Subject: Tech: need an instant spellchecker? From: Bill D Date: 09 Feb 03 - 04:49 PM we have had discussions about spell checkers before, but I just found a new one which may help those who 'forget' copy to the clipboard or don't want to compose in a word processor . Here is some stuff from the page: the underlined part at the bottom is the neat part.... "Copy the word to the clipboard and look at the tinySpell icon. If it is yellow , the word is misspelled, if it is white , the word is spelled correctly. Click the tinySpell icon to pop up a list of suggested replacement words from which you can select a correction. The selected word is copied to the clipboard (so you can paste it in your document), or is inserted into your document, or both (depending on your settings). You may also set tinySpell to check your spelling on the fly while you are typing and alert you whenever it detects a misspelled word. (this means it works ANYTIME you are typing if you have the program open...you can have a little box open and see the last word typed when it 'dings' at you and either ignore it, or get the suggested changes) (It seems to start with US English spellings by default, but, it says "in addition to tinySpell's built-in dictionary you also have access to a private dictionary. Whenever tinySpell detects a misspelled word it allows you to add it to the private dictionary. To add the word to the dictionary click the item Add to dictionary at the bottom of the list of suggested replacement words. As long as the word is in the dictionary it is considered to be correctly spelled. If you want to remove a word from the private dictionary right-click the tinySpell icon ( or ) in the system tray and click the item Clean up dictionary. This opens a window with a list of all the words that are found in the private dictionary. To remove a word, select it and press the Remove button. To close the window press the Close button." so, cultural differences can be corrected as you go..*grin* go here to get it (Windows only , of course) |

Subject: RE: Tech: need an instant spellchecker? From: CarolC Date: 09 Feb 03 - 07:42 PM Sorry Bill. I guess I saw the word "clipboard" and my eyes just sort of glazed over. (They tend to do that.) ;-) |

Subject: RE: Tech: need an instant spellchecker? From: CarolC Date: 09 Feb 03 - 08:03 PM It's not that, Bill. I hate to admit it, but I'm still intimidated by some aspects of this computer technology. I haven't mastered the clipboard thingie yet, and I don't think I'm ready to. I see the word clipboard, and I RUN past it, as fast as I can ;-) |

Subject: RE: Tech: need an instant spellchecker? From: Uncle_DaveO Date: 09 Feb 03 - 09:11 PM If you have WIN 95, 98, and maybe 2000, (but I think not XP, and I don't know about ME) I highly recommend Michael Quinion's free input box spell checker. Once installed on your computer, it's available whenever you're in an input box (such as I'm writing this in). You only need to hit CTRL/Shift and F12, and it checks your whole typed text; no cut and paste, no clipboard. Google it by searching for "Quinion" and "spell check". More's the pity, I'm now on XP Pro, and it doesn't seem to work, so I'm looking for something that will serve the same purpose. Dave Oesterreich |

Subject: RE: Tech: need an instant spellchecker? From: Bill D Date: 09 Feb 03 - 09:38 PM Uncle Dave...that's the one I have been using, and it works 'pretty' well...I have recommended it here several times...but I think this one may be easier, as it does not require you to DO the check..(though you can set it that way)...it just follows your typing and checks the characters entered between spaces (it dinged at me 3 times as I typed this)....I am a pretty good speller, but a BAD typist, and I don't look up at the screen often enough. I wish it colored the word, but the ding helps... |

Subject: RE: Tech: need an instant spellchecker? From: Uncle_DaveO Date: 10 Feb 03 - 08:51 AM Fortunately or unfortunately, I AM a GOOD typist, and generally a good speller, and I find that the word-by-word checker is a pain in the neck for me. Such a checker complains about unusual words that come up, and about most (or at least many) proper nouns. Chacun a son gout, I guess. Dave Oesterreich |

Subject: RE: Tech: need an instant spellchecker? From: Bill D Date: 10 Feb 03 - 09:28 AM "Chacun a son gout"..you do, and you'll clean it up! (as my 'ol Daddy used to say) (I thought I was a clever kid in 8th grade, avoiding typing class and taking shop, and it was never a serious problem until the internet...now I wish I had not been so clever....my real problem is dyslexic typing (my index fingers getting confused about which goes first)....so that 'ding' is just added help...and I still use the Quinion spell checker when I want to proof an entire paragraph) |
