Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Angus Og (Traditional Irish Song) From: GUEST,Slamannan Man Date: 11 Apr 11 - 06:48 PM I agree with GUEST,Shaw Mhor (SCOTTISH) with some minor lyric mods (and verse sequence) Many battle's there have been Many hero's we have seen Who have risen up in answer to the call Bruce and Wallace and the rest Put the English to the test But I'll tell you of the greatest hero Of them all He's a wily highland man Making money while he can And his antics are the talk of all the folk Through his wee bit but'n'ben Come the English gentlemen And they don't get out again Until their stoney broke Angus Og, Angus Og He's a devil he's a rascal he's a rogue From John o'Groats to Skye Edinburgh to Milngavie There is no-one who is half as fly as Angus Og Angus borrowed Lachie's car And he covered it in tar And he put a wee propeller on it's tail He put some whisky in the tank and the rest of it he drank The he took it to Old Willie's for its maiden sail Well you've never saw such power it did ninety miles an hour But it sank before it got halfway across Ach said Angus what a boat, perhaps it didnae float But it's the fastest little submarine you ever saw! Angus Og, Angus Og He's a devil he's a rascal he's a rogue From John o'Groats to Skye Edinburgh to Milngavie There is no-one who is half as fly as Angus Og There is no-one who is half as fly as Angus Og Angus Og, Angus Og He's a devil he's a rascal he's a rogue From John o'Groats to Skye Edinburgh to Milngavie There is no-one who is half as fly as Angus Og In the Outer Hebrides The board gave Angus subsidies So he built a rocket pointing to the sky Marilene and Lachie Mhor filled it with bottles by the score Since Angus first discovered that the moon was dry Ach said angus very soon I'll have a pub up in the moon and I'm going to make a fortune so I am for when the human race starts to travel into space I'll have the only place where they can have a Dram Angus Og, Angus Og He's a devil he's a rascal he's a rogue From John o'Groats to Skye Edinburgh to Milngavie There is no-one who is half as fly as Angus Og At least this is how I remember hearing it on a friday night with my friend Jimmy singing it... there was beer involved though. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Angus Og (Traditional Irish Song) From: GUEST,Shaw Mhor Date: 19 Sep 10 - 12:22 AM It's certainly not an Irish song, Angus Og (young Angus) brought his Donalds from Islay to fight alongside The Bruce at Bannockburn. The song however relates to the Daily Record cartoon character by Ewan Bain who I believe was from Skye, was sung by Alistair Gillies and goes along the lines of: Many battle's there have been Many hero's we have seen Who have risen up in answer to the call Bruce and Wallace and the rest Put the English to the test But I'll tell you of the greatest hero Of them all He's a wily highland man Making money while he can And his antics are the talk of all the folk Through his wee bit but'n'ben Come the English gentlemen And they don't get out again Until their stoney broke Angus Og, Angus Og He's a devil he's a rascal he's a rogue From John o'Groats to Skye Edinburgh to Milngavie There is no-one who is half as fly as Angus Og Now in the Outer Hebrides The board gave Angus subsidies So he built a rocket pointing to the sky Marileen and Lachie Mhor uploaded bottles by the score Since Angus first discovered that the moon was dry Ach said angus very soon I'll have a pub up in the moon and I'm going to make a fortune so I am for when the human race starts to travel into space I'll have the only place where they can have a Dram Angus Og, Angus Og He's a devil he's a rascal he's a rogue From John o'Groats to Skye Edinburgh to Milngavie There is no-one who is half as fly as Angus Og Well he borrowed Lachie's car And he covered it in tar Then he stuck a jet propeller on it's tail He put some whisky in the tank and the rest of it he drank The he took it to Loch Oovie for its maiden sail Well you've never saw such power it did ninety miles an hour But it sank before it got halfway across Ach said Angus what a boat, perhaps it didnae float But it's the fastest little submarine there ever was! Angus Og, Angus Og He's a devil he's a rascal he's a rogue From John o'Groats to Skye Edinburgh to Milngavie There is no-one who is half as fly as Angus Og There is no-one who is half as fly as Angus Og Angus Og, Angus Og He's a devil he's a rascal he's a rogue From John o'Groats to Skye Edinburgh to Milngavie There is no-one who is half as fly as Angus Og |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Angus Og (Traditional Irish Song) From: Jim Dixon Date: 06 May 10 - 08:05 AM I wonder if the Angus Og in the song is this one (a cartoon character invented by Ewen Bain). |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Angus Og (Traditional Irish Song) From: GUEST,sarah Date: 04 May 10 - 10:12 AM Obviously Scottish not Irish. Angus Og well known in Scotland, and all terminoly in these lyrics relates to Scotland not Ireland. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Angus Og (Traditional Irish Song) From: GUEST,Edthefolkie Date: 27 May 09 - 11:22 PM Don't know aboot the song but I thought Angus Og was the Lord of the Isles? Not to mention a bootle conditioned ale from Islay made from the bits left over when they make the whisky! Good stuff actually. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Angus Og (Traditional Irish Song) From: GUEST,B MacDonald Date: 27 May 09 - 08:59 PM I have the album with the song Angus Og. It is Alisdair Gillies. I do not think Andy Stewart sings it but I may be wrong. