You lucky Limeys, you're in for a treat. Make sure that you can fit some time in to see Guy.

Guy, It's a pity you're not going to be in the South East. There's a great potter named John Solly in Maidstone. I took a one week full time course with him many years ago.

Monday 21st, get to the White Lion in Swinton while you're in the Manchester area, meet several mudcatters there.

I'm sure Dave the Gnome will agree when he's back from working away all week- it's his club.

Looking foprward to meeting you, Guy.

Hey Bert, thanks I would love to meet John Solly.. I would like to hear your singing even more though.. Some day I will meet MAx as well ... I still think a trip to Witby would be heaven for a batch of American Folkies to show up at.!!
Noreen the white Lion sounds like a go to me.. "Ya Hoo" as we yanks say.. And Swinton is where????
THere must be something going on on SUnday the 20th in Yourkshire or Northumberland somewhere>>>
All the best to all here.. Even the ones I havent met through the gab I have missed this last 6 mounths..
I have played with so meny new people because of Mudcat.. Thanks as always to Max.. The group in Berkley was a blast.. If I can pull together the time when I'm out visiting Smith & Hawken I love to see them. I am calling the third CD "OUT AND ABOUT"just because the playing with new people have inspired me to rethink some music again.. I am doing Love Sick Blues ala Emmet Miller on slide guitar and even Loveley Joan as a sort of morracan thing but with tons of nods to the great Martin Carthy.. Lui Collins has retaught me a vertion of Sally Anne and I put it together with Old Plank rd on a Mike Ramsey Open Back Banjo.. also Shady Groves as a nod to RAulph Rindzler and his great work at bringing Clarence Ashley out into the world again back at the New Port Folk Festaval in 1963(?).. My Faverite though is a vertion of East Verginia that I put on guitar in dadgad (THIrD FRET)and frailing banjo(F sus4) after Banjo Bonnie showed it to me last year.. All in all THough I dont get out here much Mudcat has had a great effect on me so thank you all

Thanks Eric,
Let me know if there is anything in musical parafilallia I should bring.. I know a friend of Bill Sable's asked for help finding a victor capo.. Strings are always a nice road present.. Since I'm not bringing guitar and banjo maybe strings would be good as a thankyou for letting me play a string or two..

Hi Guy - Sunday 20th October is the regular sunday session in York at the Golden Globe Inn. It's mostly American tunes - Old Time, some old country, and a few British tunes, with the odd song. There's usually 2 or 3 fiddles, a couple of mandolins, a guitar or two, a 5 string banjo (if I'm there - I should be - I come up from Doncaster, 35 miles away) and a concertina/melodeon who's good on old time tunes - rare or what?
Its at the corner of Victor Street and Cromwell street, Here's a map. It usually starts about 8.30 pm in the small room straight ahead of you as you come through the pub door, and goes on till the pub shuts about 11.00pm.

The guys would be well pleased to see you, and make you welcome.

If you tell me you're coming, I'll make a point of being there.

Cheers
Ray

..BAnjo RAy Hello . I hope I can work this one in .. I live for Old time playing My work in my early pottery aprenticships in North CArolina put me in the path of RAlph Rindzlers work to bring the southern old time musians to the Newport folk festivals (Clarence Tom Ashley Doc Watson and Bill Monrow for a start) and later to the Smithsonian.. I came back to New England and found a great Square dance fiddler to follow around for a decade. Dose Davis Oakley ever get up to that gathering??? I had a blast playing with him at Beverly last year.. Also i sat in on the Ripon Morris Men's pratice at the Pub one up from the One Eyed Rat in Ripon.. THat was a great night.. Guy -

If you can fit it in, be sure to get to Whitby, in the Northeast Coast of Yorkshire. Whitby is a magical place - beautiful, friendly, a hub of traditional singing. Lots of 'Catters in the surrounding area, breathtaking vistas of the sea. The nearby village of Staithes is another gem. I don't know what goes on musically, if anything, in Staithes, but it's a very distinctive and beautiful old fishing village, set between cliffs. The Yorkshirecats can tell you more.

Hi, Guy, No, the pub doesn't rent rooms - how many of you and do you want 5-star stuff, or just bed & breakfast? If the latter, there's plenty of stuff in town about a mile away. Let me know your preferred price range and I'll get some choices for you. I'd put you up at our place but we only have a very small house with 2 single bedrooms. Roger

Greycap Hello. THere is a great pub with a big hotel above we stayed at 3 years ago in Harrogate.I think it was more then half way down the Straie(SP?) . I remenber there were alot of antiques hanging around the room .. God that sounds like half the pubs in Harragate, Sorry.. We parked to car behind the hotel and I remember the parking took some real skill ( Non American in nature) . ANyway I'm sure we can find something in Harogate.. Thanks for the help at any rate!!!,BR.
Chanteyranger thanks for the heads up on Witby.. It might be a good spot to sleep at on the night before hitting Durham for the Church Service my partner wants to get to.. I havent looked at a map .. I will do so now!

