Well, my bad. I should have known that Malaika is an award wining South African Afro-pop group. This group is mentioned numerous places online, including Afropop Worldwide website that highlights the Kora 2004 Awards. Malaika {South Africa} and JJC & 419 Squad (Nigeria/ UK) wone the award for Best African Group.

This song is definitely not sung in English. One commentor mentions that it is very popular in SA {which I assume means the nation of South Africa} so maybe it was recorded by the South African group Malaika.

The individuals who posted comments about the mhla uphel amandla video refer to it as being a South African song. I know that "amandla" means freedom in Zulu, but that and a few more words are all the KwaZulu I know.

The Kumasi Project provides the lyrics of the song "Malaika" as found on the recording "Mama Africa: The Very Best of Miriam Makeba".

The Kumasi Project also provides this commentary about the song:
"Authorship of Malaika is disputed. A Kenyan named Fadhili William recorded it a couple of times in the late 50s and early 60s. He says he wrote it and he is generally recognized as the owner. Miriam Makeba made it famous with her recording of it in 1964(?). Angelique Kidjo copied Makeba's version sound for sound as best she could but between the two of them, they really mangled the words in Swahili. You can hear Makeba singing the song to her husband Stokely Carmichael and Angelique put all that stuff in her song not knowing what she was saying. It appears the song was written in the 40s by a Tanzanian but two different people are credited. So no one really knows (except for Fadhili and the Tanzanians).

Malaika was transcribed in Joan Maw's Twende! A Practical Swahili Course and also in Magdalena Hauner's Nyimbo za Kiswahili. The early Fadhili William recording (1959) has only two verses and so do these two transcriptions. However, Mariam Makeba's recording has a third verse (the Pesa... verse) and a later record by Fadhili also has the Pesa verse. It is likely that Fadhili did not write the original two verses but may have authored the "pesa" verse. It appears from Kwame Bandele's internet posting that Grant Charo gets credit for the song in the Hauner book. Other East Africans claiming to have written the song are Lucas Tututu from Mombasa and Adam Salim from Tanzania. Researcher Flemming Harrev says that Salim claims to have written the song while living in Nairobi in 1945-46. He recorded the song for Columbia Records in 1950. Fadhili is now generally recognized as the composer for royalty purposes."...

It may have been a typo, but correction, KiSwahili is a primarily a mixture of one or more Bantu languages and Arabic..Swahili is traditional to East Africa and parts of Central Africa-not West Africa.

The Swahili language, is basically of Bantu (African) origin. It has borrowed words from other languages such as Arabic probably as a result of the Swahili people using the Quran written in Arabic for spiritual guidance as Muslims.

As regards the formation of the Swahili culture and language, some scholars attribute these phenomena to the intercourse of African and Asiatic people on the coast of East Africa. The word "Swahili" was used by early Arab visitors to the coast and it means "the coast". Ultimately it came to be applied to the people and the language.

Regarding the history of the Swahili language, the older view linked to the colonial time asserts that the Swahili language originates from Arabs and Persians who moved to the East African coast. Given the fact that only the vocabulary can be associated with these groups but the syntax or grammar of the language is Bantu, this argument has been almost forgotten. It is well known that any language that has to grow and expand its territories ought to absorb some vocabulary from other languages in its way.

A suggestion has been made that Swahili is an old language. The earliest known document recounting the past situation on the East African coast written in the 2nd century AD (in Greek language by anonymous author at Alexandria in Egypt and it is called the Periplus of Erythrean Sea) says that merchants visiting the East African coast at that time from Southern Arabia, used to speak with the natives in their local language and they intermarried with them. Those that suggest that Swahili is an old language point to this early source for the possible antiquity of the Swahili language.


Words from Other Languages

It is an undeniable truth that Arab and Persian cultures had the greatest influence on the Swahili culture and the Swahili language. To demonstrate the contribution of each culture into the Swahili language, take an example of the numbers as they are spoken in Swahili. "moja" = one, "mbili" = two, "tatu" = three, "nne" = four, "tano" = five, "nane" = eight, "kumi" = ten, are all of Bantu origin. On the other hand there is "sita" = six, "saba" = seven and "tisa" = nine, that are borrowed from Arabic. The Arabic word "tisa" actually replaced the Bantu word "kenda" for "nine". In some cases the word "kenda" is still used. The Swahili words, "chai" = tea, "achari" = pickle, "serikali" = government, "diwani" = councillor, "sheha" = village councillor, are some of the words borrowed from Persian bearing testimony to the older connections with Persian merchants".

One has to be a bit careful about literal translations. The line "Nashindwa na mali, sina we" literally meaning "I am defeated by wealth, without you" could probably be better rendered as "I am worth nothing, without you". The phrase "without you" (sina we) is an important part of the statement.

I have a boyfriend from Cameroon, he brought me best of Angelique Kidjo - and suddenly this song from my childhood filled the room, I have not heard it since me and my friend learned it orally from her uncle who had worked in Africa. We didn't know what the words ment, how to write it or what language it was. We were eight and playing we were africans... It was the first foreign song I learned, before I was able to speak english. And there it is, and I burst into tears, thinking of that particular friend, who is now dying of cancer, 35 years old, and I am desperate to sing it to her again, maybe for the last time... I was then so grateful when I quickly found this website.
If anyone could translate it for me into french I would be so grateful.