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Angus Og (Traditional Irish Song) From: GUEST,BMacDonald Date: 27 May 09 - 08:55 PM Now in the outer hebrides the board gave angus subsidies to build a rocket pointing to the stars Willimeena Roquemore uploaded bottles by the score since angus first discovered that the moon was dry Ach said angus very soon I'll have a pub up in the moon and I'm going to make a fortune so I am for when the human race starts to travel into space I'll have the only place where they can have a Dram Angus Og.. Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Angus Og (Traditional Irish Song) From: GUEST,Audrey Date: 24 Jan 09 - 04:48 PM Many battle's there have been Many hero's we have seen Who have risen up in answer to the call Bruce and Wallace and the rest Put the English to the test But I'll tell you of the greatest hero Of them all He's a willie highland man Making money while he can And his antics are the talk o' all the folk Through his wee bit but'n'ben Come the English gentlemen And they don't get out again Until their stoney broke Angus Og, Angus Og He's a devil he's a rascal he's a rogue From John o'Groats to Skye Edinburgh to Milngavie There is no-one who is half as flie As Angus Og ----------------------------------------------- There are more verse's to this wonderful song. I am afraid that I cannot remember the rest except a portion of I believe the second verse which is :- Now in the Outer Hebrides, the port of ------ and there the song disappears from my mind. I am sorry about that but at least I hope the other bit helps a little. I am sure that Andy Stewart made a recording of this song in the 1970's. I do not know the name of the album but it was very good. Hope you find it. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Angus Og (Traditional Irish Song) From: GUEST,Andy Mitchell Date: 04 Jan 02 - 03:53 PM Going back to MacTatties ref. to Angus Og in the Scottish Daily Record, I think there was actually a song written about our beloved hero from Drambeg in the Utter Hebrides. It was possible sung by the gaelic singing dentist - Alistair Gillies. The cartoon strip was written by a Glasgow Highlander called Euan MacBain who is sadly no longer with us. Re. Donal Og; There's a superb version of that great song by Dublin man Al O'Donal. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Angus Og (Traditional Irish Song) From: Wolfgang Date: 04 Jan 02 - 09:06 AM As we are still completely free to speculate, may I add The dream of Aengus Og Wolfgang |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Angus Og (Traditional Irish Song) From: Murray MacLeod Date: 04 Jan 02 - 08:46 AM If you search for "Aengus Og" on Google you will get 367 hits. Happy hunting. I have fond memories of the Daily Record strip cartoon. The mens room in the Hebrides bar in Edinburgh used to be decorated with Angus Og strip cartoons. (Maybe still is) Much more entertaining than the usual literary offerings in such establishments. Murray |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Angus Og (Traditional Irish Song) From: GUEST,JTT Date: 04 Jan 02 - 07:38 AM Aengus Og was one of the Tuatha de Danaan, and was always accompanied by a cloud of singing birds around his head, which must have made it hard to hear his mobile phone. As far as I remember, he's kind of cognate with Apollo in the Greek myths. God of knowledge and inspiration. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Angus Og (Traditional Irish Song) From: Mac Tattie Date: 03 Jan 02 - 03:17 PM Angus Og was a character in a strip cartoon in the Glasgow based Daly Record. cheers. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Angus Og (Traditional Irish Song) From: GUEST Date: 03 Jan 02 - 09:00 AM Good guess there, Guest JTT. I hadn't thought of that one. I don't know if anyone has put a tune to it, though I wouldn't be surprised if they had. But like I said, I'm not aware of any traditional songs which go by the title Angus Og. Donal Og or the Yeats poem are the best guesses so far. Also, one spelling of Angus as Gaeilge is Oengus. Dunno if that is any help either. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Angus Og (Traditional Irish Song) From: GUEST,JTT Date: 03 Jan 02 - 08:29 AM Dunno if you mean Donal Og, which should be in the database - but it strikes me you might be looking for the Yeats poem The Song of Wandering Aengus: http://www.poemtree.com/SongOfWanderingAengus.htm |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Angus Og (Traditional Irish Song) From: Kenny B (inactive) Date: 02 Jan 02 - 03:46 PM If your "Mondegreens" are as good as mine perhaps you mean Eileen Orr, the PRIDE OF PETROVAR
If this is the right one I read minds. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Angus Og (Traditional Irish Song) From: Noreen Date: 02 Jan 02 - 03:28 PM e-mail sent, asking for more information. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Angus Og (Traditional Irish Song) From: GUEST Date: 02 Jan 02 - 12:03 PM I'm not aware of a traditional Irish song by this name. Perhaps, if such a song exists, you could tell us where you saw a reference to it? Then we might be able to help you more. Also, the spelling you are using of Angus Og is the one more often associated with the Scottish version of the tales, especially the well-known comic strip of that name. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Angus Og (Traditional Irish Song) From: Sorcha Date: 02 Jan 02 - 11:34 AM No luck. I tried Angus, Aengus, Aoghnus, etc. All I found was Donal Og......... |
Subject: Angus Og (Traditional Irish Song) From: GUEST,Davy Rogers Date: 02 Jan 02 - 11:18 AM Can anyone send me the lyrics to "Angus Og" a Traditional Iriah Folksong? please send to webmaster@davyrogers.com http://www.davyrogers.com Thanks
