Subject: Tape wanted for an old Grossman Book From: murray@mpce.mq.edu.au Date: 02 Apr 98 - 08:16 PM I found an old Stefan Grossman Book in one of our local second-hand bookstores. It is called "Play Country Blues Guitar" and its copyright is 1978. It claims to have an accompanying tape and lp and it gives an address where to send for them. It takes a long time for a letter to reach a wrong address from here :) Does anyone know where I can get the tape. My turntable broke down some years ago and I can't play lps anymore. Hint, hint. Apropos of nothing. My guitar teacher has another book in this series which on the back has a picture of Mississippi John Hurt at some festival unpacking a six-string guitar. I just got his "last Sessions" album which shows a picture of him sporting a twelve-string. Does anyone know about what guitar(s) he used? Murray |

Subject: RE: Tape wanted for an old Grossman Book From: Dale Rose Date: 02 Apr 98 - 10:04 PM The album, How To Play Blues Guitar, is now available on CD, in an expanded version with 23 cuts,(71 minutes) Shanachie 98001/2, 1990. It features my absolute, all time favorite blues singer, Jo Ann Kelly, on nine of the songs, and Stefan himself even sings Oh, Babe Ain't No Lie. Other guests are Son House, Paul Rowan, Sam Mitchell, Mickey Baker, Mike Cooper, and John Renbourn. I hate to sound too enthusiastic every time I mention an album, but then, I practically never respond to things that I think sound like crap. |

Subject: RE: Tape wanted for an old Grossman Book From: Jon W. Date: 03 Apr 98 - 10:42 AM I had the great fortune of having a friend give me an old LP that was recorded by Stefan Grossman and Aurora (Rory) Block which I believe is also called "How to Play Blues Guitar." I had previously bought the book you mentioned and it gave me the start I needed, after I got the LP and could hear the songs. My LP differs from the CD that Dale mentions in that there are no vocals, it is strictly guitar solos (and a few duets) played in a demonstrational manner. The album cover itself says there is an accompanying booklet of guitar tab, but then inside was a piece of paper saying the booklet was too big to package with the record and where to send for it. I suspect the booklet eventually evolved into the book "Play Country Blues Guitar." There is one song on the LP that's not in the book and one song in the book that's not on the LP. I also suspect that the "Brownsville" song in the book is more complex than the one on the LP. Send me your snail-mail address in a personal message or email and I'll send you a cassette of the LP. Fortunately my turntable is still working. Unfortunately the LP is not in pristine condition so you'll have to put up with some pops and crackles. JonWhitney@juno.com |

Subject: RE: Tape wanted for an old Grossman Book From: Dale Rose Date: 03 Apr 98 - 01:34 PM Yes, Murray and I have communicated privately and determined that the albums have similar (but not quite the same) titles, but have different content.
In case anyone is interested, there is an address for instructional tapes in the booket of my CD: Stefan Grossman's Guitar Workshop, P.O. Box 802, Sparta, New Jersey 07871. Available are The Guitar of Robert Johnson, The Guitar of Blind Blake, The Guitar of Lonnie Johnson, and Masterpieces of Country Blues Guitar, all taught by Woody Mann, Blues Guitar, Country Blues Guitar Solos, Bottleneck Blues Guitar, The Guitar of Mississippi John Hurt, and The Guitar of Rev. Gary Davis, all taught by Stefan Grossman, and finally, Country Blues Bottleneck Guitar taught by Dean Sires. |
