Okay, now fir those folks who just stopped by to see what this thread was all about, well, it won't mean a danged thing to you unless you lived within the reach of WABC outta New York City back in the early 60's. The guys name was Jerry Blavitt (sp?) and he was *THE DJ*!!!

Yeah, those were the days when I spent my summers at the Jersey shores and "The Geeter" was *THE MAN*!

Anyone else remember the guy? Any stories that the Getter brings back?

Bobert

New York?   NEW YORK? Dont make me laugh. The Geeter with the Heater, who was also called "The Boss with the Sauce" was as Philly as a cheese steak. Jerry was one of the original teens on Bandstand even before Dick Clark became the host. (Back in those days, Bob Horn was the man.) Some of Jerry's fellow dancers in that cold building next to the Arena on Market Street were Tom DiNoble, Dutch Cramer and me. Jerry was a South Philly kid. His connection with the local Mafia was as much a product of his family and friends (I think his mom was Italian) as it was a perc of celebrity.

I lived in New York City from 1960-64, and never heard the Geeter With The Heater... It was Murray the K, (The self-proclaimed 5th Beatle), Cousin Brucie, Dan Ingraham ... just had the name of another DJ slip through my porous brain... Most of the DJs from that time period are still on WABC.

But, I never even heard of Geeter with the Heater... thought maybe you were referring to Geezer with the Tweezer, Bobert..

Rockin' Jerry

Musicmic is correct, Jerry is a Philly phenomenon. The correct spelling of the name is: Jerry Blavat.

He's still doing the DJ thing at his own radio station (WNJC 1360 AM "Geator Gold"), and he still hosts "record hop" club appearances in Pennsylvania and New Jersey (the Philly area to the Atlantic City area, including a nightclub he owns in Margate NJ). You can even hear his radio show on-line.    Check out the details at his radio station's website: http://www.geatorgold.net

BTW, according to his site, the correct spelling of the nickname is "The Geator with the Heator".

Bobert's confusion about the New York station may stem from the fact that Blavat's TV show, "The Discophonic Scene", was eventually syndicated, so it may well have run in New York. More details about Jerry Blavat's radio and TV history on the "Dossier" page at the website I linked to.

Interestingly, a Google search for the nickname with the spelling "Geeter with the Heater" turns up a couple of UK DJ's: Rosko and Larry Tremaine. Tremaine is also referred to as the "Boss with the Hot Sauce". Curious! I wonder which DJ came first??
