Subject: Lyr/Tune Req: There's Somebody Waiting For You From: Áine Date: 02 Jan 03 - 05:52 PM This song was sung to me by Dear Hubby's father, who learned it from his grandfather; so, I'm guessing the song is at least post-Civil War, circa 1880's. I can't remember all the words (of course), but the refrain/chorus has the line -- 'Is there someone waiting for me' OR 'will someone be waiting for me', or something to that effect. I'm trying to get in touch with my father-in-law for some more lyrics; but, he lives in the country and was 'gone to town' today. ;-) The storyline is about two sisters, sitting beside a river bank, with one sister lamenting her lack of a lover. While she is singing, a lone horseman rides by and answers her lament, replying 'Yes, there is someone waiting for you' -- who, of course, turns out to be himself. Strike any chords, 'Catters? I know it's not much to go on; but, I'm betting on that Ol' Cat Magic to work once again ;-) All the best, Áine (PS - And it's NOT the song, 'There's Someone Awaiting For Me' sung by the Carter Family - already checked out that angle) |
Subject: Lyr/Tune Req: There's Somebody Waiting For You From: Áine Date: 02 Jan 03 - 06:11 PM Great! My father-in-law just called me back; so, here are the lyrics that he remembers: In a cool shady nook By the side of a brook Two maidens sat fishing for fun They talked as they fished While the younger girl wished For a sweetheart she had never known The elder girl said With a toss of her head 'Cheer up, there's no cause to be blue, 'Your love you've not met, 'Will come to you yet, 'There's somebody waiting for you.' Refrain: Somewhere someone is waiting for you Sometime someone will love you That you'll love true Somewhere someone is waiting for you And a lad passed them by Heard the maiden's reply And he stopped and he chatted for fun He said, 'Yes it is true Someone's waiting for you And I wish you thought I was the one.' He paused for a while Then he said with a smile, 'Cheer up, there's no cause to be blue, 'Your love you've not met, 'Will come to you yet, 'There's somebody waiting for you.' Now, Dear Hubby's daddy says that there are more verses . . . Is this ringing any bells for anyone? All the best, Áine |

Now all I need is the guitar chords and maybe a soundfile (hey, couldn't let y'all off the hook THAT easy, now could I?) *BG* SOMEWHERE, SOMEBODY'S WAITING FOR YOU (Words by Vincent Bryan, Music by Al Gumble 1906, adapted and arranged by Joel Mabus) In a cool shady nook, by the side of a brook Two maidens were fishing one day They talked as they fished, and the younger girl wished A sweetheart would soon come her way The other girl said, with a toss of her head Cheer up - you've no need to be blue Patience, my pet - your time is not yet There is somebody waiting for you Somewhere, somebody's waiting for you, you, you. Somewhere, somebody's waiting whose smile is true And someday, you'll find somebody who loves you too Somewhere, somebody's waiting for you, you, you. Then a boy passing by heard the maiden's reply And he joined in their chat, having fun He said, "If its true someone's waiting for you Then perhaps I am the one!" She paused for a while then said with a smile "You might be the one it is true - But if you are wrong, then you won't worry long For there's somebody waiting for you Somewhere, somebody's waiting for you, you, you. Somewhere, somebody's waiting whose smile is true And someday, you'll find somebody who loves you too Somewhere, somebody's waiting for you, you, you. |

Subject: RE: Lyr/Tune Req: There's Somebody Waiting For You From: George Seto - af221@chebucto.ns.ca Date: 02 Jan 03 - 06:55 PM Even I know the song. It was popularized in Cape Breton by a fellow named Charlie MacKinnon. He sang it on a recording in the 60s or late 50s. Apparently Grandpa Jones sang it and it's on a Camsco 5 CD collection. Subject: Lyr Add: SOMEBODY'S WAITING FOR YOU (Bryan, Gumble From: Jim Dixon Date: 18 Jun 07 - 09:04 PM Here are the original lyrics, from the sheet music at The Lester S. Levy Collection of Sheet Music. Thanks to Malcolm Douglas for the link. I have boldfaced the differences between this and the Joel Mabus version posted above. SOMEBODY'S WAITING FOR YOU Words, Vincent Bryan. Music, Al Gumble. New York: Jerome H. Remick & Co., 1906. In a cool shady nook, by the side of a brook, Two sweet maidens were fishing alone. They talked as they fished, and the younger girl wished For the sweetheart she never had known. The other girl said, with a toss of her head, "Cheer up, dear. There's no cause to be blue. Your love you've not met, but he'll come to you yet, For there's somebody waiting for you." CHORUS: Somewhere, somebody's waiting for you, you, you. Somewhere, somebody's longing whose heart is true. Sometime, you'll love somebody who loves you, too. Somewhere, somebody's waiting for you, you, you. Then a youth passing by heard her sister's reply, And he joined in their chat, half in fun. He said, "It is true: someone's waiting for you, And I wish you thought I was the one!" She paused for a while, and she said with a smile, "I'm not sure, but you may be, it's true; But if you are wrong, why, you won't worry long. For there's somebody waiting for you." CHORUS |

Subject: ADD: There's Somebody Waiting For You From: GUEST,Spedemom Date: 07 Sep 07 - 06:37 PM My mother and grandmother sang this song to us from as far back as I remember (and I'm 56!) The words we sang were more like Aine's version, with a few changes. There's Somebody Waiting for You In a cool shady nook By the side of a brook Two sweet maidens were fishing alone. And the younger girl wished For a sweetheart she never had known Then the older girl said With a toss of her head 'Cheer up, dear, there's no cause to be blue, 'Your love you've not met, 'But, he'll come to you yet, 'For there's somebody waiting for you.' Refrain: Somewhere someone is waiting for you, you, you Somewhere, someone is longing whose heart is true. Sometime, you'll love somebody who'll love you, too. Somewhere someone is waiting for you, you, you. Then a youth passing by Heard the sisters' reply And he joined in their chat, having fun. He said, 'It is true Someone's waiting for you And I wish you thought I was the one.' Then they talked for a while And he said with a smile, "What you say may be right, dear, that's true. But, if you are wrong, You will not worry long, 'For there's somebody waiting for you.' Repeat refrain. |
