Subject: RE: Help: BIG BLOW AND THE BUSHWACKERS ARE BACK- From: Bob Bolton Date: 12 Aug 02 - 11:37 PM G'day Conrad, I see there's been a little bit of good old Yankee thievery with the Bushwacker name ... used for the last 30 years by the biggest name band in the Australian Folk Revival - Folk/Rock end. Not that I feel any remorse for the the Australian band's claims on the name (©, ®, ™, &c) ... they can use their own barracudas to argue about that - the same way that they have just told the 5 surviving members of the ("Real") BushwHackers ... the band that launched the Australian Folk Revival back in the early 1950s that, if they hold a 50 year reunion and use the name they made famous ... they will be sued for every penny they have! In Australia, "Bushwhacker" means a bushman, a hard doer in the tough bush work. The later bands seem to prefer some of the nastier American connotations of the name. Regards, Bob Bolton |

Subject: RE: Help: BIG BLOW AND THE BUSHWACKERS ARE BACK- From: GUEST,cbladey@bcpl.net Date: 13 Aug 02 - 08:34 AM G'Day to you too! I think if one finds onesself(selves) to be described by the term it is appropriate to use it. These guys are real real hard workers. The complete name is the full title. I have never seen a band sweat so much during performance. High energy, fantastic innovation, crowd interaction. The living here playing folk music ain't at all easy. As others have pointed out they have made their complete name its own history and following, the hard way and one finds it easy enough to tell the two bands appart-no attempt at imitation. Although names make good conversation I direct you to the joys of music and the wonder of performance. They are playing in Columbia Maryland tomorrow night Centenial Park 7PM. The concert is free and open to the public. You will find high energy, technical as well as artistic innovation and lots of audience interaction. You should also find anoher wacky guy with a truck covered with brass instruments joining in (tha'd be me). For music samples and a load of information contact: Conrad |

Subject: RE: Help: BIG BLOW AND THE BUSHWACKERS ARE BACK- From: Bob Bolton Date: 13 Aug 02 - 08:48 AM G'day again Conrad, I reckon there's a quite bit of ocean ... and a not inconsiderable patch of land ... between Sydney, Australia and Clumbia, Maryland - definitely too much to traverse between now and tomorrow night! I might retract a fair percentage of the slur on you Yanks ... my annoyance is at the Australian group that wants to make preemptive claim on a band name that became virtually in public domain in the 1950s, with the number of "Bush Bands" modelling themselves on The Bushwhackers Band - and calling themselves "The (wherever) Bushwhackers". Anyway, have fun ... massed didges and brass ... Hmmmm ...! Regards, Bob Bolton |

Subject: RE: Help: BIG BLOW AND THE BUSHWACKERS ARE BACK- From: GUEST,cbladey@bcpl.net Date: 13 Aug 02 - 11:06 AM Good to hear! Big blow is doing some amazing stuff. Just heard some of their new work last night. In exchange for your kind words I want to send you right out for a treasure of a CD in a related mode. Distant Shores- The Ragged Band P.O. Box 1492 Pots Point, NSW 2011 Australia Carrl Myhriad,Tony Jones, Chris Lofven, Glen Bawick, Paul Burjan, Alan Healy, John Prior, Chris Bailey I just got my copy yesterday. Great stuff. Especially fantastic is the smooth and audable singing of the celtic languages. So often those singing songs in Cornish, or welsh are not comfortable with the language and either go nasal or unintelligible. Great songs and delivery. More later when the review gets written. It takes an australian band to get the music back into the bush, woods forest and streams and they do a great job....more later. Conrad |

Subject: RE: Help: BIG BLOW AND THE BUSHWACKERS ARE BACK- From: Bob Bolton Date: 14 Aug 02 - 12:06 AM G'day Conrad, I know Carrl Myriad quite well - and often hear him sing at my local folk club (The Loaded Dog, < http://www.loadeddog.live.com.au/ >) a 10-minute walk from my home. I have the CD ... and Ragged Band have been booked in various gigs by the agency operated by my wife Patricia! Carrl gets his Cornish right because he has formally studied (his ancestral lnaguage) under a Professor of Cornish Language. He is very keen on, and proud of his Celtic (not necessarily the same thing as Irish) ancestry ... Now as long as you can get used to him looking a bit like a life-sized, older version of Asterix (of the French Goscini & Uderzo [~] comics) ... ! Regards, Bob Bolton |

