I agree with GUEST,Shaw Mhor (SCOTTISH)
with some minor lyric mods (and verse sequence)

It's certainly not an Irish song, Angus Og (young Angus) brought his Donalds from Islay to fight alongside The Bruce at Bannockburn.

The song however relates to the Daily Record cartoon character by Ewan Bain who I believe was from Skye, was sung by Alistair Gillies and goes along the lines of:

Obviously Scottish not Irish. Angus Og well known in Scotland, and all terminoly in these lyrics relates to Scotland not Ireland.

There are more verse's to this wonderful song. I am afraid that I cannot remember the rest except a portion of I believe the second verse which is :- Now in the Outer Hebrides, the port of ------
and there the song disappears from my mind. I am sorry about that but at least I hope the other bit helps a little.

I am sure that Andy Stewart made a recording of this song in the 1970's. I do not know the name of the album but it was very good.

Going back to MacTatties ref. to Angus Og in the Scottish Daily Record, I think there was actually a song written about our beloved hero from Drambeg in the Utter Hebrides. It was possible sung by the gaelic singing dentist - Alistair Gillies. The cartoon strip was written by a Glasgow Highlander called Euan MacBain who is sadly no longer with us. Re. Donal Og; There's a superb version of that great song by Dublin man Al O'Donal.

If you search for "Aengus Og" on Google you will get 367 hits. Happy hunting.

I have fond memories of the Daily Record strip cartoon. The mens room in the Hebrides bar in Edinburgh used to be decorated with Angus Og strip cartoons. (Maybe still is) Much more entertaining than the usual literary offerings in such establishments.

Aengus Og was one of the Tuatha de Danaan, and was always accompanied by a cloud of singing birds around his head, which must have made it hard to hear his mobile phone.

As far as I remember, he's kind of cognate with Apollo in the Greek myths. God of knowledge and inspiration.

Good guess there, Guest JTT. I hadn't thought of that one. I don't know if anyone has put a tune to it, though I wouldn't be surprised if they had. But like I said, I'm not aware of any traditional songs which go by the title Angus Og. Donal Og or the Yeats poem are the best guesses so far. Also, one spelling of Angus as Gaeilge is Oengus. Dunno if that is any help either.

I'm not aware of a traditional Irish song by this name. Perhaps, if such a song exists, you could tell us where you saw a reference to it? Then we might be able to help you more.

Also, the spelling you are using of Angus Og is the one more often associated with the Scottish version of the tales, especially the well-known comic strip of that name.
