Of course not all the spirited and contemplative tunes are an hour long, Slipback. That would be silly and would short-change our devoted following. Four of the more contemplative tracks are 1 hour 20mins apiece. The most frivoulous of the spirited pieces is briefly half an hour long.

These hour long songs sound jolly Keeblesque, Oakers. I fear that your principled stand on shameless plugging might create the impression amongst the record-buying public that 'A slurp behind the sooty' is worse than it actually is.

But had you played her Mnm's latest what would her reaction have been? Anyway I'm not purchasing CDs but rather Bear9 mats. Also sleeping behind the sofa is a very uncomfortable thing to do and not recommended for those who own dogs!

Done, smalllepper. You may be interested to read one person'd reaction to "Asleep Behind the Settee". I can't claim that this is typical, but what does "Can we have another CD on please?" tell you about the quality of the album that you have secured at a discount. The reviewer was Skipjack's youngest. What perception from one so young.

It will be great to see you Willa (and your hordes) at the Half Moon, Elloughton, East Yorkshire, UK, Earth. That Dean has a cheek, promoting stuff on here.

If this was him, he'd probably bang on about his CD. The fact that Cara will refuse to publicise the fact that the album "Asleep Behind the Settee" - a collection of original and traditional, spirited, contemplative tunes and songs of over an hour in length - is available for only £12 at the gig or £13 by request to david.oakley7@btopenworld.com, is an indication of how important Cara feels about keeping this site free from shameless self-promotion.

DeanMeister, this forum is not just an opportunity to publicise your musical exploits. It is a place to discuss wider items of musical interest with a community of those with a genuine interest in folk and blues music. When Cara plays at the Half Moon in Elloughton, East Yorkshire on the 4th October at 9.00, or even at Cherry Burton Village Hall on th 11th October at 8.30, I am sure it will be done without even mentioning the fact on this forum. Desist at once.

Sadly the tweed skirt and cardigan appeared to be missing, David. But perhaps eternal happiness has finally arrived for you.

And Smallpliers, I was sure it was the one on the right that won. Perhaps I was getting mirror image due to being sat opposite, as opposed to beside Ms Routledge. Or was it the bear9 number six that coloured my judgement on the issue????

Nonononononononononono Cyclists are a danger to smallpiper on the A164 - Nikki is even worse she wanted to lean out of the car and steal your fiddle or at least get hold of it then have me accelerate up to 120 miles per hour so that you would get a good take off at the top of Skidby hill! On the up side you'd have crossed the Humber without reference to the bridge!

As for Penny............ Dang they were big and loud, independant and not always in tune or the right key!

You know to what I reffer Oakers!

DeanMeister, I urge Oakley standards of tolerance here. I think she may have been Ms Penelope Rutledge and I have been nurturing a desire to spend the rest of my days with her, shoulder to shoulder; shoplifting, drinking super-strength lager and giggling hysterically whilst breaking wind in gun shops.

Enjoyed the session until bear9 number 4, then was content to watch the whole thing find its own dynamic, or rather Penelope's, during bears9 5, 6 and 7. I managed to discuss my flea infestation with Dodgy-bird.

Smallpliers is a danger to cyclists on the 164.

Thanks for the encouragement on the A164, I noticed a terrible smell of onions all afternoon, I think it is your terrible diet and nothing to do with me at all.

Hi, Bassie- yes tis' me- the singer of shanty type songs. I wanted to make it to the session at Hessle. Never quite got chance.

I will be in Hanoi, Vietnam for 1 year- i've been here for about three weeks- i've got to do another year at old Bishop Burton College from Sept 2003. I'm looking forward to it- although the presence of Folk in Beverley does fuel my enthusiasm- just a little bit.

Punch the Horse- well Hornsea could be tricky- I'll see if I can't get you a booking in Hanoi. Traditional Vietnamese wedding- well it would make a change from the bloody Karaoke- very popular over here.

Oh, while your'e singing one for me- have a pint as well because the beer over here is pretty rough. They do a draught beer called 'Beer Hoi'- well i'll say no more.

Well apart from the poor beer and lack of Folk I am actually having a good time- Vietnamese culture etc. Keep writing Chris

Bass player who sits in front of the Piano at Nellies here.

Have missed your singing the last few times, always enjoyed it when you sang, hows Hanoi? Are we likely to see you back in E.Yorks again in the future? Am I correct in thinking you also came to a session at The Hase in Hessle or was it somewhere else?

Anyway, good luck in foreign parts! Hope to see and hear you somewhere in the future!

