Subject: When the gigs fall through... From: Clinton Hammond Date: 30 Aug 03 - 01:17 PM What do ya do? I guess really advice ain't so much what I'm looking for cause I know there are ups and there are downs... maybe more just co-miseration... My Septemer gig sched is as thin as Calista Flockhart... Gonna be lean lean times... What do you do with a dry dry month? :-) |
Subject: RE: When the gigs fall through... From: C-flat Date: 30 Aug 03 - 01:36 PM Take the opportunity to get out and see what others are doing. I don't get the chance to do this nearly enough and when I do, I nearly always come away with something new. It's peculiar how gigs seem to come together in a flurry, often multiple offers of work for the same night, then a fortnights' inactivity, but at least I'm not reliant on them for a living, so I can be more relaxed about it than some. If there's nobody worth the trouble of seeing locally I like to get the band together and work on some new songs, another activity which seems to come in fits and starts, either everyones got something they want to do, or we spend the evening looking at each other, doodling on our respective instruments! You can work too hard to fill your diary and end up playing gigs that aren't really suited to you. |

Subject: RE: When the gigs fall through... From: Jim Krause Date: 01 Sep 03 - 11:34 PM Hello I'm back again after a bit of a hiatus. (Jim who????) I am all of a sudden somewhat more dependent upon concert dates, dances and so forth. What do I do when the gigs dry up? Play the blues, get all depressed, play the blues and play the blues some more, I guess. I'm going through that now, too, Clint. Jim Krause |
Subject: RE: When the gigs fall through... From: Deni-C Date: 02 Sep 03 - 02:53 AM ....put on your own concerts, get together a bunch of musicians in a similar situation, book a venue, like a small theatre and put on a special event, themed could work. It's better than doing nothing and a bit of publicity brings more gigs. Of course, you might do this already........in which case i'll just go away and doodle on my instrument :-) Or get in touch with otehr musicians and ask them to pass your way gigs they can't do, maybe for 10% then you can return the compliment.... cheers deni |
Subject: RE: When the gigs fall through... From: Rick Fielding Date: 02 Sep 03 - 01:19 PM Hi Clinton. Do what I do......reflect on a wasted life and bad career choices. If your Mother is still alive, borrow money from her. Insist to yourself that it beats working in an office or a factory. but most of all......... * * * * * * don't be cynical!!! Cheers, it'll pass. Subject: RE: When the gigs fall through... From: Merritt Date: 02 Sep 03 - 01:36 PM Here's what me and/or my musical co-conspirator are doing these days: ~ developing a demo CD that targets sorts establishments and organizations we're not working with yet ~ setting up monthly singing sessions at a couple of local homes for senior citizens ~ revisiting places where I had a weekly thing going last year as general gig-icity lessened ~ trying look smart in case MacArthur Foundation staff are in the neighborhood - Merritt |
Subject: RE: When the gigs fall through... From: Clinton Hammond Date: 02 Sep 03 - 02:15 PM You've never met my mom have you Rick! LOL Demo CD eh... Now that's an idea... |
Subject: RE: When the gigs fall through... From: Amos Date: 02 Sep 03 - 02:25 PM Rick: rant on/ I am sorry -- I must insist that the entry about bad career choices be stricken. It is vaguely blasphemous, and certainly inaccurate. Let's get real about what adds value in the world, shall we??? It isn't manufacturing poonjammy widgets or stealing from taxpayers. OK? OK? We got that all clear now? If you're gonna talk BS, Rick... /end rant |

