Infact (you'll no doubt be disappoinred to learn) I have been to Hull before: about ten years ago Sue and I spent a jolly afternoon driving round and round the city centre trying to find a way out.

Are you sure you're not claiming a prior Hull visit to avoid the initiation Steve? Well, no matter. As it'll be your first visit to "Sea Fever" there will, of course, still be the ceremonial Mudcat keel-haul in the Marina....

Steve & I have just bought our tickets to both the Sat & Sun evening events. Sat concert is £6 and Sun 'survivors session' is £3, but there's a discount of a pound if you buy both, i.e. £8 for the two. If you're buying both, remind the ticket office about this offer.

Minerva sounds good to me - we have to be along the dock, not the Green Bricks, the other one, 2.45- 3.30pm but I reckon that it is a good place to park for the rest of the day and evening. Great Beer- hope Willa and Geoff Lawes will be there too to sing the muddy Humber song!

Do they allow Beverlonians in the Minerva? I'm a Hullensian really but living in Beverley as you know .

I'm hoping to get over to Hull on the Saturday but will be running my usual "Last Sunday of the Month" session in the Sun on Sunday so can't get to Hull then. Our Tuesday Acoustic Workshop was so full last night that people couldn't get in the room - I did plug Sea Fever to those that could get in!

Question for Hull catters:
Are there any town centre pubs you'd particularly recommend for good/cheap food? I know Durty Nellies do the 'two meals for a fiver' deals - are there any other good ones?

Julie,
The Three John Scotts is a Weatherspoons pub at the corner of Lowgate and Alfred Gelder St. They serve real Ale and generous portions of good food at very reasonable prices, inc. two meals for one price deals. Their Treacle Sponge is especially recommended!

The Olde White Harte certainly used to do some good food but it's been a while since I've tried them so I can't comment on price or quality. The Minerva does good grub but it's likely to be busy this weekend!

If you like Chinese, the May Sum buffet restaurant opened recently on Saville St (just outside the old town off Queens Gardens).

This might be helpful:

Virtual Pub Crawl of Hull

It's a bit out of date but most of the comments still apply, and the usual suspects can probably answer specific queries.

Fabulous singing and athmosphere in the Old White Hart at the welcome "do" last night. It was fascinating watching the faces of each song leader as the 100 or so voices joined in the chorus and made a "wall of sound". Big grins all round :-).

Too true Bassic, a golden evening - singing there was like floating on a fluffy cloud......

A very loud fluffy cloud -- I had to turn my hearing aid down! I think I managed to pick up the choruses I wasn't familar with -- it's very difficult to lip-read someone with a beard. What great weekend. Can I book now for next year?

And particular thanks to Les for the hospitality.

I'm going to lie down and rest my voice now, and practice my bones.

Steve

Well done Hull.

What a great atmosphere over the whole weekend.

The White Hart deserves special mention. 30 odd of us went back on Saturday night for an encore.

There even was an amazing bones workshop with about 15 students an three "tutors" Great stuff.

Well done to all involved, organisers, artists and visitors and locals. This weekend was the first time I have had the chance to properly sample the athmosphere of the festival in my own home town and I have to say it was teriffic. It was especialy nice to hear and see contibutions from outside the UK but still definately from the "tradition". There also seemed to be a good responce from the general public in Hull to the invasion of their usual weekend drinking haunts!! Very few puzzled looks and lots of big grins, curious noses pressed against crowded pub windows and lots of joining in with the familiar choruses. Well done Hull. Roll on next year:-)

It was a great weekend!

Full marks to the floor singers who filled the gaps between the guest spots at The Minerva singaround on Saturday & Sunday.

It was a delight to perform on the main stage on the quayside and having the audience wholeheartedly joining in the choruses.

Hull Sea Fever - one of the best yet!

Here's to 2004!

I thought the guest spots were to fill the gaps between the floor singers...!

I was chuffed to sing a couple of songs and not hear anyone else sing them! And pleased to find my "Crabfish" was a version of one given in Stan Hugil's book, since it had no other sea connection at all, apart fro the crab ... I got it personally from Sean Cannon, you know!

...yes, really enjoyed it. I've been playing the CD I won in Friday night's raffle (ok, so I did help sell the tickets, but I won it fair and square, honest!!!) by the Sheringham Shantymen. Very good.

Incidentally, if anyone spots a letter on the letters page of the Hull Daily Mail from a Julie B of Milton Keynes, could you let me know? Ta.

Good point Guest of Guests. Our City Council (ably financed by such as me!) provide this low-cost entertainment each year, and although there are no plans to cease in the future, friendly encouragement would help if it ever becomes a choice between the Shanty Festival and something else. We (the Citizens of the Fair City of Kingston upon Hull) know that this is a useful way of getting people to visit. I'll try to find an appropriate email link.

I'd been meaning to ask ... the Sunday night "Survivors' session" was advertised as "an informal singaround", but it was all rather formal, with chairs in rows and all the celebs being introduced to do one song. Julie & I left before the end; did it turn into a proper singaround later? The venue had ben changed from the Law Courts to the Maritime Museum, so maybe that had a bearing?

Steve

Steve,

Yes it was rather formal for an advertised singaround and that was how it continued to the end. Maybe the opulent surroundings of the "Court Room" was not the ideal venue for a singaround?

I understand that you sang at some of the singarounds at the Minerva. Was it at any of the sessions that I compered?

Dave Robinson.

I must have seen and heard you if you were in the Minerva between 11.30am and 2.00pm on Saturday or if you were there on Sunday from 3.00pm until 5.00pm.?

Hi Dave,
Are you Dave Robinson? Steve and I were there from the very beginning of your Sat am session. I sang "A brisk young sailor courted me" and "I am a Rambling Irishman". You also spoke briefly to Steve & I outside the Minerva about 4.30pm on Sunday. Does that help?!!
Cheers,
Julie

Hiya Michael,
Yes, I know you. Were you at the festival last year too, because I'm sure I recognised you from somewhere else? We also said hello to each other at the Maritime Museum on Sunday evening just as Steve and I left at the interval. The only trouble with a weekend of wall-to-wall singing is that we don't get the chance to chat as much as we might like, so it's a good thing we have the Mudcat!

As for Steve's hat, he only wore it on the Sunday - a wide brimmed khaki "Tilley" style hat. I'm afraid I had to insist he took it off as we walked back to the hotel at 1am Sunday night through a rowdyish Hull centre, lest it attract unwanted attention! :)

Julie

Hi Anne,
Thanks for that! Yes, it was the noise from an event in Queen's Gardens. Steve & I were discussing it with Maggie & Les on the Sunday night and I decided to raise the issue directly with the Council and also e-mail the Hull Daily Mail. I got a letter back from Hull Council yesterday, and will type the contents up later in a "BS" thread and put a link to it from here.
Cheers,
Julie
