Malçji

Kuliet rijas, kûlçjiòi, Maliet mâïa, malçjiòi!
Nokûluði, samaluði Pieceliet mâmuliòu,

Man, bitît, man, bitît, Sav' meitiò, malçjiò':
Man bij vaska dzirnaviòas, Âbeïkoka maltuvîte. Es to savu rîta mâli Ar dziesmâm sadziedâju,
Lai nesaka citi ïaudis,- Darba dçï noskumusi.

Malçjiòa tâ meitiòa, Apputçjis vainadziòð;
Dravenieka tas dçliòðVaska cimdi rociòâ.
Seði rîti nedçïâ, Visus seðus malti gâju,
Pirmo rîtu maizi malu, Otro rîtu - iesaliòu;

Treðajâ rîtiòâ Brâïam malu ceïa maizi;
Ceturtâ rîtiòâ Putraimiòus trinkðíinâju;

Vâverîte malti gâja, Sesku sûta druviòâ;
Samalusi, izcepusi, Panâk sesku celiòâ.
Man bij vaska dzirnaviòas Pie vârtiem ozolâ;
Kad aizgâju, tad dabûju Bites meitu malçjiòu.

Bij man vaska dzirnaviòas Ozoliòa galdiòiem;

He's just showing me up, complaining about the Irish language songs. But while I don't always trouble myself with translations, I do give some sort of explanatory notes. I'd love to hear the music to this one; I usually like the sound of eastern European songs and tunes.

I copy/pasted this from a Latvian folk song site which does not provide translations or tunes.

The point is, it's bloody useless to post songs in a language that is unknown to the reader. I love the sound of Gaelic, sung and spoken, but I don't understand it, and don't have the time to learn it; and I'm sure the same is true for the majority of people who visit and/or post here. I've made several requests to members of our Gaelic contingent for help with translations (not the same thing as a brief summary), with no response other than curt rebuffs.

Since the folks who post the Gaelic lyrics on this English-language website obviously know both languages, I fail to understand why there could not be a higher degree of cooperation. Or, if they are intent on keeping it to themselves, maybe they're posting in the wrong forum.

The point is, it's childish of you to complain about lack of references in other threads and then deliberately pick an obscure song/language about which you have no information. There's also a question of Netiquette: you failed to give credit to the website from which you got the lyrics

Yes, I am happy to see lyrics in any language at Mudcat. They will be of interest to someone. And as you rightly point out, if there is sufficient background information, the contributions will have wider interest.

Personally, I do provide some information in English when I post Gaelic songs. This may be very extensive or it may just be "This is a song of unrequited love", "This is a song about fishing for herring", but there is something I know someone else posted a song recently with no note apart from the name of a singer who recorded it, but I privately sent her a note suggesting that she does provide minimal information with her submissions. And you have to appreciate that most of the Gaelic -Irish or Scottish - submissions are in response to requests and that there is a definite sub-group of Mudcatters with a strong interest in Gaelic song and some knowledge of the language. (although not necessarily so much that they can provide full translations for everyone)

Now if somebody shows up to give us more information about 'Malcji', that will be super!

I don't understand it, and don't have the time to learn it

So why trouble yourself with it at all, Michael? There are plenty of songs posted here that are like a foreign language to me (the numerous gospel song threads, for example), so I keep to the areas I'm familiar with, when I don't have time to do more research of my own.

I notice you had time to search for a suitably incomprehensible set of lyrics to make your point. You give the impression that you are the only person here with limited time. What makes you think that Philippa et al have more time than you? Given their limited time, should they then not post at all? I don't think so.

I see this forum as being a place to share of our knowledge, freely, in as much detail as we are able, given time and other constraints. Philippa certainly does this- I can't see what your problem is, Michael, sorry.

So sorry about the breach of etiquette!

If Philippa et al don't have the time to post translations, they could certainly say so themselves, non? But they haven't; instead I get the impression that they don't care to be helpful to folks who aren't part of their little insider clique. That's their prerogative; I certainly cannot make demands of anyone. But as the Mudcat is a forum where people come to learn, and I am very much interested in Gaelic song, it is frustrating to me when the ones who are in the know want to keep their knowledge to themselves. No rancor is intended.

Michael

It's a shame the benefits of Pentecost Sunday were given to so few.
