Hi All, There is already a mudcat account in the UK. This is the account we use for the sale of tee shirts and patches.
How it works is;
1, I sell a shirt and put the money into the account.
2, I tell Dick Greenhause how much is in the account.
3, Dick then sends his own money to Max to the same US value.
4, Dick then uses the account for the purchase of CD's in the UK for Camsco.
This obviously saves on any commission charged by banks both ways.
Dick has asked me to let you all know about this arrangment and is ready and willing to pay any monies to Max which are donated to the tee shirt account.
Cheers Bill

ROLL UP, ROLL UP!!!!! MUDCAT SALE OF THE CENTURY!!!!!!!!
If anyone wants to buy the tee shirts or patches I have some left, Shirts are all sizes at £12 each, Patches (Fish & Banjo logo embroidered coloured sew on badges) are £3-50. I am also doing the new 2002 Calendar along with the 2001 calendar plus the digitrad on disc. I think such a bargain as this should be worth a tenner (£10) at least, but if you can't afford that much just send me the £ sterling equivilent of $10 US which is for the 2002 calendar, the other bits are thrown in free. You can P.M. me for further details. These prices include post and packaging and all the money goes to mudcat

Subject: Mudcat - buy a week or a month?
From: Joe Offer
Date: 08 Jan 02 - 04:25 AM

I suppose it would be an idea for people to know how much it costs to run Mudcat. As close as we can figure it, it's about $85 US per week. Not cheap, but not a bad price at all. Anybody care to send a check for a week or a month?
My check's in the mail, Max.

Now there is an idea, Joe. Perhaps you folks could do a bit of programming wizardry and put a banner across the top of the page. Something like, "The Mudcat Cafe, brought to you by _________________." And then sell the banners to us. Each week just change the name. January of each year, we resell the banners?

Sheesh, Joe and Mick! It's good to know how much it costs, but we've been working hard on getting the concept down that everybody's steady little bit adds up with everyone else's little bits and many have felt good because they are able to help in that way; the widow's mite thing.

If we do banner ads, imo, it would lend a proprietary air to whomever was well-off enough to afford a month or week's donation. I understand the concept, but I think it would be too non-inclusive of all and make some who can afford only a small amount each month feel second class. Just my 2 cents.

Wait, a breakdown of costs is OK-- just break it down further and then "market" it so that it remains inclusive. In Red Cross we used to explain and publicize funding needs that way all the time.

OK, let's see.

Fix my numbers, but here's a stab at it-- just a draft--

$270 keeps xxxxx DT songs available to the public, at an average of xxxx hits per month.

$85 provides public access to xxxx hours of freshly-archived radio broadcasts available for an average xxxx hits per week.

$12 ensures that one day's 24-hour thread list is available for song research and discussion, for an average xxxx hits per day.

50 cents covers an hour's posting time.

The marketing "trick" is not to use these to illustrate user's fees, but to show how we help keep this open for others.

Banners should be discussed with Pene, IMO-- see how he has birthdays automated now in Resources? At least I assume they are automated. If they are feasible, maybe as part of the randomized "news" copy that now includes auction items, consider doing them like we do memorial candles at church-- you get some people together or underwrite it yourself, to pay the cost of the sanctuary candle, in memory of a loved one who has died. You pick a week that's an anniversary of something special in that person's life. Or Christmas greenery or Easter flowers, everyone kicks in what they can and the names of memorialized go onto a list published in the week's service leaflet. Here, the banners could be ways of recognizing living and passed-on folkies, on a date that has some significance, so that it can be automated. If it takes more than one person to do the day's or week's banner or blurb, then the group name or individual names go on it, that's all. And it's not the ONLY way to support Mudcat-- just one of many.

And here is one more idea-- auction banners recognizing people. Only instead of the "winner" paying the whole fee, each bidder kicks in a buck (or more) twoards the group effort being waged in that person's honor. Susan in CA did a Mudcat donation challenge to educators, for instance, in a thread-- these could go into an auction format.

Even if the banner idea gets implemented, there should still be a possibility to donate without any other people than Max getting knowledge of the donation - not everybody likes the advertising, some might prefer anonymity.

