Down The Road    Mary McCaslin

- Instrumental verse -
(E) Sun is rising (C#m)high, (A) burning into the (E)day,
I will say good(C#m)bye, (A) I'll be going a(E)way,
Brush away my (E/D)doubts what tomorrow will (A/C#)ho(A)ld,
Feeling fine for (C#m)now, (A) going down the (E)road.

To a city to (C#m)sing (A) about the trees and the (E)wind,
About the hills in the (C#m)spring, (A) and the rivers that (E)bend,
The rocky deep (E)pass (E/D)and the poppies and (A/C#)po(A)sies,
Running through the (C#m)grass, (A) up and down the (E)road.

Do do do do (C#m)doo, (A) do-dn dodo do (E)doo,
Do do do do (C#m)doo, (A) do-dn dodo do (E)doo.
Do dodo dodo do-dn (E/D)doo, do dodo dodo do (A/C#)do-(A)doo,
Do do do do (C#m)doo, (A) do-dn dodo do (E)doo.

In the dark they (C#m)sit (A) and they holler for (E)more,
White smoke in a (C#m)wisp (A) from here to the (E)door,
Their admission they (E/D)pay for the stories they're (A/C#)to(A)ld
Of a clear new (C#m)day, (A) hold me down on the (E)road.

So heavy rain at my (C#m)back, (A) lazy meadows a(E)head,
In my book I keep (C#m)track (A) of the promises (E)said.
For my songs in a (E/D)town that tomorrow will (A/C#)ho(A)ld,
Feelin' fine for (C#m)now, (A) I'm going down the (E)road.

The sun is rising (C#m)high, (A) burning into the (E)day,
So I will say good(C#m)bye, (A) I'll be going a(E)way,
I'll brush away my (E/D)doubts what tomorrow will (A/C#)ho(A)ld,
I'm feeling fine for (C#m)now, (A) going down the (E)road,
I'm feeling fine for (C#m)now, (A) going down the (E)road,
I'm feeling fine for (C#m)now, (A) going down the (E)road.

X was, or course correct, about the Flatt & Scruggs version of "down the road"...there are lots of songs with the same name, but using their chord sequence doesn't do anything to simply finding them...thanks X

I could probably figure 'em out... I know Pharasee is capoed 4th or 5th out of a G position... at least that's how Garnet taught me to do it...

The others, well, I'd have to dust off the CD and check 'em out...

It's not a CD that get's much play around here....

Hey, thanks guys, those chords are not too bad. I don't suppose you know the chords to any of the other songs on that same cd? Such as 'Pharisee', 'Take it from Day to Day', 'Straight and True'

Paul...

One can also fingerpick, or pick the "sort of" melody along the D string using the chords I suggested...

Good song... ta fer reminding me about it.. haven't played it out in quite some time...

It's one of the best tracks on "From Coffee House to Cashing In"...

Hey "Bluegrasser,"

I read the other posts above mine. I knew it was a diffrent tune and so did the person who posted the request for the chords. A little tomfoolery never hurt anyone. The diffrents is so obvious I guess the jokes on you.

(G) I'll be going (D) away

Brush away my (D) doubts
(*) What tomorrow will (G)ho-(D)-old
Feeling fine for (Bm) now
(G) going down the (D) road...

(*) I don't know what this chord is but it's (from the capo) 030230

A real Banjoest would know that "Down the Road," done by Flatt & Scruggs (Down the road, down the road, I've got a good girl down the road) is not the same song as Mary McCaslin's "Down the Road" undr discussion.

DOWN THE ROAD
(Mary McCaslin)

Sun is rising high, burning into the day,
I will say goodbye, I'll be going away,
Brush away my doubts, what tomorrow will hold,
Feeling fine for now, going down the road...

To a city to sing, about the trees and the wind,
'Bout the hills in spring, and the rivers that bend,
The rocky deep pass, and the poppies and ponies,
Running through the grass, up and down the road...

In the dark they sit and they hollar for more,
White smoke in a wisp, from here to the door,
Their admission they paid, for the stories they're told,
Of a clear new day, hold me down on the road...

So heavy rain at my back, lazy meadows ahead,
In my book I keep track, of the promises said.

For my songs in a town, that tomorrow will hold
Feelin' better for now, facin' down the road.

(The song -- "Down the Road" -- is on Mary's album WAY OUT WEST (Philo 1011) released in 1973.)

Stan Rogers did a version of Down the Road which is on his From Concert to Coffee House CD, does anyone know the chords he's playing, or does anyone have their own version of this song? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
