How do you log in to this forum if you're not at a fixed computer?(i.e on a network that can't hold cookies after you log off)

If you can't keep the cookie on the machine, or if you're using a strange/different machine, you need to go to the "Quick Links" box at the top of the threads page. The "login" is the second or third item on the drop-down. You'll have to do it each time you come here.

The option, frequently used by people who check in from work or the library, is just to take the GUEST tag and add your 'cat name just as you've done above. The only real disadvantages of that are:
that anything you post as "GUEST, ReallyMe" won't show up in a "name trace," if you should want to search back to look at what you've posted
and:
it's inconvenient if someone wants to PM you
and:
You can't read any PMs you've received unless you actually log in.
and:
Since anyone not currently logged in gets the GUEST tag, anyone with sufficient "malicious intent" could pretend to be you, although that has not happened to any great extent.

I could have mentioned that at least in IE you can click the "File" tab at the top and choose Import/Export and save your session cookies to a floppy disk. Then you'd have to do the same thing to "import" them back to IE before you hook up to the 'cat again.

Of course, any system that autodeletes cookies may have disabled the import/export too, and it seems a lot more complicated than just logging back in to me.

If it works on the machines you use, it might be useful if you have quite a few sites that you'd like save cookies for - say your investment plan, and bank accounts and such - as well as mudcat.

Just don't forget your password(s).

I'd think the help forum remains the best place for that type of query. One disadvantage of this forum for a user is that quite a bit of missinformation (not from you!) can come before a "correct answer" is given.

Oh and another one related to you comments (just given here for reference) is that there are certain issues concerning registration, e.g. forgotton password and different email address to the one registered with, that can only be dealt with privately. You could for example need to confirm a real name to make sure that the person is the member they think they are!

The original question seemed to be asking "where's the login," which was answered first. Since there was a little "extra" conditional query, the comments were added just in case some 'reassurance' was wanted.

Obviously, any questions about registration and identity should go to HELP, but it's easy to find, and I didn't read that in the question. The Login isn't necessarily as obvious.

And, since he can't read a PM without being logged in, he'd probably wait a long time for an answer about how to log in with the method suggested as a joke in the last post.(?)

I've thought long and hard about this John.

Firstly I wish to make it clear that I was only trying to expalin that reasons for suggesting the help forum can exist. I would hope that my use of brakets did indicate that - I do respect your knowledge and the time and research you give to your tech advice here.

Secondly, I'd missed the joke - Sorry. Before resigning here, I did help with registration problems as a Joe Clone. I was looking at it from the angle of bieng frustrated and having to make priviate (email) contact to sort some things out when someone may have given wrong advice in a thread.

I just thought you'd probably missed the joke. It wasn't really that good a joke - sorry about that. Seems like they lose all the humor when you try to explain them, so I should have known better.

I meant to agree with your suggestion about using the Help page when appropriate, and should have said so more clearly. It was an appropriate thing to note. I didn't intend any argument or criticism of your suggestion.
