Subject: Info on Judy Henski, 'Oh, G-L-O-R-Y ...' From: Haruo Date: 09 Feb 02 - 06:50 PM In the "Wanted: Songs for Alcoholics!" thread, Guest Hutzul mentioned "Judy Henski's Salvation Army Song G-L-O-R-Y I'm S-A-V-E-D I'm so H-A-P-P-Y To be F-R-Double E F-R-Double E From the ways of S-I-N Glory, glory, hallaluya Tra la la, Amen." I have made several vain attempts over the last couple of years to figure out who if anyone wrote the thing, which I perform frequently in AA meetings (or what pass for AA meetings where I go to meetings), including requests here at Mudcat, and so far nobody has ever come up with anything, so seeing this was very exciting to me. Does anybody have any further information on the connection between Judy Henski and "my" Salvation Army Song, or on Ms. Henski or the song separately? A Google search on her name turns up two brief mentions, one in a page on the 1960s TV show Hootenanny: Other groups on the shows were The Chad Mitchell Trio, Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs and the Foggy Mountain Boys, Judy Collins (who was an "item" with Mike Kubla at the time), Judy Henski, Glen Yarbough and probably some others I've forgotten in the intervening years."and one in a Japanglish webpage entitled Judy Henski and Jarry Yester / Farewell ArdeballanAdditional information would be most welcome. Subject: RE: Help: Info on Judy Henski, 'Oh, G-L-O-R-Y ... From: Bat Goddess Date: 09 Feb 02 - 07:05 PM Damn! I just went to my folk reference library and went over and over my collection of 1960s-era mass market paperbacks. I learned the song, c. 1966, from one of them, but I can't seem to find the right book, so I can't give you any reference. I'll keep looking. It might be in a pile rather than on the shelf. "Oh, V-I-C-T-O-R-Y from the bonds of S-I-N. Glory, glory halleluyah, tra-la-la, amen." Linn |

Subject: RE: Help: Info on Judy Henski, 'Oh, G-L-O-R-Y ... From: Haruo Date: 09 Feb 02 - 07:20 PM Thanks, Linn. Is that part you quoted the beginning of the song as you learned it, or the beginning of the refrain (as the "Oh G-L-O-R-Y..." part is in my version)? Did your version have the verses, or just the refrain? Liland (apologizing for the lousy MIDI) |

Subject: RE: Help: Info on Judy Henski, 'Oh, G-L-O-R-Y ... From: Haruo Date: 09 Feb 02 - 07:33 PM I see the reason I find so little when I search for Judy Henski... it's because her name is Judy Henske, and I just took Hutzul's incorrect word for it where the spelling was concerned. "Judy Henske" yields much more Google effluvium, starting with an official page of that name. Ah ha! Liland |

Subject: RE: Help: Info on Judy Henski, 'Oh, G-L-O-R-Y ... From: Jeri Date: 09 Feb 02 - 07:51 PM Anybody wants to hear Judy Henski sing The Salvation Army Song, there's a Real Audio of it here. The entire song. It's not the same song. I found a web reference to a song titled "Saved," written by Lieber-Stoller. |

Subject: RE: Help: Info on Judy Henski, 'Oh, G-L-O-R-Y ... From: Haruo Date: 09 Feb 02 - 08:29 PM I just posted a similar info request on Judy Henske's own website's message board, so the full scoop may be forthcoming perhaps even from Herself. Liland |

Subject: RE: Help: Info on Judy Henski, 'Oh, G-L-O-R-Y ... From: Haruo Date: 09 Feb 02 - 08:39 PM Yes, Jeri, that is indeed the same song. (And she does it even better than I do! 'Course she's got a better orchestra...) ;-) On the RealAudio clip she credits it to her music teacher "who is now in jail", and I have no idea if she meant it or just made him up. Is he the Mallory in question? Maybe Judy will know. Thanks for the reissue heads-up, Stewie. I'll see if the library has it. Liland |
