The sun is out, the sky is cloudless, and there's a nice breeze going on, making it uncharacteristically cool in Tennessee this time of year.

Bronchitis is ebbing, and I may be able to sing again soon; track bike (bicycle) is in the shop so that I can ride it soon and make like Lance (in my mind, of course); Democratic convention is giving me new hope; the elekatricity and water are flowing into the house without problems; and my dose of caffeine this morning was not too much, and not too little. And finally, I picked up my Alvarez Yairi to play for the first time in months, and discovered that the last time I played it, I had restrung it!

My Blessing today was waking up and looking back on a great night of Folk Music at Lincoln Folk Club last night. Also knowing that I live in a real Folk Club area and I can get my fix of Folk music almost any night of the week without having to travel far. I am Blessed. Be Blessed.

When I was a kid, I once said "I can't wait!" when I was asked by an adult about some upcoming event. I can't remember exactly who the adult was, or what they said, but it had something to do with me wasting all the time between Now and Then, as if it didn't matter. Life's to short to not at least try to make the most of each bit of time. I'm glad I learned that and actually remember it sometimes.

There will always be some sort of unpleasantness to get through. Right now, I feel like many of us in the US are just 'getting though', waiting for something better. Maybe other places too. People, including me, can get cranky and take it out on others. I'm very thankful to, and for, the ones who don't let the hard times get them down enough to try to bring others down with them. I'm thankful they can still find wonder in life, humor and warmth, and share it with others. It reminds me that there's joy to be had, whether now or just around the corner.

[pre-apology for the length of this]
I was depressed and lazy this spring and didn't chop down the raspberry thicket in the back yard which threatened to take over, as I'd planned to do. I didn't cut down the adolescent tree back there. Later on, I noticed a catbird carrying twigs into the thicket. She'd just sit on top of the mass and sort of sink down into it, then would fly out to sit on the branches of the formerly-doomed tree and sing. A while after that, I watched her fly out and back again with a mouthful of bug.

At some point, the babies began fluttering up to sit on the higher plants. One time, one flew directly at the open (screened) window from which I watchted, veering off at the last minute to go back down to park on a plant.

A few days ago, I heard a horrible screeching coming from the bushes and went down to take a look. There were no other critters about, but the whole lot was out of the nest and flitting around in the depths of the thicket. The next day they were gone. I figure they'd been having and argument along the lines of "You kids are a pain. Get the heck out and feed your own selves!" "But Maaaa...!" I've heard them calling from the woods in back of the house.

It's not like this sort of thing doesn't happen all the time. What makes me really happy is that sometimes... I notice it.

No way to even beging to give thanks for the blessings in my life. I give thanks for the healings in my family, from my Mother to a granddaughter, both of whom had frightening accidents recently and are recovering fully. Some blessings seem small, and most are unexpected. I re-connected this week with someone I knew back in the early 60's, and we've had a great time getting to re-know each other.
Even though I only knew him for one year in college, I never forgot him. He was a young farm kid with a talent for rockabilly who formed a band (despite his barely being able to play guitar) recorded a 45 rpm of songs he wrote, and got area dj's to give him airplay by giving them fresh-picked strawberries from his father's farm. Strawberry payola. His record hit the top 40 on the Chicago radio stations.

Those were the days.

Almost as good as tomorrow.

Jerry

When you walk in the wilderness (or go anywhere for that matter) make a point of talking about things along the way.

"See that tree with the twisted trunk?"

"Look at that nest up there"

and so on, then you'll have landmarks to find your way back.

It works just as well in town

"Turn right at Walgreens", "Turn left by the white wall with the balls on top"

Something I'm thankful for today is that my husband and I had our very first guitar lesson. Not only that, but we made a new friend as well...30 minutes of guitar lessons and an hour and a half of chat time about country living, homesteading, organic gardening, ladybugs, homeschooling.....yep.....a new musical adventure and a new friend all in the same day....a definate blessing!

JtS lost his wedding ring today. He thought it slipped off his finger while his arm was hanging out the window of the van while he was driving in town. He felt pretty bad about losing it, and to take some of the sting off when I would find out about it, he bought me a DVD of a movie called "Big Fish".

Turns out, a big theme in that movie is about a man losing his wedding ring, only to have it returned to him.

Just a few minutes ago, JtS, came out to my little shed/office, and there, on his finger, was his wedding ring. He said that, as he was getting into bed, he heard a little "clink" sound, and then the sound of something rolling, and he looked on the floor and there it was.

That's Perfection.

Little Hawk's post about the gift of life has reminded me of this, which is attributed to "An Unknown Soldier" and which I first read quoted by Rick Wakeman in his autobiography:

I asked for strength, that I might achieve;
I was made weak, that I might learn humbly to obey.

I asked for health, that I might do greater things;
I was given infirmity, that I might do better things.

I asked for riches, that I might be happy;
I was given poverty, that I might be wise.

I asked for power, that I might have the praise of men;
I was given weakness, that I might feel the need of God.

I asked for all things, that I might enjoy life;
I was given life, that I might enjoy all things.

I got nothing that I asked for - but everything I had hoped for;
Almost despite myself, my unspoken prayers were answered.

I am among all men most richly blessed.

With Love,

I had a very long day in town today, 7 hours and much of it in 100 degree heat, starting with 2 hrs sitting on an uncomfortable chair in my writing group, then 15 (count 'em!) different stops to make. A day like this would have had me in tears 6 months ago, before my hip replacement...all that in/outing from the car, trekking across parking lots, endless walking thru vast DIY stores.    I'm knackered tonight...but not in pain. Makes all the difference...a real blessing.

Always strikes me as interesting that the word blessing originally means "wound", as in the French verb "blesser", and its origin is in the word for "bloodsign".
Said McGrath........
God was Blessing people way back in the old testament..how can you say that blessing originally means wound??or that its origin is in the word for bloodsign. Best wishes.

I am blessed with so much, I lost count. I have a job that I love (for at 6 months out of every year), I have a family that I love and am loved by, I have Jason who loves me unconditionally (usual in dogs, often rare in humans!), Clancy Dog is still going strong at 13, I have a roof over my head, food in my belly, and I count my wealth not in terms of money but in the friends I have made. And that includes the virtual ones on Mudcat.

We can see the stars really clearly in the night sky here. That's kind of surprising to me because we're fairly close to a small city.

It's a beautiful night with a crescent moon, Venus close by shining very brightly, and the crickets are singing to me. And I've got lots of paint, brushes, and canvas.

Yesterdays blessing was Manitas coming home with an unexpected gift of the complete 'St Trinians' films on DVD, so I KNOW my afternoon will be better! Blue Murder at St Trinians

Tomorrow's blessing is going to be a morning of archaeology, something I've not had chance to do for about 20 years.... let's hope the weather is as beautiful as it is today.

  • Both these guys are smart and handsome and sweet.

  • My wife puts up with me.

  • I'm in good health for 57 (except for the teeth, except for the teeth).

  • I really enjoyed some Flaco Jimenez recordings....

  • I've got Mudcat to make me laugh, groan, and feel warm fuzzies.

I'm thankful for the laughter and friendship that were shared today. I'm also thankful that today was a day without a deadline, without a project due, without a presentation to make but rather a day where I could get some things done around the house and even a bit of time to do nothing more than play with my puppy. Life here has been hectic and the opportunity to do nothing was most appreciated!

In a nutshell, I'm thankful my family, Jan, and free time!!!!!!!!
