Have appreciated the help and advice from many quarters of the US, and elsewhere. during a very difficult year personally, but, even worse for others. In my first year "Of the Cat" (just to keep it musical, albeit tangentially!) I'd like to renew my membership, if that's OK with "The inner circle!!" I still don't have a clue what Spaw, (and others) are banging on about, but, one day I'll work it out. See you all in 2002. I'm off to relax and work, (in equal portions) over the next week, and if anyone can get to the Dingwalls gig in Camden Town London on New Years day with the Bhundu boys etc, I'll be the one throwing drumkits about, and swearing loudly. Of course I love the Song Challenges, though now they seem to be a bit of a guilty pleasure and are taking some energy from my writing originals. My Favorite Topic for a Song Challenge was the Palm Civet/Toddy Cat, The idea of sell Weasel Shit to yuppies still cracks me up. My Favorite Curmugeon,.... DougR. Though honourable mention goes to Big Mick for calling me a Horse's Patoot. An insult to horses everywhere. I haven't benn around for the whole year, but neverthe less its been a fun one. It's one of those borderline areas. If a known member has posted something like that, I would have left it alone. This post came from somebody who didn't have the courage to identify himself or herself, and I think that's despicable. I did quite a bit of serious thinking about Walt and issues for about two weeks before I actually did, but once started, it seemed to take on a life of its own. And the power of the writing certainly became facinating. I think that several of the posters writing skills semed to increase to a higher level ... I especially enjoyed that. But, there was another thread that I remember very fondly. I think it was the "Henry Martin" thread, wherein a youngster named Mark (I hope I'm accurate here) seemed to lock into MUDCAT and several posters for the first time. If you'll recall, he was the young lad (OHIO?) who took on a school competition project around the ballad of Henry Martin. It was VERY refreshing to read his straight, enthusiastic responses. Would that we all could be there again. So, that's where my fond memories of MUDCAT and 2001 remain. CHEERS and thanx to all. Humourous threads were plentiful, but the Eminem thread was a blast because I had time to be there as it unfolded and I felt I became a 'Cat on that one. The Celtic Trad music threads were a great education for me and I couldn't pick just one. Welcoming Spaw back from serious surgery was a kinda high point in the good news category because he's a no bullshit kinda guy. Serious threads I tried to stay away from because the Cafe is where I unwind... I read the 9/11 threads but couldn't post because I was filled with anger and sorrow. The help type threads were informative and I even got to help with some, although my opinion of my advice is suspect to be biased. I won't go on... I'm beginning to bore even myself. Pick one ? Nope. Just glad I found a place with so many knowledgible, helpful, friendly folk. Hope I can contribute in the future. BTW, LEJ, good thread... again. |

In my case, it was the love of the tune that persuaded me to read the tune (we are all so different) but was very glad I did follow it (maybe another lesson there - to me that is - in taking an interest in "repeats"...). I'm pleased you found it fascinating. Paul, I doubt that many really hate guests - I think it is more a matter of hating the abuse of guest privileges to enable nastiness and that matters get confused. Jon |

As far as favorite threads go, I am still not over the immediate (and so helpful!) responses to the thread asking for assistance transcribing music for my Carnegie gig. I will never forget how quickly everyone jumped right in with enthusiasm and support. It meant so much to me then as it still does. You all became sisters and brothers in spirit to me...proving that cyber friendships and efforts can reach so far beyond the keyboard and monitor! You all were an important part of my REAL LIFE experience. How I treasure that! So, my favorite thread is a mixture of the "Help Transcribe" and the "Ivan The Hero" thread! By the way...Ivan and his wife will be in my part of the country these next few weeks and we're hoping to meet in person to talk about working on that music! Thanks you all.. |

Date: 21 Dec 01 - 04:11 PM Pure self-indulgence: the Tibetan thread that started out as an Orient Express thread was extraordinary, though completely different from the Drinking Gourd. I personally learned more from the many people on the Modes thread than I ever dreamed possible. But overall, I think that the most memorable thread was the mystic invisible thread that links Mudcatters together -- as Max says elsewhere, this was an incredible year for Mudcatters meeting in larger and larger numbers, Germany, England, Canada, U.S. The threads that gave me the most pleasure were the ones running up to people meeting, then the explosion when they met, and then the reminiscences, photos, etc. So much fun to read (even if I hardly participated in any), and participate vicariously. It is among the best of the fiction threads on the Mudcat. And an encore round of applause to the sparkling stars: Jen Ellen, Kat Laughing, and that brilliant underhanded sneak Peter T who stole the gal in the end!!! (LOL, Peter -- relax, I got over it!!!). In my opinion it is right up there with the amazing Steamboat Albert Hansell and the mindboggling Highway 101 Soda Shoppe fiction thread for creativity. But that's just me, and I sure agree it is a hard call! The Song Challenges have been better than ever this year, and the candidates named above were all stellar. A. |

After nearly 30 years of assuming they were all the same and only an oddity made them great - well they were superb threads. The asides associated with them, flying with guitars, packing them, string types, pick enhancers (bless the dipit), and sundry redundant discussions of all of the above made for a much enlightened musician here. The 9/11s were of valuable assistance in the crisis and the processing of same. Also valued were the threads on loss and success in each person's personal arena of life. It is always with a sense of awe I watch as mere mortals transcend incredible tragedy to heights of dizzying success. And even more their willingness to share these private things with their friends. I think the 9-11 threads ran pretty well and the communication was a help to a lot of us from the very beginning. Rick's threads have been wonderful and I've enjoyed participating as many others have too. The "Drinking Gourd" was a classic piece of work and one I enjoyed reading, wholly giving it to all of you who were so brilliant. I think a couple of the threads about "The Way It Was" which were authored in the main by Bob Nelson (Deckman) and Don Firth were absolute wonders and the very best of what can be learned and preserved here at the 'Cat. As they talked of one old folkie, it would lead to another and the surrounding tales.......So great that a number of us kept saying, "More, More!!" and it was the first threads I would check as they ran. One other that was unique and fun was a thread regarding a Jean Ritchie song. Jean said she had learned it from her sister but felt that her sister put a tune to someone's words and she never knew where the words had come from. What made this odd was that we had the only artist to ever record the song and to be closely associated with it as completely in the dark as the rest of us......so much for going to the source! Jean probed her every remembrance and we were going to libraries and doing deep web searches.....and we found it! Mudcat at it's scholarly best. Spaw |

Catspaw's 9-11 threads helped a lot of us sort out our feelings in the aftermath of the attack. Rick Fielding gave us some terrific guitar suggestions on various threads. The most memorable for me, though, was the "Follow the Drinking Gourd" story thread. How about you? |
