I looked up the song "Down in the Valley to Pray" in the forum and found lyrics and information, but now I can't find it. My cousin who is a choir director, would like to have the choir sing this at their church. I know it was recorded by Doc Watson, but does anyone have the written music for it? Ever seen it arranged for SATB? Thanks for your help

If you go to the top of the threads and enter O Brother Where Art Thou, then use the drop down menu to set the age back about a year, you should get a bunch of threads which will come up about the movie and its featured songs. I am sure there is more info on it in one of them, but it probably hasn't been indexed yet, so wouldn't show up in a search. Have fun!

Same song, just "river" instead of "valley". I had always heard it as "valley" before the movie came out.

Was the word "valley" changed to "river" in order to copyright a trad song----or maybe someone else's song??

"O Brothers Let's Go Down," "Good Old Way," "I Went Down In The Valley to Pray," or "Down To The River To Pray," etc., is an old Negro spiritual. See Work, American Negro Songs and Spirituals, "I Went Down In the Valley." See Allen, Slave Songs of the United States (1867), "Good Old Way."
Most versions, white and black, have been posted.
