PRESS RELEASE

For immediate release on or after May 17, 2002:

CB's 313 Gallery to host Second Annual Woody Guthrie Birthday Bash.

Round Robin Songfest to take place at New York City club on Sunday, July 14, 2002, from 7:00 to 9:00 PM.

Noted New York acoustic nightspot, CB's 313 Gallery, will play host to a two-hour songfest honoring the 90th birthday of American folk legend Woody Guthrie. This Second Annual Woody Guthrie Birthday Bash will begin at 7:00 PM, Sunday, July 14, 2002. $5 cover allows patrons to stay all night and hear other acts as well.

Born in Okemah, Oklahoma, on July 14, 1912, Woody Guthrie lived in New York off and on from 1940 until his death from Huntington's disease in 1967. This Birthday Bash celebration will feature Guthrie's music performed in round-robin fashion by a variety of local artists. Among them are Jessica Feinbloom, Anne Price, Eric Levine, Joel Landy, and Steve Suffet. Expect to hear several guest artists as well, including maritime musician Frank Woerner.

CB's 313 Gallery is located at 313 Bowery in the NOHO/East Village section of Lower Manhattan. It is just next door to the famed CBGB's and is under the same ownership. For information about CB's 313 Gallery, please call (212) 677-0455.

WILL SHE COME ACROSS TO NEW YORK?

To be sung to the tune of Red Wing by Thurland Chattaway & Kerry Mills. Tune used by Woody Guthrie for Union Maid.

New words by Stephen L. Suffet © 2001, 2002

In the town that they call Fort Lee,
In the State of New Jersey,
Lived a pretty lass with an old guitar,
She played in every pub and bar.
When she played a country song,
The barflies sang along,
But then one night I tried to lure,
That pretty lass to the New York shore.

Chorus: Oh, will she come across to New York,
Across to New York, across to New York?
Oh, will she come across to New York,
To the Guthrie Birthday Bash?

Will she climb that Pallisade ridge,
And cross that Washington Bridge?
Or slide on down to Hoboken,
And use her last PATH train token?
Or maybe this sweet hon'll,
Take the Lincoln Tunnel,
Or if her bank roll's wearing thin,
Maybe she'll just swim!

[Repeat chorus.]

When she climbs out of the river,
A towel I will give 'er,
And when she's safely on dry land,
I'll put a guitar in her hand.
Then we'll sing and play duet,
In the sweetest harmony yet,
And if she has five bucks in cash,
She'll be at the Birthday Bash.

[Repeat chorus.]

---- Steve

Sounds like it's going to be a lot of fun. I've been an Anne Price fan for years. I'll see if I can make it up to New York that weekend.

Anne & Steve & gang, I'm on my way. Are there any good songs about the Metroliner? Ha! By the way, have you heard that Bruce Molsky has moved back up your way? He's left the Old Dominion State for Beacon, New York. That's Pete Seeger country, about an hour and a half from the Big Apple. Right?

I had a great time and a pleasant weekend in New York. What really impressed me is the show started on time and went two-and-a-half hours, all for just $5. The drinks were pretty reasonably priced for a New York club, and there was no required minimum. And as the ads promised, you could stay all night and hear other acts as well, which I did for about an hour. They were a pretty decent lounge band with lots of original material. I really felt sorry for them, because the Woody Guthrie Birthday Bash packed the house, meaning about 70 or 80 people, and almost everyone left as soon as it was over. Only 5 or 6 people remained to hear them. All in all, CB's Gallery has to be one of the best entertainment bargains in the Big Apple.

There were some really pleasant surprises. The duet of Anne Price and Toby Fagenson is fantastic. As I wrote earlier, I've been an Anne Price fan for a while, but I've never heard her sing with Toby before. What a delight! Another surprise was Steve Suffet backing up people on the harmonica. It sounds like he's spending a lot of time listening to recordings with Sonny Terry backing up Lead Belly and Woody!
