Callie from Sydney here. My trio Touchwood (www.touchwoodweb.com) will be performing at Tolpuddle this year and we're greatly looking forward to it. Hope all you Mudcatters will make yourselves known to us - it will be nice to meet in person!

We were at the festival in 2001 and it was one of the highlights of our trip.

Been going for about 20 years and walking with my Regional and national banner every time. Played there for many years in the house bands and friends. Think I'd miss it?

The thing not to be missed is what it's all about... look for the moment when the Trade Union leaders walk through the village carrying the wreaths for the grave and lay them in the churchyard. It's small, not obvious, but incredibly moving.

There was a reminder that it was on at the Women's TUC conference 2 weeks ago.

The 2004 event is Friday 16 to Sunday 18 July.

Some folky highlights - all free except the Saturday night.

Friday 8pm - Cellidh - Some of the South West's finest traditional musicians playing the Festival warm-up session, guest musicians welcome.

Saturday - Traditional sessions all afternoon in the Beer Tent turn-up, sign in and play.

Main stage - A full afternoon programme of music for everyone, from 1pm to 6pm, including country and roots with Touchwood, The Hanes Family, Mr Love and Justice and more. A Musicians Union and Worker's Beer Tent Company showcase to spot the freshest talent coming up from the grassroots

7pm Martyrs Marquee
Tolpuddle Man. Written by Graham Moore, this play tells the story of the Tolpuddle Martyrs in words and song. This popular performance is bound to be a sell-out so book early. £10 admission.
Followed at 9 pm by the Oyster Band.

Sunday All free - 11am to 5pm - Martin Jeremiah - Brenden Coker - Billy Bragg - Dhol Blasters - Oyster Band - Asere.

Sorry Gareth, I got the information by going to Google, typing "Lord Stansgate" and opening a link "William Wedgwood Benn". The following is the relevant excerpt from the text of that link:

"Although nearly sixty-three at the outbreak of the Second World War, Benn enlisted in the Royal Air Force as a pilot officer. Over the next four years he flew on several operational missions. Given the rank of Air Commodore, Benn worked for a while as Director of Public Relations at the Air Ministry. In 1944 he became a member of the Allied Control Commission that had the responsibility of reconstructing a democratic government in Italy.

In December 1940, Benn was asked by Clement Attlee to become a Labour member of the House of Lords. At that time all peerages were hereditary and meant that on his death, the title would be transferred to his eldest son. He therefore discussed it with Michael, his eldest son, telling him that "If you don't want to go to the House of Lords, I shall turn it down." Michael had already decided he wanted to be an Anglican clergyman and replied that he (his father) could argue for socialism in the House of Lords while Tony, the younger brother, could do the same in the House of Commons. Benn took the title Lord Stansgate.

Michael and Tony Benn both joined the Royal Air Force during the war. Tony successfully served as a pilot officer in South Africa and Rhodesia, but Michael was tragically killed on 23rd June, 1944, when as a result of a faulty air speed indicator, his aircraft crashed at Chichester.

After the 1945 General Election, Clement Attlee appointed Lord Stansgate as his Secretary of State for Air. He held the post until October 1946, but continued to play an active role supporting the Labour Party in the House of Lords until his death on 17th November 1960.

Having been elected to parliament in 1950, Tony Benn became Viscount Stansgate in 1960 on his father's death. As noted above, the title had been created for Tony's father some years earlier.

As a member of the House of Lords, albeit a reluctant one, Benn was no longer eligible to sit as an MP. There was, however, nothing to stop him standing as an MP, so he stood again, and won. As he was still ineligible to take his seat, it went to the (Tory) runner-up.

Benn then campaigned for legislation to tackle this nonsense, and thus the Peerage Act was passed in 1963 (under a Tory government, incidentally). The Tory MP who had succeeded him immediately did the decent thing and resigned his seat, causing another by-election which, predictably enough, Benn won.

Let Gareth sneer with his usual ignorance (his memory may be long, but he's got that long-abandoned mouthful of a title wrong in at least three ways). The fact remains that Benn has done as much as anyone, and more than most politicians, to break down the class barriers that have defiled UK society for generations. I didn't make it to Tolpuddle, but for all Gareth's spluttering, I'm sure Benn will have had a rousing reception from his many lifelong friends in the union movement.

So I could walk over Friday night of course!! (2 1/2mies across the feilds & hills)

Some Stunning Music all weekend, & came away with a coupe of souverneirs (sunburnt ankles, & A CD.) Roll on next year....

If you get off the Waterloo to Weymouth train at Moreton of course - this is only about 5 miles from Tolpuddle.

London's Kings Cross station serves anyone arriving on trains from the north (even off-duty train drivers).

There would indeed be little point in supplying a coach to supply Tolpuddle from Waterloo - as of course you could get a train from there to Dorchester (or even Wool). However you would still have a bit of a problem -as public transport from there to Tolpuddle is not very frequent.

A shared taxi fare would not be too unreasonable however.

Is there perhaps some irony in that performing this year is Eric Bogle - coming as he is, from the very place where many of the Martyrs were transported to, thousands of miles from their homes? [Or at least all the way from the previous gig of his UK tour]

I think that not making the trip from NZ to Tolpuddle can be forgiven....After all - it is a little bit more than a five and half hour drive.

I'll be with you, in spirits, from half a world away. I can't make it in the flesh, it's a hell of a way to go. Even further than for John,in,Hull...

Two sets of my forebears lived not too far from Tolpuddle (Netherbury and Lyme Regis). Methinks they were of the same mindset as the Martyrs, for they emmigrated south (voluntarily) within a few years.

We used to celebrate the event in Wellington, NZ, in the late 50s...

Have a bloody good weekend mate! I'm having a shot for the Tolpuddle Martyrs and the TUCs of the world. Don't panic if a ghostly voice comes over your shoulder this weekend.

Correct in as much as Clement Attlee raised Tony Benn's father to the peerage. At that time the honour was hereditary, therefore William Benn's eldest son would automatically inherit the title.

This is mainly a fine day out in the country with (hopefully) summer sun thrown in.

There is the chance to listen to and/or to join in and make some music. The nature of the event means that your involvement or not in any form of politics is not really important in order to do this....

I fear that many people will be put off attending by continuing the political, if light-hearted spats with Gareth (or others) in this thread. For in truth - these do not belong here and are a hang-over from the (many) PEL/Licensing Bill ones.
