Subject: And you thought Shatner was bad? From: GUEST,Celtic Soul, sans cookies Date: 04 May 02 - 12:46 AM This from one of my favorite websites, "HollywoodHollywood.com" :::snarf!!::: And it's even music related!! The Trouble With Tone Deaf Tribles: 4 Star Trek Actors Who Released Really Bad Albums Other Than William Shatner 1) Leonard Nimoy: Recorded 5 albums, including Two Sides of Leonard Nimoy (neither was good), The Way I Feel (tone deaf apparently) and Mr. Spock's Music From Outer Space. Songs included I'd Love Making Love To You, as scary as an image as I can ever remember having. 2) Nichelle "Uhura" Nichols: Included the hit single, "Beyond Antares." The planet Antares being by the way, the only place the album sold. 3) Brent "Data" Spiner: The CD was called, "Ol' Yellow Eyes Is Back." Dreamy, huh? 4) Grace Lee "Yeoman Janice Rand" Whitney: A disco album. But it wasn't nearly as good as the one made by John "The Guy In The Red Shirt Who Always Dies In The First 5 Minutes" Smith. Subject: RE: BS: And you thought Shatner was bad? From: khandu Date: 04 May 02 - 01:44 PM I am perplexed. I thought that I was a component of "all of us". If I am, does this mean that I also think Shatner is bad? If so, why do I think I think I love the man? There's something going on here, and I don't know what it is. Do I, Mr Amos? Life is one big conundrum, or, is it an enigma? Maybe it is just a crossword puzzle. I am perplexed. khandu |

Subject: RE: BS: And you thought Shatner was bad? From: Little Hawk Date: 04 May 02 - 11:13 PM Life is also an option! We all decided to take it for some reason, which is why we're here. Fear, however, is not an option. Not if you wanna wear a harvest gold lycra T-shirt and duke it out with reptilian starhip captains from Arcturus, and seduce hot babes from the Romulan Trade Mission. No Sir! Only the brave get to "boldy go where no man has gone before"... Ask the Great Shatner. He knows all about it. Regarding the music, I actually listened to some of the Nimoy songs the other day. Pretty dismal. Shatner's version of "Mr. Tambourine Man" is much more memorable, because Bill doesn't take the cowardly route, compromise, and try for a sound that's within normal radio conventions the way Nimoy does...he goes totally beyond that. Way beyond it. You have to hear it to believe it. - LH |

Subject: RE: BS: And you thought Shatner was bad? From: Mickey191 Date: 05 May 02 - 01:25 AM Khandu, I too am perplexed. You see I've been in love with Big Bill since I saw him 35 (A guess) yr.s ago on Broadway in the World of Susy Wong. He was and is, to this day, a hunk. (As you know) He was romantic & dashing & all the girls flipped over him.The pity is that it was a straight play so he didn't sing. Drat! I think the Fellows here at Mudcat are jealous of a real man. |

Subject: RE: BS: And you thought Shatner was bad? From: khandu Date: 05 May 02 - 01:33 AM Amen, Mickey191!!! Yes, yes, the Great Man is a hunk, and if my proclivities ran in that direction, I would drool over him! And, yes, I agree 100% that there is a green-eyed monster afoot in the Cafe! Amos, I fully understand. I, too, have an "all of us". I am pleased to hear that I am not alone! khandu |

Subject: RE: BS: And you thought Shatner was bad? From: Celtic Soul Date: 05 May 02 - 08:54 AM LH...I have heard Shatners version of "Mr. Tamborine Man". All I can say is that it reminded me of certain chemically altered states I once had as a youth. I have not, however, heard anything by Nimoy...and I think I am grateful. As for Shatner being sexy...yes, once upon a time, he was at that. But now? Hmmmmm....If I were about his age, I might think so. Our perception of "sexy" does tend to change with the years, doesn't it? I read a chain e-mail once that talked about what we are attracted to (as women) throughout our years. It starts with requirements like "washboard stomach, athletic, chisled features, great job", and then moves on to "Has most of his hair, does yardwork, is not glued to TV constantly", and at the very end, when you're very old, the only requirement listed was "Is still breathing".

Subject: RE: BS: And you thought Shatner was bad? From: Little Hawk Date: 05 May 02 - 02:11 PM Nimoy's renditions of popular song are...mediocre. He can sort of sing, up to a point. The arrangements are lacklustre and predictable. It sounds like it would if your average high school English teacher, a nice guy, decided to do an album of cover tunes. Some of the songs he chooses to do are a bit surprising, but there are no other surprises whatsoever. Shatner on the other hand sounds like no other, skirting the thin line that is drawn between raving insanity and (dare I say it) godlike genius! :-) You have to be either totally mad, divinely inspired, or in the grip of an ego the size of Rhode Island to have the nerve to do what William Shatner has done... It's a damn shame that those Dylan/Shatner sessions fell apart before realizing their full potential. The world of recorded music would have been changed forever. Spaw - I'm puzzled. You are "infinitely sexier"...than what??? - LH |

Subject: RE: BS: And you thought Shatner was bad? From: khandu Date: 05 May 02 - 06:35 PM Yes, yes...the Spaw/Shatner Fiasco! Wonder how much our dear Spaw paid various Catters to vote for him. Or was it done by bribery, blackmail and deceit? BTW, Little Hawk, it was the Great Man's version of "Mr. Tambourine Man" that turn Dylan on to the idea of the Shatner/Dylan Sessions. Dylan was "blown away by the Man's stylings", and immediately discussed the possibilities with Grossman. Grossman, being somewhat intimidated by the Great Man (Sort of like our Spaw), tried to dissuade Bob from pursuing the idea. But Bob was adamant. But, alas, the great Egos clashed over the billing, and it all went to hell. Can you imagine what today's music would be like had the Sessions occurred!! khandu |

Subject: RE: BS: And you thought Shatner was bad? From: Amos Date: 05 May 02 - 07:06 PM I just DIE thinking about the lost opportunity of hearing them together on "Girl from the North Country", or "Just Like a Woman"!!! LOL!!! A |

Subject: RE: BS: And you thought Shatner was bad? From: Celtic Soul Date: 05 May 02 - 09:22 PM LH? I'll take door #3, "ego the size of Rhode Island". However, I don't think it so unusual for Hollyweird to spawn egos that size or larger.

Subject: RE: BS: And you thought Shatner was bad? From: Little Hawk Date: 06 May 02 - 02:26 AM Right on, Khandu! Your keen grasp of Shatner's vital role in reshaping musical and societal mores in the late 20th century never ceases to impress me. As you suggest, it was a clash of egos that put the kibosh to the Dylan/Shatner project. Not that surprising, really. I remember when Dylan and Baez were trying to settle on a poster design for their 1963 tour, and Eric Von Schmidt went to great lengths to design one that appeared to give them both first billing...it's a cool poster, and no doubt worth a fortune if you can find an original one somewhere. Alas, no such poster was made for Dylan & Shatner. Of course, they didn't tour together, so... I'd personally like to hear Big Bill have a go at "Brownsville Girl" sometime...THAT would be something to hear! - LH |
