Advent candle songs

One of my favorite recent Advent songs is Mary Anne Parrott's "One Candle Is Lit", sung to the tune "Cradle Song" by William J. Kirkpatrick (this is also one of the best-established tunes for "Away in a manger", for which I perversely persist in preferring "Mueller").

This got me to thinking about songs related to the widespread custom of Advent candles, so I thought I would share what I have in that line and invite others to share theirs.

ONE CANDLE IS LIT ("Come surely, Lord Jesus")

Mary Anne Parrott, 1988, © 1995 Chalice Press
(from Chalice Hymnal, no. 128)
  1. Come surely, Lord Jesus, as dawn follows night,
our hearts long to greet you, as roses, the light.
Salvation, draw near us, our vision engage.
One candle is lit for the hope of the age.
  2. Come quickly, shalom, teach us how to prepare
for a gift that compels us with justice to care.
Our spirits are restless till sin and war cease.
One candle is lit for the reign of God's peace.
  3. Come, festively sing while awaiting the birth,
join angels in dancing from heaven to earth.
Wave banners of good news, lift high thankful praise.
One candle is lit for the joy of these days.
  4. Come, wander where lion and lamb gently play,
where evil is banished and faith takes the day,
a babe in a manger to fool the world's eyes.
One candle is lit for God's loving surprise.
  5. Come, listen, the sounds of God-with-us ring clear,
and signs of a cross in the distance appear.
The Word once made flesh, yet the Word ever near.
One candle is lit for the Christ-birthday here.

LIGHT ONE CANDLE TO WATCH FOR THE MESSIAH

Wayne L. Wold, b. 1954, © 1984 Fortress Press
(from With One Voice, no. 630)
  1. Light one candle to watch for Messiah: let the light banish darkness.
He shall bring salvation to Israel, God fulfills the promise.
  2. Light two candles to watch for Messiah: let the light banish darkness.
He shall feed the flock like a shepherd, gently lead them homeward.
  3. Light three candles to watch for Messiah: let the light banish darkness.
Lift your heads and lift high the gateway for the King of glory.
  4. Light four candles to watch for Messiah: let the light banish darkness.
He is coming, tell the glad tidings. Let your light be shining.

Subject: Lyr/Tune Add: A THOUSAND CANDLES
From: Haruo
Date: 16 Nov 02 - 09:36 PM

This one is not an Advent-candle song, but merely a Christmas song that mentions candles. Still, I'd be interested in seeing the Swedish source (or at least having the original title):

A THOUSAND CANDLES

Swedish carol, tr., Evie Karlsson, tr. © 1977 Word Music
(from The Hymnal for Worship & Celebrations, no. 159)
  1. We light a thousand candles bright
    around the earth today,
and all the beams will shine across
    the heavens' grand display.
  2. Yes over land and sea tonight
    the joyful message brings
the birth of Him, our Lord and Christ,
    our Savior and our King.
  3. Dear brightest star o'er Bethlehem,
    oh let your precious light
shine in with hope and peace toward men
    in every home tonight.
  4. In all our houses cold and dark
    please send your warmth sublime,
the warmth that comes from Jesus' love
    this blessed Christmas time.

Haruo PS: I have one more I was going to add, a German song Wir sagen euch an den lieben Advent, which I only have in Esperanto (would like to see German, and English if it exists) but I see I left the MID2TXT file at home. Alas, Smyrna (as they say in Yiddish).

From: Haruo

Here it is after all; I just had to download another (more modern) copy of MIDITEXT here at the church, was all.

WIR SAGEN EUCH AN DEN LIEBEN ADVENT

Maria Ferschl, 1954, © Christophorus-Verlag, Freiburg
(I only have it in Esperanto, from Adoru, no. 195; trans. Sr. Edith Biberstein OSB, 1986)

  1. Nun estas advento, kantu pri ĝi.
    Unu kandelon vidas vi.
    Prikantu ni sanktan tempon en ĥor';
faru nun vojon por la Sinjor'.
Ĝoju, kristanoj. Ĝojon por vi! Dio estas ĉe ni.
Now it is Advent, sing about it. One candle you see.
Let's sing of a holy time, in a choir; make now a way for the Lord.
Rejoice, Christians. Joy for you! God is with us.
  2. Nun estas advento, kantu pri ĝi.
    Duan kandelon vidas vi.
    Mizerajn gefratojn helpu kun am',
    kiel Jesuo faris jam.
Ĝoju, kristanoj. Ĝojon por vi! Dio estas ĉe ni.
Now it is Advent, sing about it. A second candle you see.
With love help your sisters and brothers in misery, as Jesus has already done.
Rejoice, Christians. Joy for you! God is with us.
  3. Nun estas advento, kantu pri ĝi.
    Trian kandelon vidas vi.
    Heligu la mondon per via bonec';
    vivu volonte laŭ Dia spec'.
Ĝoju, kristanoj. Ĝojon por vi! Dio estas ĉe ni.
Now it is Advent, sing about it. A third candle you see.
Brighten the world with your goodness; live willingly according to God's kind.
Rejoice, Christians. Joy for you! God is with us.
  4. Nun estas advento, kantu pri ĝi.
    Kvaran kandelon vidas vi.
    Jesuo sin montros mem al la mond';
brilu vi, koroj en la rond'.
Ĝoju, kristanoj. Ĝojon por vi! Dio estas ĉe ni.
Now it is Advent, sing about it. A fourth candle you see.
Jesus will show himself to the world; shine forth, hearts in the circle.
Rejoice, Christians. Joy for you! God is with us.

A singable English version would be welcome, as would the original German text. I like the tune, though.

No offense to anyone who likes it, but to my mind the dreariest song just about in the world is Oh come oh come Emanual...it hurts my ears to remember it even...well, for those who don't know it is sung when lighting the Advent wreath, which is otherwise a beautiful custom.

There are some specifically Advent songs..Drop ye dew oh gracious heavens let the clouds rain down the just..that is a nice one..mg

Oh I love "O Come O Come Emmanuel"! (If it's not done to slowly). A few years ago, we used to do a simple one that went something like "Light one candle for peace, one bright candle for peace, He brings peace to every heart, He comes, He comes, He comes". Insert other words for the other weeks, of course....peace, hope, joy, love. I don't know who wrote it, but it was simple enough to do at home around the dining room table, without a hymnal.
