Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Dinnae throw yir grannie off a bus ... From: dick greenhaus Date: 28 Dec 02 - 11:20 AM I think you're mixing two songs here. The first, "YE CANNA SHOVE YER GRANNY" is in the DT, sung to the tune of "Comin' Round the Mountain". The second, which I sang as a kid on the streets of Brooklyn, is a parody of "My Bonny Lies Over the Ocean", and is sung to that tune.A second verse was: My Bonny had tu-berc-u-lo-sis My Bonny is missing one lung My Bonny can cough up an oyster And rollit around on her tongue. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Dinnae throw yir grannie off a bus ... From: Genie Date: 28 Dec 02 - 11:14 PM As sung by Robin Hall and Jimmie MacGregor, "Ye Canna Shove Yer Granny" goes like this: Oh, ye canny shove yer granny off a bus, Oh, ye canny shove yer granny off a bus, Oh, ye canny shove yer granny, Fer she's yer maither's mammy, Oh, ye canny shove yer granny off a bus, But, Ye can shove yer aither granny off a bus, Ye can shove yer aither granny off a bus, Ye can shove yer aither granny, Fer she's yer faither's mammy, Ye can shove yer aither granny off a bus! |
Subject: Lyr Add: YE CANNY KICK AROUND HERE From: Cluin Date: 29 Dec 02 - 02:44 AM Oh, now Annie shoved her Granny off the bus, Yes, oor Annie shoved her Granny off the bus, Now when Annie shoved her Granny, We all thought it uncanny, But Annie shoved her granny off the bus! Naw, we just sing the first verse. Then we follow it with (different tune but they go together well): YE CANNY KICK AROUND HERE When I was just a laddie, I went and asked my Ma If I could hae a tanner, tae buy a tanner ba' The tanner ba' she gave me, and I went out tae play But everywhere I took it, I heard the Polis say... (oh well) Ye canny kick around here; no, ye canny kick around here Ye canny kick around here; no, ye canny kick around here Ye canny, canny, canny, ye couldna kick your granny Ye canny, canny, canny, ye canny kick around here Well, I played for the Rovers, and I felt very proud When I rushed up the centre, ye should hae heard the crowd I'd take a shot on goal and ye'd hear them roar and cheer But when the ba' went past the post, this is whay ye'd hear... (they'd yell) CHORUS Now my fitba' days are over, and I will play nae mair I had tae see a doctor, because my leg was sair He tried some embrocation, and gied ma leg a rub But then he said "You'd better go and buy yourself a pub" (because) CHORUS Then end by going back to "Kick yer Granny" |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Dinnae throw yir grannie off a bus ... From: Robin Date: 29 Dec 02 - 05:12 AM Thanks, everyone. And yes, I was tangling up two separate songs. i think as i remember it now, the gas quatrain ran: Ma grannie went doon tae the celler A leak in the gaspipe tae see She lighted a match fur tae aid her -- Oh bring back ma grannie tae me. I seem to remember a jeely piece chucked out the tenement window joke from a Citizens'pantomime in the sixties. Robin |
