Subject: RE: Are there 2 mc chats? From: Liz the Squeak Date: 05 Dec 02 - 02:31 AM It depends on which server you log on with... I learned how to do this a couple of nights ago... there were 7 people in the chat room, logged on with Shorty, and 3 of the same people in the chat logged on with the www. default because when the majority of people initially logged on, the default was not working. Later it got better so we just opened up another page and logged on with that as well. It gets quite confusing if you habitually use a server other than www. default or if it is down and you get diverted to one of the others. LTS |

Subject: RE: Are there 2 mc chats? From: Nemesis Date: 05 Dec 02 - 04:52 AM I'm still confused .. I get onto the Internet via AOL and via URL www.mudcat.org/discussion forum to here and then clicked thru the Quick LInks dialogue box at the top .. is there way of going directly via an URL to the Mudchat site? Is that the two pages? |

Subject: RE: Are there 2 mc chats? From: Jerry Rasmussen Date: 05 Dec 02 - 05:12 AM I'm with you, Hille: I was in yesterday and three Catters were in the other room. I figured they wanted to be left alone and were talking about Brit stuff. I went to the "Change Room" slot and clicked that, and nothing happened. They figured out how to come over into the room I was in, just as I was leaving. One of them was in the room I came into, and the other room, and told the others to come over. I'll have to go back and read the other thread. Maybe that explains why there are times when I go on, there's someone in the room, and they don't respond. I figure theyve just gone in the kitchen to make a spot of tea, or a drink and aren't watching the screen. Maybe they're in another cyber room. I hope someone explains it better on the other thread... for thick-heads like me. Gonna go read it.. Jerry |

Subject: RE: Are there 2 mc chats? From: Bassic Date: 05 Dec 02 - 05:31 AM Hille, my understanding is that there are currently 2 servers supporting Mudcat. The main (default) one is the www.mudcat.org address that you are using. There is a second (smaller) server which supports almost all of mudcat apart, it seems, from a few of the extra bits, presumably to save space. This one is accessed by the address shorty.mudcat.org and is intended to be used when the www. server is down. The mudchat facility apparently uses alot of space on the servers hence the the need to use the www. (larger) server whenever possible. As far as I am aware the Mudchat rooms are the only facility common to both servers that do not show up as the same on both. This, in fact, creates 2 separate Chat facilities though we should only be using one at a time. Sorry if the technical stuff is a bit inacurate but the principals are sound I think. |

Subject: RE: Are there 2 mc chats? From: Jerry Rasmussen Date: 05 Dec 02 - 05:39 AM To complicate matters, Bassic... I get a message that there is no server with the address shorty.mudcat.org. Jerry |

Subject: RE: Are there 2 mc chats? From: Bassic Date: 05 Dec 02 - 05:46 AM Just logged on to the forum using this address which I have coppied from my address bar http://shorty.mudcat.org/threads.cfm Entry to the shorty chat room is then via usual "quick links" Like I said, dont trust the tec bits that I have attempted to describe but the principal is sound, as I understand it, good luck! |

Subject: RE: Are there 2 mc chats? From: Nemesis Date: 05 Dec 02 - 07:26 AM Um, I think I get it (probably not ) .. but http://www.mudcat.org - which is the server we should mostly use - has a mudchat http://shorty.mudcat.org - is more of a back up server - that has a chat room facility too and it can be different to the one above? Don't get exasperated .. I'm not stupid ..altho' I think I am coming down with Alzheimer's (cough .. cough .. gasp .. so much for stopping smoking :)! |

Subject: RE: Are there 2 mc chats? From: GUEST Date: 05 Dec 02 - 07:59 AM I can't give a difinitive answer but I have just looked up cfchat. It says it is a "databaseless" system that runs in ColdFusion memory. I would guess it uses "sessions" to keep track of users and that the 2 instances of the program, one running on shorty and one on www would be completely independant. Or in more simple terms, yes, I think you would have 2 mc chats. |

Subject: RE: Are there 2 mc chats? From: Mr Happy Date: 05 Dec 02 - 08:47 AM how's it possible 2 communicate one to the other? |

Subject: RE: Are there 2 mc chats? From: GUEST Date: 05 Dec 02 - 09:07 AM That surprises me Mr Happy. I haven't seen the source code though and my understanding of sessions, if that is what is used, is poor. Assuming it is not the same link pointed to from both servers, both chats by my way of thinking will be separate processes. I'd guess session or otherwise, we are looking at a cookie, perhaps both servers do read the same cookie. Or perhaps my ideas are just wrong. I'd not looked at this type of chat until recently and am still learning... They look good in terms of compatibility as there is no dependance on things like Java Applets but they seem to involve a lot of browser refreshes and I'd guess work for the http server. |
