Subject: Question re: are all mudcat tunes public From: GUEST,JestInTime Date: 11 Jan 02 - 12:44 PM I'm new to Mudcat and would like to know if the tunes available here are all traditional, or public domain, or are some copyrighted? Thanks! |

Subject: RE: Question re: are all mudcat tunes public From: Devilmaster Date: 11 Jan 02 - 12:49 PM A little from Column A, A little from Column B.....

Subject: RE: Question re: are all mudcat tunes public From: GUEST Date: 11 Jan 02 - 01:02 PM Well, Devilmaster, that really answered JestinTime's question.... The answer is that there is a lot of copyrighted material on this site. Are there any particular tunes that you are curious about? If you post the names of them, we'll be able to let you know whether they are PD or not. |

Subject: RE: Question re: are all mudcat tunes public From: Devilmaster Date: 11 Jan 02 - 01:28 PM Well Guest, I guess you're not a 'Simpsons' fan.... The answer is that I took our new guest as an intelligent person, who would understand that when I say all of the above, is that everything he asked for, trad, PD and copywrited, is there. After your post, perhaps I should not overestimate the intelligence quotient of some of our 'guests'. Hope ya still have fun, mate. steve |

Subject: RE: Question re: are all mudcat tunes public From: MMario Date: 11 Jan 02 - 01:46 PM there is also a lot of traditional and public domain material on this site. Devilmaster answered JestinTime's question - he just didn't make the offer of identifying which are which. |

Subject: RE: Question re: are all mudcat tunes public From: GUEST Date: 11 Jan 02 - 01:56 PM Devilmaster Perhaps you shouldn't make your judgement of 'intelligent' on the basis of US culture... Don't start me, american dimwit |

Subject: RE: Question re: are all mudcat tunes public From: GUEST,in the Mudcat Observatory Tower Date: 11 Jan 02 - 02:08 PM JestInTime, There are numerous examples of songs in Mudcat's Digital Tradition that are credited to the wrong songwriters. Perhaps the most famous example is "Hot Buttered Rum," incorrectly credited to Bryan Bowers rather than Tommy Thompson of the Red Clay Ramblers who is now hospitalized in the final stages of Alzheimer's Disease. Bowers himself has made several requests over the years to have the mistake corrected but has been ignored. |

Subject: RE: Question re: are all mudcat tunes public From: Dicho (Frank Staplin) Date: 11 Jan 02 - 02:15 PM Guest, what is copyright and what is not is not always easy to answer from the data in the DT and the Forum. Or from a search elsewhere for the song, for that matter. Incomplete data are often cited on the internet. Is the copyright applicable to the words and/or melody, or just to the particular performance to prevent unauthorized copying, playing, piracy, etc. Is the © renewable? Join Mudcat, go through the threads, and you will read about some of the problems. Sorry, Devilmaster, your post was succinct and correct, but © keeps coming up in threads and the answers are not always as simple as some people think they are. |

Subject: RE: Question re: are all mudcat tunes public From: Jon Freeman Date: 11 Jan 02 - 02:21 PM I would guess that copyrighted material is the smallest of the categories. Guest Observer: I don't know about the case you mention or any other specific questions but one problem is with the system rather than items not getting corrected. Dick Greenhaus' master copy gets updated but it can take time before changes reach Mudcat. I've a feeling the Mudcat version is a 1999 version. I guess it is difficult as the DT isn't part of Mudcat but as Mudcat is the main host, it's a shame that Dick and Max could not get together and come up with some on-line updatable version from which copies could periodically taken, converted to AskSam or whatever and released. Subject: RE: Question re: are all mudcat tunes public From: Jim Dixon Date: 11 Jan 02 - 02:58 PM Guest in the tower: Before criticizing anything in Mudcat (other than the silly things people sometimes post) we would do well to consider that our host's financial problems are so severe that we're lucky that Mudcat exists at all. I expect any day to see that the plug has been pulled for good. Where will we be then? In the meantime, it does not behoove us to complain that every error in the database is not corrected when we would like. If you would like to work as an unpaid assistant to Max, and you have the qualifications to do so, I recommend you submit your résumé. Otherwise, please shut up. |

Subject: RE: Question re: are all mudcat tunes public From: Dicho (Frank Staplin) Date: 11 Jan 02 - 03:49 PM See thread Here for the story on Hot Buttered Rum. Thompson is cited here, and his version marked for inclusion. Material takes a long time to get into the DT because of lack of time on the part of volunteers and their need for priorities. I think most of us would check the Forum as well as the DT. |

Subject: RE: Question re: are all mudcat tunes public From: Devilmaster Date: 11 Jan 02 - 05:23 PM Guest, perhaps you should check the personal profiles. I'm sure you will find my info, ,where I live and my photo. It says what bar in my hometown that I usually drink at. Come on down, introduce yourself, and have a beer on me. Sounds like someone needs a drink! Steve |

I was able to decipher the answer to my question from the generous responses you wrote. And yes, Devilmaster...I certainly DO need a drink about now! Vicki |

Subject: RE: Question re: are all mudcat tunes public From: GUEST,.gargoyle Date: 12 Jan 02 - 12:13 AM Justin...Good Question....that was discussed throughout the years.
ANYTHING...that becomes "published" (available) through the "Net" is "public domain."
The lawyers, copyrightist's, web-creator's, java-scriptors, may "HOWL" all they want...BUT>>>
Within four to six hours of it "appearing" on the "web" it has been archived in multiple locations. In some cases it is more like four to six seconds.
The Internet is the nightmare Kipling and Samuel Langhorn feared, at its absolute worst. And the ability to archieve, preserve, "steal" is compounded by the immediate moment.
The globe is quickly moving towards the egalitarian society dick and susan once invisioned, (though Max's proletareate vision's of wealth have momentarily, entranced, fogged and blinded them.)
Sincerely, Gargoyle |

Subject: RE: Question re: are all mudcat tunes public From: Dicho (Frank Staplin) Date: 12 Jan 02 - 01:42 AM Public domain if put on the net? If you are a professional performer, this argument won't work because action may be taken against you. It all depends on how important the authorized copyright users (recording companies, etc.) think the particular case is. Injunctions can be pretty cheap and court costs, if trial is needed, are usually paid by the loser. Of course all of us thieves out there in greater netland, if we keep our booty in our hot little hands or quietly pass it around just between friends, are usually not worth prosecuting because the case would be difficult to prove. |

Subject: RE: Question re: are all mudcat tunes public From: Devilmaster Date: 12 Jan 02 - 03:16 PM hey gypsy, not a prob.... we had a good time talking over Jesus Christ Superstar once... And to Jestintime, realize that I have no problem with you mate, and I'm happy I didn't confuse you like some other poor, tortured soul. Don't be discouraged, come back, hop the 'cat helps ya time and time again. Cheers, Steve |