Rick its great to hear from you.. Yes I would love to sit down with you and play and play.. I still think a gathering of continental north Americans at Witby would be a blast.. August is a slow time for a flowerpot maker and I realy want to get to that party of music..
THanks to all here Guy

Guy - Swinton is about 5 miles west of Manchester. Handy for the city centre and for the motorway and, of course, the White Lion! Are you more a musician or singer though? If the former Pied Pipers new Monday session in central Manchester may be of interest as well.

Either way we can probably accomodate you or at least find a reasonable hotel near us. My only reservation would be that I may be in London:-( I should know soon anyway.

Cheers

I hope there's some way you can get your hands on a banjo when you meet up with Roger Knowles, Guy!

I'll aim to catch up with you at the Knox Arms, Harrogate. If it has to be the Sunday, have you decided yet between the Black Lion (Skelton) and the Golden Globe (York)?

Hello Greycap.. I think the Coach and Horses was the one but who knows.. The old grey cells are not so grey anymore.. I'm shore we can find something easily enough..

Hello Fion Unless we are lost in pottery land in the south I can think of nothing that will get in the way of the Knox Arms on the 19th Happoning... Sunday is complicated because my friends Dad was a Episcapal Preast and came from Durham and I know Peter wants to go to sunday morning Church at his grandad's church..Afterwards I may get him to come south again.. Then monday morning we are at BArdon mill Northumbria and Penrith Cumbria before heading down to Manchester and Music. Sunday is very up in the air.. From Durham how long would it take ot get to York or is anything happoning at Nellies the 20th.. ????? I would love to hit the sesion in York!

Ok Ok I have an answer.. I'm just going to have to take ten days off and just go sesion hopping. After the last visit I realy wanted to do this but as before everyones friendship here just floors me. Erica ,my wife has already told me to just go for it.. Is'nt that great of her..? Anyway more soon.. I have to talk to my traveling partner to figure out SUnday.. Thankfully he loves all kinds of folk music.. I just hit him with a cd of THe High level Ranters and the first Waterson 's cd with Martin Carthy just joined..

   Thanks to all here, Guy

Go into Ripon first before 9.0 and watch the strange custom of the Wakeman blowing the horn

2 The Rugby Club Guisborough
Guisborough is 40 miles south of Durham 30 miles north of Ripon
Ray Thom and Len Wilson are guesting
Len is a banjo player

Hi Guy - it would take an hour and a half (max 2 hours) to get from Durham to York down the A1. Turn on to the A59 into York, and keep going till you meet a T junction. Turn left, then get into the right hand lane when you can. When you see an old Gate in the City wall ahead of you, turn right at the traffic light into Nunnery Lane. The next left after 2 or 3 hundred yards will take you past the Golden Ball. It's on your right at the end of the road you're on.

Cheers

Guy, Fionn,
Directions to the Knox Arms in Harrogate as follows:
Go to the Dragon Hotel on Skipton Road (it's well-known )
Turn down Bilton Lane
After 100 yards turn left down Crab Lane
Follow Crab Lane for maybe a third of a mile, the road goes to the right down a hill.
Just as the road turns, there is a small road going straight on down a hill ( Knox Lane ).
Follow that - the Knox Arms is 100 yards on your right.
The folk club room is outside the pub, up some stairs.
I'll be there from about 2000hrs. We kick off about 2040hrs.
See you there,
Roger

Dear Rodger , Tony and everyone at the Knox Arms thanks for a wonderful evening of great music and friendship.Rosie Clegg traded cd's with me and I have been enjoying her music very much and am glad to have her as a reminder of our loveley evening.. I am just back so have not gotten to listen to my TWO new cd's enough to say very much. I have listened to both a few times and loved them...

I found Mr David Oackley's CD waiting for me when I got home.. It is very clear that these three musicians realy like each other and the music they are making.THey are called CARA. It feels as if they listen to each other on alot of levels. I loved the pace of " Asleep Behind the Settee"! David I will leave this cd on my work cd player this week and realey say something about my faverite tunes.. I loved #1LOugh Derg Jig and #3 Standing In The Rath , right from the begining..

I hope everyone gets a chance to hear both these cd's.. In fact I wish there was a list of everyone from the Yorkshire get togethers who have cd's for sale.. .. Ahh a new tthread...

THanks to everyone.. I missed Sunday as I thought.. Met a wonderfull old couple who were friends of My partner Peter's grand parents in Witburn ,Nr South Sheilds though . Very funny people and Monday missed the Manchester group due to our plane leaving at 6:00 am tuesday for Porto Portugal. <><><><><><><>< I never saw a bowl of 6" sardines eaten whole before.Great people and fantastic potters .. best to all here..
