Subject: Starting the thread: Advent Candle Songs From: Haruo Date: 16 Nov 02 - 06:40 PM Advent candle songs One of my favorite recent Advent songs is Mary Anne Parrott's "One Candle Is Lit", sung to the tune "Cradle Song" by William J. Kirkpatrick (this is also one of the best-established tunes for "Away in a manger", for which I perversely persist in preferring "Mueller"). This got me to thinking about songs related to the widespread custom of Advent candles, so I thought I would share what I have in that line and invite others to share theirs. Haruo |

Subject: Lyr/Tune Add: A THOUSAND CANDLES From: Haruo Date: 16 Nov 02 - 09:36 PM This one is not an Advent-candle song, but merely a Christmas song that mentions candles. Still, I'd be interested in seeing the Swedish source (or at least having the original title): A THOUSAND CANDLES Swedish carol, tr., Evie Karlsson, tr. © 1977 Word Music (from The Hymnal for Worship & Celebrations, no. 159)

Haruo PS: I have one more I was going to add, a German song Wir sagen euch an den lieben Advent, which I only have in Esperanto (would like to see German, and English if it exists) but I see I left the MID2TXT file at home. Alas, Smyrna (as they say in Yiddish). |
Subject: Lyr Add: WIR SAGEN EUCH AN DEN LIEBEN ADVENT From: Haruo Date: 16 Nov 02 - 09:50 PM Here it is after all; I just had to download another (more modern) copy of MIDITEXT here at the church, was all. WIR SAGEN EUCH AN DEN LIEBEN ADVENT
MIDI file: wirsagen.mid Timebase: 192 Name: Wir sagen euch an den lieben Advent This program is worth the effort of learning it. To download the latest version of MIDItext and get instructions on how to use it click here ABC format: X:1 A singable English version would be welcome, as would the original German text. I like the tune, though. Haruo |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Advent Candle songs From: mg Date: 16 Nov 02 - 11:17 PM No offense to anyone who likes it, but to my mind the dreariest song just about in the world is Oh come oh come Emanual...it hurts my ears to remember it even...well, for those who don't know it is sung when lighting the Advent wreath, which is otherwise a beautiful custom. There are some specifically Advent songs..Drop ye dew oh gracious heavens let the clouds rain down the just..that is a nice one..mg |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Advent Candle songs From: black walnut Date: 17 Nov 02 - 08:56 PM Oh I love "O Come O Come Emmanuel"! (If it's not done to slowly). A few years ago, we used to do a simple one that went something like "Light one candle for peace, one bright candle for peace, He brings peace to every heart, He comes, He comes, He comes". Insert other words for the other weeks, of course....peace, hope, joy, love. I don't know who wrote it, but it was simple enough to do at home around the dining room table, without a hymnal. ~b.w. |
