I'm looking for background information and printed sources for "Wild Mountain Thyme" (Braes O' Balquiddher). DT indicates it's composed by Francis McPeake. Where should I begin?

One of the many Francie McPeakes claimed authorship when his family group recorded Wild Mountain Thyme in the '60s. It is based on the Braes of whatever - of which I'll try to list some printed sources if I get a chance

Best wishes

I have 'Braes of Balquiddher' in "Songs of Scotland" edited by George Farquhar Graham in about 1850 ot so...he says it was written by Robet Tannahill, 'a Paisley weaver' 1744-1810...it gives a 'short' bio of Tannahill which claims that he was a well-to-do but morose person who committed suicide.

Hi- The database has both Braes of Balquidder and Wild Mountain Thyme. You can make your own comparisons. There's also a Kipper family parody which you might like.
