My Daughter just came home from two years in Germany. She is a Sgt. in the US Army Intelligence Corps. Married a nice young man and was settling into life in America. All she would tell me is that she could not say where she was gong and that she "is a little bit scared." Keep her in your thoughts - I'd really like to have her back in one piece

All I can say is that I had friends in Intelligence in Viet Nam. My friends, at least, were never exposed to fire or capture. I hope with you that things are still the same.

Steve, my daughter turned 16 yesterday and will definitely never be a sergeant in anyone's army. But I completely empathize with your desire to have yours back safely, and soon.

My daughter, for different reasons, also can't tell me where she's going! None of our children can, really. Sorry, it's not the same thing, I do know where she'll be next month.

I'm little bit scared for all of them, as I'm sure you are too. Let's just hope we've done our best by them--not a lot else we can do is there? Take care.

One day a Colonel, a Lieutenant and a Warrant Officer were hiking and unexpectedly came upon a large, raging, violent river. They needed to get to the other side, but had no idea of how to do so.

The Warrant Officer called out to God, praying, "Please God, give me the strength to cross this river." Poof! God gave him big arms and strong legs, and he was able to swim across the river. It did, however, take him about two hours, and he almost drowned a couple of times.

Seeing this, the Lieutenant prayed to God, saying, "Please God, give me the strength and the tools to cross this river." Poof! God gave him a rowboat. He was able to row across the river in about an hour, but it was rough, and he almost capsized the boat a couple of times.

The Colonel had seen how things worked out for the other two, so when he prayed to God, he said, "Please God, give me the strength, the tools, and the intelligence to cross this river." And poof! God turned him into an NCO. He looked at the map, hiked upstream a couple of hundred yards, and then walked across the bridge.


My prayers are with your daughter, Sir, for her safe return home; and with the sons and daughters of all, who must face the present dangers.

Steve, both of you have my very best thoughts. I know how hard this must be for you. Knowing some history of both you and your kids, they have formed their own lives from what was obviously s good job of parenting. Unlike Jed and Doug, my definition of "success" may differ just a bit. For many of us, and I suspect yourself included, the definition of success is the same as it was during VietNam.....Coming home alive. You will both be in my thoughts til she returns safely.

I think that as I read your posts, and struggle with the tears and fear, I can but think of the battles already fought. And how a group of folks that, for the most part, I've never met are showing such caring. It doesn't ease the fear I'm feeling for her safety but it is giving me a place to attempt to express how inept I feel about coping with this. I'm not the only guy with a son or daughter being sent to far off places that carries with it the inherent risks of danger and loss.

But this is the first time in my life, since I risked my own life, that I have really been torn apart by my beliefs about war, my loyalty to trying with all of my being to prevent war, and in the same breath trying to give my Daughter support and courage for what she may face. I'm babbling and not making a lot of sense I fear. But I just wanted to reiterate my "Thanks" to all of you for your caring.

Put your faith in your child's ability,which I'm sure you do, she is doing her job and as a professional she will do it well. The fact that my family had faith in my abilities as a soldier gave me the strength to do my job.

My prayers are with you and with your daughter. I have a pretty good idea how you feel. My younger daughter was in the U.S. Army. She had been stationed in Saudi Arabia for two years, had just made her points and had been rotated home roughly two weeks before the Gulf War broke out.

Genie and I will hold your daughter in the light, and daughters and sons in Iraq, Afganistan, England, and with God's help parents will stop sending their children into madness. I understand your being torn, and know none of us can know your uneasyness and concern. But, all of us will be welcomong people back, and someday, God will back forever. I was sitting in a railway station last Saturday, on my way to a meeting of the Peace Committee of the New York Yearly Meeting of the Society of Friends. A young fellow, late teens maybe, was bragging to a group of his friends, boys and girls, that he was going to go to war first then become a bounty hunter. He then began a story that he jumped over a fence and landed on in the middle breaking it appart with a delicate part of his anatomy.
I excused myself and told him that I had been a photgrapher in the occupied counties of Ireland during the seventies. I said, most people I know, including my self, who have seen war, and combat, well, it is a bit like jumping over the fence. It seems a better idea before you do it. It seems a good idea until you land. What ever happens you are not the same person after war.
But, you daughter has a godd and caring father, and whatever she sees or does, I know she will have a good moral shoulder to lean on. Let us not forget, it was not the young people who made peace in Viet Nam, or the Press, or marching people, it was the parents of this nation.

I posted her last e-mail in the pissing contest thread about UN resolutions. She has survived Iraqi artilery and four rocket attacks. She has kept her troops tuned up and alive. My last best guess is that she will finish up in another day or two at the Northern camp and then return to the Kuwait Main Area.

If you are at all curious she is a Sgt. E-5 in the US Army and serves in the intelligence corps. She has already received an award from her commander for her good work and may be making SSgt. E-6 meritoriously.

If anyone has questions about her I'll do my best - but as my friend LH found out I am a bit touchy about how folks refer to her and those with whom she serves. I really don't care how you feel about the war. I fought for you to have that right and am proud that you enjoy it and use it.

Prayers out for all of those in harm's way -

Steve, Intelligence & Special Ops always seem scary, however, I want to let you know that I have been praying since early January for soldiers (female as well as male) whom I know are in those ranks. They are often not in the hotest spots, but working nearby in safety. When I found out early this year that my youngest cousin was out of touch with family, I immediately knew where she was, as I had dreamed of it (God, I hate when that happens!). She is very good at what she does, and has wrangled in & out of lots of places & situations without a scratch. She never had to tell me, I know how important her job is and why she does it. I am certain that we will hear from my cousin in a week or two when some of the dust settles. I will include you and your daughter & family in my prayers. We must keep faith that our loved ones are safe. They are some of the most important personnel in all of our services, and are very well trained and have terrific back-up support.   Let us know how you are doing, & also when you hear from her! You are not alone!

Steve, my dad was in M.I. for almost all of his career and often he could not tell us where he was or what he was doing. I remember the stress that caused my mother and my siblings and myself. You are both in my prayers and thoughts.

Steve, there's a good chance I spent a few weeks in that "Kuwait Main Area" although nobody was shooting at me. When it's over, she'll be able to tell you where she was. It doesn't help NOW though.

I used to look up at the moon - it always seemed to be a quarter moon there - and think it was the same moon as back home. I watched the transport planes come in from my home base in the US, talk to the crews, and I though of them as some sort of silver tether to home. My best wishes to you and her. I hope she comes home safely - as a SSgt.

Just heard from my cousin and his wife, who have been working in Abu Daubi. I figured they were probably okay, but it's good to get the confirmation. They feel pretty safe and plan to stay until his contract is up in June.
