Subject: Trip to Filo/Philo. Where's that? From: greg stephens Date: 19 Jun 03 - 01:48 PM Have come across a tune of this name in two or three old fiddler's MS books. Anybody know where Filo is, or anything else about the tune...which is quite odd. |

Subject: RE: Trip to Filo/Philo. Where's that? From: GUEST,Q Date: 19 Jun 03 - 02:51 PM Maybe I can learn something here. I know very litle about fiddle tunes, but in Ceolas, with several entries, Philo followed by a number occurs. Example: ALE IS DEAR, THE, Scottish, reel, B minor Standard AAB. Trad-------------- Philo 1042, Boys of the Lough - "The Piper's Broken Finger" (1942). Is "Philo" a listing in this reference? |

Subject: RE: Trip to Filo/Philo. Where's that? From: michaelr Date: 19 Jun 03 - 03:11 PM Philo is a small town in Mendocino County, California. The local public radio station puts on the annual Wild Iris Folk Festival. Don't know if there's any connection. Cheers, Michael |

Subject: RE: Trip to Filo/Philo. Where's that? From: GUEST Date: 19 Jun 03 - 04:07 PM The Boys of the Lough recorded several albums in the 1970s on the Philo Record label, including The Piper's Broken Finger (Philo 1042). At the time, Philo Records was an independent company in North Ferrisburg, Vermont, about 12 miles south of Burlington. It was named after the nearby Mt. Philo. Philo Records went bankraupt in the early-1980s and was bought by Rounder Records. |

Subject: RE: Trip to Filo/Philo. Where's that? From: Gypsy Date: 20 Jun 03 - 11:14 AM Bless your heart, MichaelR for knowing about our little town! But Philo is a pretty common name, and seems to be all over the place. Including as a man's name, as well as a town. |

Subject: RE: Trip to Filo/Philo. Where's that? From: greg stephens Date: 20 Jun 03 - 04:22 PM A small town in California doesnt seem an obvious candidate for naming an old English(??) fiddle tune after, but it could be. It's not a seaport is it? Is the Californian one named after somewhere else, perhaps, and if so where? Anybody got accesss to local history information? |

Subject: RE: Trip to Filo/Philo. Where's that? From: michaelr Date: 20 Jun 03 - 07:45 PM Greg, if it's indeed an old English tune, the possibility of a connection seems remote. It's not a seaport! Gypsy may have info on local history. Cheers, Michael |
