Subject: RE: A thread about... MUSIC! From: CarolC Date: 23 Dec 01 - 03:21 AM Let me add some to the list of good ones in your area, Wincing Devil...
Al Petteway and Amy White (two of my favorites)
Paul Oorts (My personal hero. He inspired me to learn to play the accordion and he's an all around swell guy)
Wendy Morrison (accordion player extraordinaire) And tons of others. There are just too many great ones to try to list. |

Subject: RE: A thread about... MUSIC! From: Celtic Soul Date: 23 Dec 01 - 10:21 AM As many of my own local favorites have been already listed, I can only add that Grace Griffith and Connemara are more than worthy of the above lists as well. Grace is easily my most favorite female singer, not merely in the folk genre. Her voice is (in my not so humble opinion) the best female folk voice ever. Bar none. (In the ear of this behearer, anyway). Both with the fullness of the sound that is the band "Connemara", or on her own, Grace is worth the listen, and the $$ for the CD's. http://www.loworbit.com/grace/ And while they have definately branched out from their roots, "Caprizzio, Women of Whimsey" are some of the best vocal blends in this area. Their strong yet mellow voices, and subtle emotive harmonies are not to be outdone. Many try, most fail. They are some of the only people I know (of either gender) who's voices, while at one moment delicate and beautiful and the next rich and sultry, can carry without miking in some fairly acoustically unfriendly environments. I highly recomend their CD, which anyone anywhere can get through their website. http://teachout.net/WoW/ And no, this is not a paid advertisment! ;D Thanks, Vince, for starting this thread!! :D |

Subject: RE: A thread about... MUSIC! From: Alice Date: 24 Dec 01 - 10:49 AM Some great choices listed - Leon Redbone and Kiri Te Kanawa... that's my kind of list!
I recently found an Australian group by getting their free sampler CD, "Cotter's Bequest". My son and I have listened to this over and over, and he learned "Cloghans" on the mandolin, which I have not tired of. As a new group I'm listening to, I can recommend them at: Gavin O'Loghlen & Cotters Bequest. Alice |

Subject: RE: A thread about... MUSIC! From: Coyote Breath Date: 25 Dec 01 - 01:47 PM Wow (I seem to use that a lot)! a music thread! Hmmm. The New Lost City Ramblers, all configurations. The Geyer Street Sheiks (local St. Louis string band trad and new grass and strangeness) The Augusta Bottoms Consort (a local Montgomery county string band, their own stuff [Time to Kill the Rooster, one of their best]) The Holy Modal Rounders, especially Going Nowhere Fast. Thick and Thin (Especially the banjo player Mike Yount of this local, Potosi, Missouri very old timey string band). Split Rail, Union Station, any thing sung and or played by Allison Krause (oh lord do I love her voice!) and all other music (except maybe hip hop and rap but then I am 63 and have a hard time relating to that "set") CB |