Hello all, It's Chris here- the one who said goodbye to work in Hanoi, Vietnam for a year.

In my one year living in Beverley (studying at Bishop Burton College) I was a regular at the Folk Club and tried to be a regular at the Sunday sessions.

I thoroughly enjoyed my year in Beverley- I'm bloody jealous to hear you lot talking about it actually. Speaking as someone from a new town where you'd struggle to find one decent pub to hold a session of any kind, I would be very sorry to see this session move from Nellies- but at the end of the day- if peoples enjoyment is being spoilt in some way, well...

Sing some songs for me- missing you all a hell of a lot Chris

DeanMister, I'm glad you posted this because I turned up last week for the session and not a soul was in sight. At first I thought I'd got the time wrong so I walked around Beverley for a bit then went back and still no one was there. So I thought, perhaps they break for the summer? Anyway it's a good job half the women in our village think you're sexy or I wouldn't forgive you!

See you at the session, it's been ages and I'm looking forward to it!

I think it would be a real shame to lose the connection with such a place but I agree with Mick that there are other places that would make us welcome.... the PVFF proved that.

I cannot recall a single occasion when the fact that kids are included has caused a problem and some of them are definite regulars and as such deserve our loyalty... I would say if they go we go!! Nellies has a brilliant atmosphere... but so does anywhere in the right company!

I also intend to rectify the children situation. Cos I still think that stinks.

Here is my opinion for what it is worth.I will take the chance on being called a bit of a fence sitter.

Are we going to be dictated to by a boozers labourer when she might be taking the high road in a couple of weeks? Having a bad day my arse!!!!!! I have seen those objectionable notices about setting man traps and advocating flogging and transportation for the little mites who dare sashay into the hallowed darts boutique.

The track record for managers (and that is all they are)is not good, we have seen several changes in the last four years.

This self apointed folk music police person should be apraised of a few facts about our beloved sessions.

The session in Nellies has been running for four years now.In that time countless thousands of pounds have been put across the bar for the benefit of Samual Smiths shareholders by people like myself and all you lot.

For whant of a better word (god I hate the term folkie)the peformers and afficianados of the folk music tradition are not usually noted for there unruly behavior, indeed in the four years I have co hosted this gig with the deanmeister (thats your bonfire urinated on oakley) I have not seen one bit of trouble, not even dummy spitting out peter!!

Any children that have turned up have been well behaved and in a lot of cases have contributed to the sessions, most of all they have been in the collective care of all the peopple at the session, not just there parents, were do you see that in the so called children friendly pubs were in a lot of cases children are allowed to run riot? In the words of the great Robert Tressle " A place that is not fit for women and children does not deserve to exist" That certainly is not the case in Nellies.

All the people who turn up to do a bit are all vollunteers and are not under any contract to appear. We do it because we love and enjoy doing it,and for the most part so do all the regulars.

It would be nice if the odd pint was slipped across, but to me that is not important, what is would be nice, not to say polite even, is that we get a little apreciation,a simple "thank you" would be enough,as they staggered to the safe under the weight of the till containing all our collective monies.

It would be a thousand pities if all that had been built up over the last years were to be destroyed by one short sited, vindictive, beige person.

The Nellies pub is a great tradition with great links with the Folk Music tradition, let us keep that in mind.

However,it will no harm to mention to the said boozers labourer that, as people have stated there are more pubs in the area, the one at the other end of Beverley Westwood springs to mind,I only know it as the Drum and Monkey it used to have a folk freindly landlord .I dont know if that still is the case.

I am only sorry I wont be able to attend this weeks session, the manager of Punch the Horse has got other plans for me,will watch this space with bated breath for any feedback.

The Purple Helmets have been engaged to appear at the unveiling of a fat barrister's new chin in Heage on Sunday afternoon. Our management company does not permit two appearances on the same day. October's outrage will make up for it. Perhaps it was August's display that brought out the Ms Penelope Rutledge in the licensee.

Specky, the Cara performance and heckling workshop is on Friday night at the Moulders Arms. Hope to see you there.

Erm, the session at Nellies. In my experience, a session can be big enough to withstand disinterest and hostility from the proprietor, but only for the short-term; eventually resentment starts to colour how one perceives the experience of actully being there. That is the point at which it often starts to become derailed. It would be a great pity to lose the chance to play at Nellies, but there are other venues and the licensee should be made aware of this fact, gently and objectively if she persists with the hostility. Perhaps she was just having a bad day, Deanmeister.
