Subject: BS: A stitch in time From: katlaughing Date: 05 Aug 03 - 08:15 PM A stitch in time - what is it and how do you sew it? Why does it save nine? |
Subject: RE: BS: A stitch in time From: Amos Date: 05 Aug 03 - 08:23 PM It is a stitch taken to prevent fraying when you first notice that a seam is wearing out. It saves nmine -- or any other likely number -- because it prevents unraveling of stitches further down the seam so they do not need replacement. The statement is a metaphor for heading trouble off before it multiplies, taking timely action, etc. A |
Subject: RE: BS: A stitch in time From: mack/misophist Date: 05 Aug 03 - 09:12 PM Hear hear! I thought it was supposd to be self explanatory. |
Subject: RE: BS: A stitch in time From: Bill D Date: 05 Aug 03 - 09:36 PM **I** knew that... but now I wonder why they say a funny person/situation will "keep you in stitches" |
Subject: RE: BS: A stitch in time From: catspaw49 Date: 05 Aug 03 - 09:51 PM Because you laugh your ass off and it has to be sewn back on. Spaw |
Subject: RE: BS: A stitch in time From: Bill D Date: 05 Aug 03 - 09:54 PM oh...well, then...I'm glad I asked where I could get the straight dope! |
Subject: RE: BS: A stitch in time From: Stilly River Sage Date: 05 Aug 03 - 10:58 PM You might get a stitch in your side from laughing so hard. Like a stitch when you're running for too long. |
Subject: RE: BS: A stitch in time From: Amos Date: 05 Aug 03 - 10:59 PM Actually that is a different definition of the word, meaning a sharp pain in the side from laughing too hard for too long. Nevertheless, if you do laugh your ass off, stitiched will be called for. Please let me know when/if this occurs, as I would like to watch.... A |
Subject: RE: BS: A stitch in time From: Bill D Date: 05 Aug 03 - 11:09 PM nawww...as long as this golden bolt in my navel is kept tight, my ass is safe!(interesting idea for a spectator sport, Amos....maybe you could tickle a cheerleader of something!) |
Subject: RE: BS: A stitch in time From: katlaughing Date: 05 Aug 03 - 11:57 PM Thank you, Spaw! I wasn't asking the obvious...thought you all'd know that! Was hoping to unleash some of the famous Mudcat creativity! Of course since time is a human construct, I guess it's really moot, but I quite like the idea of some Cosmic Seamtresses/Tailors busy on some Plane taking stitches in and saving nine of something...perhaps lives of cats? Whatevah! LOL |
Subject: RE: BS: A stitch in time From: Allan C. Date: 06 Aug 03 - 12:08 AM It is a Zen thing actually. You must be the needle. You must see yourself as the camel as it passes through... Oops! Wrong metaphor. |
Subject: RE: BS: A stitch in time From: Amos Date: 06 Aug 03 - 12:33 AM Aw, kat, I'm sorry -- I thought your gears were slipping and was trying to be nice about it!! :>)) Actually there is such a thing as taking a stitch in Time, but it has to be self defined. If you try to use someone else's definition it doesn't work. No one has ever been able to explain why this is but, well, there ya go!! A |
Subject: RE: BS: A stitch in time From: Liz the Squeak Date: 06 Aug 03 - 04:06 AM Stitch in time - the one the mother of 8 children gets her husband to do in a vasectomy. I think I would prefer the Lorenna Bobbit method actually.... I feel like a nice long drive..... LTS |
Subject: RE: BS: A stitch in time From: Micca Date: 06 Aug 03 - 06:04 AM Try the Isaac Asimov short story that ends with a truly Art Thiemeian Pun!!!!!! |
Subject: RE: BS: A stitch in time From: Gurney Date: 06 Aug 03 - 06:30 AM Liz, I thought Lorenna did it with scissors, but if you say it was a golf club, I'll accept that..... |
Subject: RE: BS: A stitch in time From: katlaughing Date: 06 Aug 03 - 11:11 AM D'ya mean this one, Micca: A Niche in time saves Stein?! |
Subject: RE: BS: A stitch in time From: Micca Date: 06 Aug 03 - 01:58 PM Exacrtly Kat!!! Truly Themeian |
Subject: RE: BS: A stitch in time From: GUEST Date: 06 Aug 03 - 02:31 PM What about the guy walking down the railroad track along a bank planted with thyme - when suddenly a train appeared - if it hadn't been for the hollow hew found amongst the plantings he would have been crushed - so a niche in thyme saved Stein |
Subject: RE: BS: A stitch in time From: zanderfish3 (inactive) Date: 06 Aug 03 - 02:45 PM Actually it's a song by Mike Waterson |
Subject: RE: BS: A stitch in time From: katlaughing Date: 06 Aug 03 - 03:40 PM If the man walking by the raailroad tracks, near the growing thyme, was one's lover, one could say a niche in thyme saved thine! You're right, Micca, one our Fine Art could easily have |
Subject: RE: BS: A stitch in time From: Mr Red Date: 06 Aug 03 - 05:31 PM AND what about the fabric of the space/time continuum? I think katlaughing was just trying to needle us - in a thread - it seams. Don't say it - I got my coat on the way in........... |
Subject: RE: BS: A stitch in time From: Amos Date: 06 Aug 03 - 11:10 PM An eye for an eye, Mister Red, and remember that Que Esta, Sera, or the other way around...If anyone could make the time space continuum pleat for mercy, it would be our Katlaughing!... A |
Subject: RE: BS: A stitch in time From: Mr Red Date: 07 Aug 03 - 01:31 PM I never for one minute suggested she was a miserable pleater. Is is this deja vu all over agian? (after Yogi Berra) |
