While making a posting on another thread yesterday, about the song "The Shipyard Slips", I used the word "luddite" and the verse of a song popped into my head. I only heard it once, a very long time ago, on a BBC radio schools programme. Here are the words as I recall them:

The good old days are gone, me boys, the good old days of pudding and beef For stealing a chicken, a cow or an ass would serve now to bring us to grief For kicking up Charlie or kissing a lass Or breaking up stocking-frames, iron or brass Would gain us a pretty hemp necklace alas In the days of General Lud.

Come to think of it, I can't recall any other songs about luddites. But I'd be very surprised if they didn't exist

Thank you kindly for that reply and for that web. None of my own searches found that one. And in that web there was not single song I had ever before come across. Good stuff. I now suspect that the song I recall was specially written for the programme, although it had a traditional feel to it
Anyway, thanks again.
