidisco.com. Also, it allows up to 5 hours recording on one minidisc.

Neither directly allow you to transfer your tapes and LPs onto a CD.

There are people who supply a turntable which has a pre-amp builtin to it, so it directly goes into the line in on either the Nomad or MZ-R700. This would be an intermediate stage. You would still have transfer via a soundcard for the MiniDisc onto the computer before burning on a CD. I don't think the Nomad enters sound files onto the computer via the USB port. Will have to check the specs a bit closer.

From the looks of the specifications on the Nomad Jukebox, it does not have provision for a microphone. You would need another product to record onto and then upload to the computer before sending to the Nomad.

I would recommend that you seriously look at the Sony R700 model. It has microphone input, line input, optical to the computer's USB port. Uses a SINGLE AA battery (about 4 hours recording time, at least 6 hours playback time), up to 280 or 320 minutes of recording time on a Minidisc.

That's the thread which stated me thinking about the comparison, Giok. I was going to go out this afternoon and buy a minidisk, after months of procrastination and them still not going down in price more than 20$. After reading the other thread I am not going this afternoon, I need more info for an informed choice. Thanks anyhow, JohnB

Look at the thread about transferring tape and vinyl to CD, with particular reference to Musicman's remarks on the Nomad. It certainly made me decide to buy one when I have the cash.

Anyone have any thoughts on the comparison of a Sony Sr70? Minidisc to a Creative Nomad Jukebox, they are both about the same price. I want to be able to record live with a microphone. What is the capacity timewise of either for this? I guess you can just put another minidisc in for more space, I assume you would need to download the Nomad onto a hard drive or such. When I get around to it I also want to transfer LP's, Cassette's to CD. Thanks, JohnB
