Subject: RE: TechDammit: Lost PopUp Killer From: GUEST Date: 23 Sep 02 - 02:45 AM When Norton Anti-Virus won't install, it (and some other programs also) can often be installed in 'safe' mode. Copy the whole cd into a folder on your desktop, go into safe and run the setup from the folder. As For popup killers, there are a lot of them. One is built into the Opera browser, which is free, with ads. |

Subject: RE: TechDammit: Lost PopUp Killer From: Sorcha Date: 23 Sep 02 - 08:11 PM OK, I finally found (Google) the pop up killer I want but Norton still won't install (I tried Safe Mode). Also, I can't acess Word at all--says it is not installed and it should be..........it's on the Recovery/ReInstall/ReFormat disc. Also lost the printer and scanner. Thought I had the printer re-installed (it says it is) but it won't print. I also can't figure out how to get my e mail address book from the floppy to the address book.........."my geek" is coming over later tonight but I would appreciate any help you can offer in the meantime. Thanks! |

Subject: RE: TechDammit: Lost PopUp Killer From: khandu Date: 23 Sep 02 - 10:05 PM A couple of months ago, I downloaded a pop-up killer that works quite wonderfully. However, every time I log on, I must do the whole set-up routine to activate the thing. But, I guess it is worth the wee bit of trouble, considering the amount of pop-ups I had been getting. khandu |

Subject: RE: TechDammit: Lost PopUp Killer From: Mudlark Date: 23 Sep 02 - 10:48 PM I've got a Norton you can have as it doesn't work on my iMac...but it probably doesn't work on your computer either, come to think of it, if it's a PC.... Let me know if you want it... |

Subject: RE: TechDammit: Lost PopUp Killer From: Sorcha Date: 23 Sep 02 - 11:27 PM I have the damn disc, Mudlark, it installed the last time, it just won't this time! It is NOT fun being this angry at somebody and not knowing just who it is I am angry with. Somebody seriously mucked up my computer and of course nobody will 'fess up. Wouldn't even do any good to ask. I have my suspicions, but if I yelled at him I would get either--1)"I didn't do anything" or 2)"I don't know........." so why bother yelling? |

Subject: RE: TechDammit: Lost PopUp Killer From: Gypsy Date: 23 Sep 02 - 11:31 PM er......don't kick me but.........have you done a no shit defrag yet? sometimes that will do the trick. Or completely uninstall norton, then put it back in. |

Subject: RE: TechDammit: Lost PopUp Killer From: NicoleC Date: 24 Sep 02 - 01:14 AM Even if data is recovered, a lot of times you have to reinstall the software programs to reset the registry info. The program files are there, Windoze just doesn't know how to find them. That's probably your Word problem. Before you do anything drastic, try a utility called RegCleaner (not RegClean). You can download it at www.download.com. Delete out ALL the Norton registry stuff, restart, then try installing Norton again. Er, caveat -- when futzing with the registry, ALWAYS backup your data. |

Subject: RE: TechDammit: Lost PopUp Killer From: mack/misophist Date: 24 Sep 02 - 01:30 AM If this becomes too catastrophic, may I suggest that you divide into three or at least two partitions. That way you never lose data. One smallish partition for Windows, one larger one for programs (just dont let them install to Windows\programs, and one for data (My Documents can be redirected to any place you want it to be.) Partition sizes would depend on how you use your machine. While you're at it, copy all the Windows cab files to c: or someplace like that. It's WAY convenient. |

Subject: RE: TechDammit: Lost PopUp Killer From: Sorcha Date: 24 Sep 02 - 01:55 AM OK, I've done both of those--found stuff with Regcleaner that I thought I had deleted and or uninstalled.....didn't help with Norton or Word. I can get to Word with the Search/Files function and I did finally get the printer to function........but Norton still says it can't scan e mail. I do have the icon back on the bottom task bar but it doesn't seem to be operating properly. Thanks for trying!! PS--My "geek" didn't show up tonight--maybe tomorrow!! |

Subject: RE: TechDammit: Lost PopUp Killer From: mack/misophist Date: 24 Sep 02 - 09:43 AM I use Eudora e-mail and Norton tends to overwrits the server addresses with somer nonsense of it's own. Check your e-mail set-up.For reg clean up, I prefer easy clean. Remember! Messing with your registry is always dangerous. If things are too bad, you can always reinstall Windows. It might be less hassle. |
