Isaac - "LOL 666"? is that like "lol" or "rotflmao". There's been so many great jokes here over the years, I can't remember which one was number 666. Can you refresh for us?

You chose a great tune for your parody, and your sense of humor peeks through throughout your post. Is it possible you're an orangeman without horns and a tail?

I have a dear friend who, in all honesty, proclaims himself an "Orangeman for a united Ireland." His origins are in an ultra conservative brand of orangeism, but he's grown way beyond it. I empathised with him when his son married a papist and converted.

First of all a word to the detractors and apologists …

In a post above one of youse claims that "until now you didn't know anyone could type with their buttocks".

Well I've got news for you! People with fundamentalist Protestant views can do just about anything with their buttocks. Typing's a doddle, it's wee buns. If you want a case in point, think only of our dear American Brother in Christ, the Reverend Brother Jerry Lee Lewis, a man that could likely play The Green Grassy Slopes Of The Boyne on the piano with his arse. (And could probably make a good stab at it farting down a mouth organ as well.)

So before proceeding any further, let's hear it for the nimble buttocks of Lutheranism, the spry arse-cheeks of Calvinism (and I'm not talking Klein) and the dextrous rumps of fundamentalism.

And another correction! Purple and Orange is in no way connected with Brother Conrad, whose views he describes as namby-pamby and liberal. Purple and Orange is none other than Brother Gordy McMordy, Grand Master of LOL 666, Hell's Mouth, and henceforth shall contribute to this debate in his own name.

To proceed! Brother McMordy – a bare tit and a furled trouser to you! I think you're a wee bit confused. I didn't write the fine song you've published. I was responsible for "The Boul' Orange Campsite at Drumcree" which goes to the tune of the shinners' "Kelly The Boy From Killane". An aisy mistake, so rest aisy on your camp-bed.

I reproduce it below for the greater glory of our vengeful Lord.

THE BOUL' ORANGE CAMPSITE AT DRUMCREE
(Copyright Isaac McKittery)

What's the news, what's the news, my boul' Orangeman, with your bowler, your brolly and your sash?
Why in such haste through the streets do you race and why in such hurry do you dash?
Goodly news, goodly news do I bring unto you, goodly news do I carry to thee
For all of its might England quakes at the sight of the boul' Orange campsite of Drumcree

Though we're up to our oxters in cow-clap and glar, with no telly, no toilet nor no bath
We will still stand our ground like those men of renown who held out in Derry to the last
Oh the Fenians may wrap the green flag around as into the grave they are sent
But when I'm deceased, if oul' Ulster's not released, you may wrap Brother Isaac in a tent

And when I'm enrolled in the heavenly fold I won't need no mansion in the sky
Some cloth and some pegs in a canvas kit-beg is all that I'll need to get by
When Glory I gain, I will never complain if I'm quartered along with my kind
Cos I'd hate for to spend my days without end living like a pearl among swine

Alison.

The Portadown News is a scream, we need more of this type of attitude. Just yesterday I was listening to a taped talk by "Patch Adams", (the doctor whose story was made into a movie starring Robin Williams.). He dresses like a clown and treats his patients with humour instead of drugs. He was speaking to a gathering in Ottawa, Canada, Part of his speech was about "the value of humour" and was quick to point out that throughout the ages, " Scientific research has yet to prove that being serious is beneficial in any way ". Sure makes you think.

I thought he was serious until it got to the verse

On holidays some brethren go up North to Portrush Town
But I like to spend my fortnight in a field near Portadown
There are no flashing slot machines and no foaming billows roar
But we sit around the fire and sing "The Sash My Father Wore"

brilliant!!! lol..... maybe he can do another verse about going to Portrush to buy Paisley, McCrae and Robinson family group postcards (I kid you not!!) in Grahams, so you can send them around the world to people who don't believe such things exist!!...........

meanwhile in this weeks Portadown news

My guess is Guest purple and orange is Conrad Bladey, Internet Orange kook, who maintains an "Irish" website. He isn't Irish, and he lives in Baltimore, and is universally loathed by the DC/Baltimore Irish session folks, as I recall.

I'm crying so hard from laughing at the the song (especially the later verses), and some of the exchanges, that I can hardly see to type. I think that this thread cries out for the talents of our many skilled versifiers -maybe it should even be a "song challenge." Let the invisible O&B poster feel the sting of the thousand quills of the MCOL (Mudcat Corps of Lyricists). But on the upside, isn't it better to be ranting in cyberspace than in the real world?

Alison/Fubula Matlock

I have just looked at the Portadown News site and it is absolutely hilarious!!

The ability to take the most extreme views on either side and laugh at them both equally is a tremendous skill == and it works.

I don't feel as as bad about our "Orange and Purple" friend now.

Thanks to both of you.

I too am from West of Scotland Presbyterian stock and "Orange and Purple" you are a dinosaur with a broken neck and thus can only look back.

The bible claims that the prophet is never recognised in his own land. That's why Daniel O'Donnell sells all over the world and McCrea only sells in the Shankhill -- or is that analogy too deep for you?

You left me speechless above there, hi!

Help! All han's are swingin' for me now. Seems that the world just isn't ready yet for the heartfelt paeans of the poets laureate of the causes of stagnation, pomposity and trimuphalism.

