Subject: RE: how do u convert midi to wav From: MMario Date: 25 Mar 03 - 04:19 PM record it while playing the midi. see "total recorder" for a program that does that. |

Subject: RE: how do u convert midi to wav From: Ed. Date: 25 Mar 03 - 04:25 PM Well it makes a change from the opposite question *grin* I was going to suggest Total Recorder too, but it depends on your soundcard's capabilities. Mine can't do it, but it's getting on in years. If you've got a reasonably modern PC you should have no problems. Assuming that you are using a PC, of course? |

Subject: RE: how do u convert midi to wav From: Joe Offer Date: 25 Mar 03 - 04:37 PM If it's short, you can use Microsoft Windows Sound Recorder to record any sound that's playing on your computer. Sound Recorder has a one-mainute recording limit. Works quite well. You'll find it under accessories/entertainment/sound recorder on Windows XP, and I think the location in Windows 98 is similar. -Joe Offer- |

Subject: RE: how do u convert midi to wav From: Ed. Date: 25 Mar 03 - 05:05 PM Thread drift, Joe's solution is a good one (you've probably already got the program). Why does 'Sound Recorder' limit the length of recordings to 60 seconds? I can't see any good reason for it, especially in these days of huge hard discs for very little money. |

Subject: RE: how do u convert midi to wav From: nutty Date: 25 Mar 03 - 05:32 PM Sound Recorder only has an initial 60 sec limit. If you click on record again, once the first 60secs are up, it will continue to record ad infinitum. |

Subject: RE: how do u convert midi to wav From: Dave Bryant Date: 27 Mar 03 - 07:00 AM I use WAVmaker from Polyhedric Software. It does'nt go via the soundcard, but uses sampled instrumental patches to render MIDI files directly into WAVs. The quality of the resulting WAV files is superb - better than I can get with my AWE64 soundcard - and no hiss. From what I remember WAVmaker is free to download, but you only get a minimal number of patches. When you register it they send you a complete set of patches. |

Subject: RE: how do u convert midi to wav From: GUEST,Mr Red (who uses Sounblaster Recorder) Date: 27 Mar 03 - 08:14 AM The app that comes with a Sound Blaster card will record from the "combined" input surely. Not at my own machine to check. ATI recorder probably does if you have the All-in-Wonder card. Didn't know Win Record only did a minute I use it to set-up my radio record "input" and "volume" automatically. |

Subject: RE: how do u convert midi to wav From: CET Date: 27 Mar 03 - 08:48 AM Could somebody explain why you would want to convert midi to wav? Does that make the music sound like real music, instead of something played on a toy piano from Zellers (or whatever your local cheap department store happens to be)? CET |

Subject: RE: how do u convert midi to wav From: Dave Bryant Date: 27 Mar 03 - 10:57 AM One reason that I render MIDI files to WAV is when I want to make up karioke-style CDs to use for Music Hall sets etc. Niether Linda or I are pianists, and if I already have a MIDI or can create one with SHARPEYE then it's quite a convenient way to do it. I can even use a variety of instruments - ie a trombone on "Boom-ta-ra-ra". I don't really want to cart a PC (even a notebook) around - (although I can play MIDIs on my PDA ...hmm). Obviously I've got to remember how many "till readys" I've got, and be careful to sing the right number of verses ! The reason that the MIDIs come out so clear with WAVmaker is that the WAV file is created digitally and does not go via an analogue stage. |

Subject: RE: Tech: how do u convert midi to wav From: JohnInKansas Date: 27 Mar 03 - 08:46 PM Mr Red - One of the peculiarities of most of the Soundblaster cards is the "combined" input. You can select any single source for input; but if you want to mix more than one input, your only choice is the "what you hear" selection. You can usually turn off "everything you don't want," but many have wondered (aloud) why they haven't incorporated a better "selective mixer." Not really to the point of anything - just an random observation. John |