Sorry for posting this anonymously, I usually don't like anonymous postings, but in this case it would not make any sense otherwise.

Yes... I think there is this thing that happens around here, where an idea about a thing to do becomes somehow perceived as "This is what to do." The sense of "we" creeps in where it was not intended and is not even feasible!

IMO, ALL funding ideas that people want to implement are the "thing to do" as long as it's OK by Max-- we each do what we can and want to do. No one needs to feel left out, dictated to, controlled, etc. Nothing is intended that way, I am sure of that.

I agree with Kat and anonymous - I wouldn't suggest that donors be identified. A twenty-dollar purchase in the auction makes Mudcat run for over a day, so that's significant. Still, for those who can afford more, it's a worthy cause. My figure of $85 a week is a bare-bones budget. If Max has more, he can do more.

I'm glad that all of these ideas have come about. I don't have the money to do much of a donation but had those books, had them for a long time (Kate's book was given to me by her cousin), and was willing to part with them to assist the Cat. So we each do what we can. I certainly can appreciate the level of donating that would put one's name on the banner - but wouldn't want mine up there.

I noticed that the UK contingent has come up with a grouping of sales items? T-shirt, patch, and Nearly Nude calendar for one price. Is someone here willing to provide that same offer?

I am not happy with posting ammounts pledged or donated. While it embarasses the mean, if they can be embarrased, it embarrases the poor who may be donating what they can afford.

Joe does the Ball Park figure of USS$ 85.00 a week include depreciation, maintainance, and a sinking fund for equipment replacement ?

The answer to that would be "Heck, NO!"

US $85/week barely covers the "basic expenses" listed in Max's intial plea - the line connection to the internet and electricity to run the servers.

My operating costs to keep a forum alive and do a few other bits and pieces are under £1 per day. Its frightening to see how costs can rise, not really for technical sophistication or reliability but more to provide bandwidth and storage space.

One reaction I have when looking at prices such as $368 (I think that is right) per month which is in the dedicated hosting league is to look at alternative hosting solutions. One shared Cold Fusion platform is here and costs $49.95 per month. OK I believe the Mudcat database is bigger than 1gb but in reality, there is a lot of junk in there. Maybe there are other reasons too but as someone who operates on next to nothing I can't help wondering whether this $318.05 difference per month isn't really an expensive luxury when money is so tight.

UK and Eire based Catters are recomended to PM Bill/Sables for details as to how donations can be made with the minimum of difficulty and cost.

Bill has a very nice method at work and as one who used to lecture in the history of banking and insurance I can confirm that the method Bill uses is historically based on the method of the Lomdards in the 14th Centuary.

Just a quick check of the auction and theoretically, IF all auctions were to end tonight, there is already $454 raised. Of course, this will go up as the items have different closing dates, but it's nice to see how generous donors and bidders are being, as well as all of those who are sending monetary donations. Way to go, Mudcatters!

I think PayPal is the only thing that is currently working for secure financial transactions. Max listed his addy up above for that and it worked fine for me. If you aren't a PayPal member and you list Max as the one who referred you Max gets an extra $5 from PayPal.

It also might be nice if Max could give us some idea of how much money he has received so far in response to his original appeal, a ballpark amount periodically updated, just so we are encouraged to keep this system working.

Big Mick made a request here on his "Happy Birthday" thread: Mick's birthday list! He wants people to send extra money to Mudcat as a birthday present. What a great idea! Here's another thought: send a contribution to Mudcat, as a birthday present, for each birthday thread one posts to! (That oughtta keep Joe Offer from being too annoyed about those threads!) Lessee, now, maybe a buck a thread times how many birthday threads per year...?

Refresh Folks - rember it's going to take a looooong haul to Keep the Cat and Max out of the mire.

Could some Cater with a better knowledge of the real costs, and USA prices, put ball park figures on what is needed to keep the Cat open.

That way we can all contemplate what we collectively need to raise per annum to keep the show open.

On the basic costs as supplied by various catters I contemplate an absalute minimum annual budget of US$ 4,500.00 or circa £3,200.00.

How much is that per head ??? And how much does that relate in Pints or Bottles of Beer or other beverage ???