Subject: RE: Help: BIG BLOW AND THE BUSHWACKERS ARE BACK- From: GUEST,cbladey@bcpl.net Date: 14 Aug 02 - 07:07 AM The small world of the internet.... I am looking for an e.mail contact for the band..... The web page listed on the cd is not working or was not when tried the other day. Yes...I knew the background. Around here it is rare to find anyone who can sing in the celtic languages properly. I need to connect the band to a few important D.J. players of folk music here. Conrad |

Subject: RE: Help: BIG BLOW AND THE BUSHWACKERS ARE BACK- From: Bob Bolton Date: 14 Aug 02 - 09:01 AM G'day again Conrad, I have not e-mailed Carrl for a while ... but I have < carrlmyriad@ozemail.com.au > and that looks pretty right. Their 1996 CD Up the Sides and Down the Middle had an e-mail address for Tony: < ajones@world.net > ... but the way dot.coms have .com and .gon, that may be a bit far back. If your copy of Distant Shores has the same insert as mine, you should also have the web site: http://people.enternet.com.au/~havok/The_Ragged_Web/Index.htm. Good luck! Regards, bob Bolton |

Subject: RE: Help: BIG BLOW AND THE BUSHWACKERS ARE BACK- From: Sandra in Sydney Date: 14 Aug 02 - 09:10 AM Carrl is also a good friend of mine, he & Bob are also supporters of the Loaded Dog, the folk club I nominally run - with their help & the help of lots of other talented folkies. Carrl recently received an honour from the Cornish Association (or whatever it is called)- a Cornish title that translates as Eminent person!! I will forward this page to him so he can see the good stuff his local & overseas fans have written!! Sandra |

Subject: RE: Help: BIG BLOW AND THE BUSHWACKERS ARE BACK- From: GUEST,cbladey@bcpl.net Date: 14 Aug 02 - 10:15 AM Good to hear! I tried the web page and it is not working... If they need web help I can get them a temp page at least up in a few seconds.....and if the other page gets working we can pull it. Or a brief long term page...that would also be do-able. They should not go without! I am doing a review....I want it well written so it may take a few days.... Big Blow and the Bushwackers concert is tonight. I will bring the cd to share with the rest of the band and fans after the concert. I will print out a few copies of their mailing address and have those ready... So hot here on the east coast it might as well be Australia! Conrad

Subject: RE: Help: BIG BLOW AND THE BUSHWACKERS ARE BACK- From: Bob Bolton Date: 15 Aug 02 - 02:48 AM G'day Conrad, I just tried the link and it did not work for me either. I afraid there has been a lot of small ISPs &c falling by the wayside lately ... and that looks as if it was only a free "web site hosting" from an ISP. Of course, they may have something more substantial now ... Tony Jones is the IT-savvy one amongst them ... the others tend more to the Luddite end of things! I'm away to the Blue Mountains in a few hours, so I won't catch up to Carrl's current web site - if any - until next week. (Sandra ...?) Regards, Bob Bolton |

Subject: RE: Help: BIG BLOW AND THE BUSHWACKERS ARE BACK- From: Bob Bolton Date: 15 Aug 02 - 09:10 AM G'day Conrad, I did an "intelligent search" on the phrase "Carrl Myriad" and got 36 hits ... 33 of which were our lad - you can't hide on the web when you spell your name "Carrl"! (the others just happened to have both varieties of the name 'Carl' and the word 'myriad' in the same sentence). The consensus seems to be that the e-mail I gave is current and valid ... but no current web site. Regards, Bob |

Subject: RE: Help: BIG BLOW AND THE BUSHWACKERS ARE BACK- From: SharonA Date: 15 Aug 02 - 09:18 AM Glad to see that this is a thread about a band, and not another so-called "porn" thread (the terms "big blow" and "bushwhacker" do indeed have nasty connotations here in the US). Why does this thread have a "Help" prefix? |
