From: Sorcha
Date: 13 Apr 03 - 01:28 AM

Our son was involved is a serious motorcycle crash tonight about 30 miles from home. He looks awful and is spending the night in hosp, but no head injury, no broken bones and no internal injuries.

He has a pretty bad cut over his left eye, small one over right eye and left eyelid is pretty ugly with large hematoma. Can't check vision until he is able to open the eye, etc. but all in all, he is one lucky kid. Somebody was truly "riding bitch" with him as they say in BikerLand. A friend who saw the crash said he thought Luke was dead when they loaded him in the ambulance...........

He will be one stiff and sore boy for a while, but he will be OK. Please do whatever it is you do.............thanks, friends.

Tired Mom

Of course not. Stoopid kid. No helmet law in Wyo. "Live Free or Die" and he damn near did. It will be hours before I can sleep. Too much adrenaline and too much coffee at the hospital. He was only going about 30 MPH, which no doubt is what saved his life. We are hoping this was a Learning Experience..........

Don't doubt it for a minute -- you don't get that close to the edge without learning.

No telling what, though! :>)

Youhave my prayers of thanks that he was cool enough -- or guarded over enough -- to survive whole and apparently well. No concussion?

Sorcha, sorry to hear of Luke's mishap. Praise the Lord the damage was not worse!! You all and Luke especially are in my thoughts and prayers for a speedy recovery with no lingering after effects, except maybe the urge to wear a helmet!! Having been in at least one close call on a motorcycle myself years ago made me appreciate the helmet I had on! Hopefuly he will have a similar awakening! Keep us posted on his progress.

My brother once expressed his desire to ride motorcycles to a neighbor he was doing yard work for. The neighbor, an orthopedic surgeon, told my brother of reconstructing an average of six motorcyclists a year, and how he'd given up his own cycle during medical school after his first such medical encounter. Not everyone can be so lucky to learn the "easy" way. Sounds like the next best way is to survive the accident. Best wishes, Sorcha!

Sorcha, I'm glad that your boy's OK, it's certainly a scary one for Moms. When I had my one big one, [and luckily I landed on my head, so no real harm done] my Mother fainted when she saw me in hospital, I was so white she couldn't tell where my face ended, and the bandages began. It put me off riding bikes completely, still like them, but don't want to own one now.
Good health to Luke......Giok

sorch, honey, sorry for all your stress and grief over this one.
Glad he came thru...as an E.M.T. many riders have not been so
lucky as Luke...Lucky Luke...Mark Knopfler had a motor cycle
accident last month and suffered 6 broken ribs and a broken
collar bone...he did not come out so lucky, but still alive.
(He is the british guitar player who was with Dire Straits)
Did the bike survive? (if not - a good time to re-consider if
that is the best choice for transportation...) I have h3eard
some riders call a bike wreck a "scattered scooter" I play at
a place called Scooters, but do not ride. I was in a bicycle
accident once, though (hit and run)and had dozens of stitches
and made it thru..I am glad Luke did not break anything
(except skin). Should i bring a present of a helmat (brain bucket!)
when i come? take care...

Well, I don't go for Harleys.....too much stone-age technology, but as to bikes..............

For those of you who can't figure out why anyone would ride or that this should be a warning or whatever.....I cannot begin to explain and you will probably never understand the reasons we ride. I'm of moderate intelligence, know all of the dangers, have been to the hospital, have lost a friend and seen others crippled, and all that stuff. There is just something special about motorcycles.

Some refer to it as freedom but that's not really it. Nor is it simple thrills or exhilaration. And it certainly isn't just for "transportation." No real bike nut rides just to get somewhere.

It's 7 PM on a warm summer evening and you go out to a winding stretch of highway and wick it up. You're aboard a machine that exceeds the legal speed limit in first gear. You sweep along through esses and rocket down the short straights and when the road comes to an end you take a leisurely ride on a different road to unwind and just cruise along for miles. Maybe you find another route again and another road that leads home and you ride it with enthusiasm like a child with a new toy. If I could bottle up those feelings and sell them, they'd outsell cocaine.

You need a healthy respect for the machine you're on and the power it has but you don't think about the injuries and deaths or even simple fear......None of that matters and it isn't even a factor. It's a feeling and you either have it or you don't. Understanding the dangers and the potential loss of life or injury means next to nothing to you. Ya' know, when I came home from the hospital after by-pass surgery and after the aneurysm as well, within a week I had gone out on one of those "profficeincy rides." You love 'em or you don't, but lecturing a true bike nut on the dangers is a waste of time......we really don't care.

Spaw---half a million miles and still going

Spaw, that's it exactly, except there aren't that many highways like that in the UK....

I'm off mine for health reasons, and now even though it's 3.30am, I just want to get on it and go for a blat somewhere..... booo hoooooooo!

I cringe inwardly when I see kids riding round with no helmet on, or just shorts and a Tshirt.... how much skin they going to lose on just a short skid? And yet, even here, the only legal requirement is a helmet secured properly.

I would never consider getting on a bike without a leather or a lid, or my big boots. Dropped a bike on my leg once, had I been wearing trainers or ordinary street shoes, my foot would have been crushed. Big biker boots saved it.

I hope he continues to ride, but I hope he does it as safely as he can.

Love ma Cycle Sorcha. Have ridden a Triumph for 24 years...even bought one when I crossed the pond....nothing like a blap..but a Helmet and Leather and Boots and Gloves.........as a Commercial used to say about Seatbelts..."you know it makes sense". Have had one bad one years back and the Lid saved my life.
Hope all is well...and speedy recovery to all of you!! The Family from the scare and Luke from the injuries...I hope the scare stays with Luke for a wee while longer...I mean that in a constructive way!

Now I see why you were sleepless! (Got a PM late last night)
I simply gave up on 2-wheel powered vehicles after 2 accidents. Fortunately, they were both at a fairly low speed, and I was wearing a helmet both times. The 2nd one probably would have killed me without that helmet...yeah, make that VERY probably.

Thank God for helmets...and ditto for seatbelts (got saved by one of those once too).