So I'll l'ave yous all with with a last verse … with many thanks to Brother Isaac McKittery of LOL 1690 who reminded me not to forget it.

All the string vest Brother Fat.

The on-site facilities are hardly up to scratch
We pooly in a bucket and do the rest we crouch
Down in a corner of a field where the nettles sting our ass
For the cause of dear oul' Ulster, we wipe with a clipe of grass
We wipe with a clipe of grass, we wipe with a clipe of grass
For the cause of dear oul' Ulster, we wipe with a clipe of grass

If I was religious (which I'm not) I would say 'God deliver us from these pillocks'. I grew up in West Central Scotland of Protestant (Church of Scotland) upbringing and was surrounded by bigots like you 'Purple and Orange'. Live in the future not in the past. And while you talk about your right to march remember those wee boys who the bigots torched to death in their own house. They had a right to live.

Derrymacash

(Why anybody would want to name themselves after thon wee shinner huxter is beyond me … but there, as they say, you go.)

That remark you made about is wide of the mark, boyo, by a long shot. It's common knowledge that the "Campsite At Drumcree" was written by our loyal brothers as they camped out in that first summer of discontent. All hands chipped in, feverishly editing the words and honing it to perfection. Sorry if I'm coming on like a Queens University lecturer, but it's this authenticity which gives the song such resonance among our community.

The disparaging remarks you've made continue the age-old fallacy that it's only the taiglodytes that have any element of creativity or soul. The type of urban myth which no doubt contributes to the fact that Daniel O'Donnell records sell in cartloads the world over, whereas a troubadour from our own tradition, the Rev. William McCrea for example, struggles to shift any units whatsoever.

I'll give yous all a hand to think with a few more verses which a fellow white-glover passed my way.

On holidays some brethren go up North to Portrush Town
But I like to spend my fortnight in a field near Portadown
There are no flashing slot machines and no foaming billows roar
But we sit around the fire and sing "The Sash My Father Wore"
"The Sash My Father Wore", "The Sash My Father Wore"
We sit around the fire and sing "The Sash My Father Wore"

We don't care if it's lashing, our camp we'll not desert
For the causes's sake me boys, I'll proudly wade through dirt
(Besides my family residence is a few yards down the road
I sneak in round the back some nights when it gets a wee bit cold
When it gets a wee bit cold, when it gets a wee bit cold
I sneak in round the back some nights when it gets a wee bit cold)

Davebhoy ...

I think some hallion might be havin' us on ...

"I love to go a-wandering along the mountain track"?

A parody of "Wearing Of The Green"?

I reckon it's a joke ... like Lurgan Town was a pisstake in the last century.

Good to see the Unionist ability to rewrite history is alive and well.

To whom are you loyal? The Queen?? It was her government who appointed the Parades Commission so not accepting their ruling means you are disobeying a Royal command!!

Are you part of the same Loyal brethen who throws pipe bombs at BRITISH soldiers? Or even primary kids on their way to school?

Until I saw this I did not realise that people could type with their buttocks.

And before anyone spouts on about intolerance -- that works both ways. What would American say if the KKK wanted to march in Harlem? Or what would our "Guest" friend say if Nationalists in Ulster wanted to parade down the Shankhill Road every St Patrick's Day?

I know it takes all kinds to make a world, but we could be doing with a few less of some of them -- on BOTH sides of the Irish divide.

As an occasional visitor to this place, I'm bothered by the preponderance of songs in your databases that celebrate the Nationalist tradition in Ireland.

It's time this imbalance was redressed.

So here's a wee song I collected at a true blue sing-song a wee while back.

It's to the air that the other side uses for their "Wearing Of The Green".

THE CAMPSITE AT DRUMCREE

Oh then Sammy, dear, did you hear the news that's going round
Our brethren are forbid by law to march through Portadown
That's a piece of news, my boy, that makes my blood run cold
To think the loyal Orange cannot walk Garvaghy road
Cannot walk Garvaghy road, cannot walk Garvaghy road
To think the loyal Orange cannot walk Garvaghy road

They say the whinging fenians are kicking up a fuss
Along their road they do not want to see the likes of us
With our colours and our emblems and our bands, so young and keen
With their "Derry's Walls" and "Dolly's Braes" and the oul' "God Save The Queen"
The oul' "God Save The Queen", the oul' "God Save The Queen"
With their "Derry's Walls" and "Dolly's Braes" and the oul' "God Save The Queen"

If we're not allowed to march, whatever shall we do?
For we must show the world that we are loyal, brave and true
We'll put up such resistance, we'll bring England to its knees
So come on, Sam, stout Orangeman, we'll camp out in Drumcree
We'll camp out in Drumcree, we'll camp out in Drumcree
So come on, Sam, stout Orangeman, we'll camp out in Drumcree

Such a loyal encampment, you never 'fore did see
As the camp that was erected by the brave boys of Drumcree
Whenever there's a long weekend, the only place I'll go
Is to the orange campsite near the oul' Garvaghy Road
Near the oul' Garvaghy Road, near the oul' Garvaghy Road
Is to the orange campsite near the oul' Garvaghy Road

I love to go a wandering along the mountain track
But when I'm in those distant hills I'm longing to get back
For I long to sleep beneath the stars that twinkle high above
The camping site near Portadown, the wee town that I love
The wee town that I love, the wee town that I love
The camping site near Portadown, the wee town that I love