Subject: RE: When the gigs fall through... From: Cluin Date: 02 Sep 03 - 04:51 PM Hang in and learn/write/steal/perfect some new songs and tunes. My September is booked solid right now, but by November I'll get a bit more free time. Then I'll paint and maybe think about that next CD thing too. |
Subject: RE: When the gigs fall through... From: Clinton Hammond Date: 02 Sep 03 - 05:00 PM I'm afraid to hang in... there'a keg of guinness in my basement that's bad to me when I hang in... :-) |
Subject: RE: When the gigs fall through... From: Amos Date: 02 Sep 03 - 06:12 PM That's a song that should be written, Clint...Guinness is bad to me, whenever I let it be, tadatoodatoodadee, tummmtyumpty ump.... I expect a rough draft in 24 hours. OK? A |
Subject: RE: When the gigs fall through... From: greg stephens Date: 02 Sep 03 - 06:44 PM Lie in bed all day and read books. Occasionally get up to look at daytime TV. Occasionally go out to the pub. That's what I do,anyway. |
Subject: RE: When the gigs fall through... From: M.Ted Date: 02 Sep 03 - 09:19 PM Call the temporary agency and bug them for short term writing gigs--Then use the office time to hustle up more gigs-- Deni-C has got it right, as well. Or maybe nearly right--Producing something for yourself is one of the all time great ideas--well, not necessarily great, but it'll keep you busy-- I used to do it a lot--the downside is that when you include other performers, they often begin to think that you are taking advantage of them, that you are giving yourself the spot in the program that they deserve, that you are making a lot of money and stiffing them--the other problem is that you put your energy into all the details of putting on the event instead of practicing--the upside it that you get to feel like you are the boss--Forget about the money though, there won't be any left at the end of the night-- |
Subject: RE: When the gigs fall through... From: Hrothgar Date: 03 Sep 03 - 04:39 AM If you start watching daytime TV, you'll be going to the pub a lot sooner! :-) |
Subject: RE: When the gigs fall through... From: Roger the Skiffler Date: 03 Sep 03 - 04:45 AM Well at least there's a song in it somewhere: "When gigs fall through Fall through for you It hurts me too" Good luck! RtS (who's never ever likely to have a gig) |
Subject: RE: When the gigs fall through... From: Grab Date: 03 Sep 03 - 07:38 AM Hey, if you've got a keg of Guiness, that's your meals sorted anyway... ;-) |
Subject: RE: When the gigs fall through... From: GUEST,Les B. Date: 03 Sep 03 - 11:24 AM I see a sticker on lots of musician's instrument cases in these parts - "Real musicians have day jobs!" |
Subject: RE: When the gigs fall through... From: GUEST Date: 03 Sep 03 - 11:27 AM how about getting a real job? |
Subject: RE: When the gigs fall through... From: Clinton Hammond Date: 03 Sep 03 - 02:06 PM F@ck that! Besides, I can't halfway do anything as well as I do gigs... Day jobs... pfft... Why do you think I've always wanted to be a musician? To avoid the hell that is a day job... |
Subject: RE: When the gigs fall through... From: greg stephens Date: 03 Sep 03 - 02:34 PM Clinton, why not try starting a thread on Mudcat about being short of gigs, and see if anything turns up that way? |
Subject: RE: When the gigs fall through... From: Clinton Hammond Date: 03 Sep 03 - 02:35 PM I thought that was what I did Greg! LOL |
Subject: RE: When the gigs fall through... From: Cluin Date: 03 Sep 03 - 07:27 PM And I think we've seen what happens too. |
Subject: RE: When the gigs fall through... From: M.Ted Date: 03 Sep 03 - 08:07 PM Actually, Clinton, my real advice is to start getting a Christmasparty/New Years eve set together and, as soon as possible, start making calls to get those bookings--If you want to work during the day, you can either work up solo instrumental versions of Christmas carols or find a flute/violin/reed playe/mando picker/Hawaiian steel player to cover the melody and find a gig for the month in a department store or mall. And don't say you can't do Christmas music--you can do Xmas stuff in any Genre--I have got Box Car Willie's Christmas Album, James Brown's Santa's Got a Brand New Bag, Tiny Tim's Christmas Album, and even "A Surfer Christmas", and that was just from bargain bins-- If you book yourself real solidly from Thanksgiving to New Years Eve(and even a bit after, as there are a lot of offices that hold their holiday party after the actual holidays are over) you may have made enough money to go somewhere warm for February, which, at least for me, was always the worst month for bookings-- |
Subject: RE: When the gigs fall through... From: Raptor Date: 04 Sep 03 - 07:19 PM Clinton I've a great Idea. We do a couple of Clinton Hammond House concerts! One here in Barrie and One in Orillia at Little Hawks Place we could advertise them at $15 a head and make you a bit of bread and Little Hawk And I can heckle you and throw shit at you in the comfort of our own homes! Whattcha think? Raptor |

Subject: RE: When the gigs fall through... From: Clinton Hammond Date: 04 Sep 03 - 08:25 PM I'd rather live under the Wyandotte Street viaduct, cr@ppen in a shoebox, and eating from the trash bin behind Peppers Bar And Grill than even VISIT Blind River again... Heh |
Subject: RE: When the gigs fall through... From: Little Hawk Date: 04 Sep 03 - 08:28 PM You would risk letting Clinton Hammond in your house, Raptor??? Wow. I had you pegged as a guy with balls of brass, but I had no idea! Look at the expression in the man's eyes, fer gawd's sake! - LH |
Subject: RE: When the gigs fall through... From: Clinton Hammond Date: 04 Sep 03 - 08:41 PM I'd much rather be infamous than famous any day of the week! LOL (Thanks fer the good laughs LH and everyone!) |
Subject: RE: When the gigs fall through... From: harpgirl Date: 04 Sep 03 - 09:00 PM Clinton, you need to buy your own pub and then you can be the house band and get rich selling the vile black stuff! (my two cents) |
Subject: RE: When the gigs fall through... From: Cluin Date: 04 Sep 03 - 09:02 PM Dawd, I can just see that! The mind boggles. The gyres do gimble and wabe. The centre cannot hold... |
Subject: RE: When the gigs fall through... From: Robin2 Date: 04 Sep 03 - 11:11 PM Geez, Guinness costs too much around here when the work is slow! Clinton, You are too good to be slow for long! Just work on new stuff, and knock 'em dead with your new set! Hubby has often said he would by a pub when times are slow music wise.... I say we would just find out the pub owner has the same problems we do! We have the only "real" jobs that matter to us, or we wouldn't do this, would we? Robin2 |
Subject: RE: When the gigs fall through... From: Raptor Date: 05 Sep 03 - 09:11 AM I'm serious we have a cupla house concerts and get him a gig in Newmarket and see if the OFS will give him a gig at brewery bay and he can stay with us that might make a rent check! Raptor We could make t-shirts that say The Clinton Hammond World Tour On the front And on the Back Barrie Ontario Canada and then Orillia Ontario Canada! |
Subject: RE: When the gigs fall through... From: Midchuck Date: 05 Sep 03 - 11:28 AM To paraphrase the Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers: Beer will take you through a period of no gigs, better than gigs will take you through a period of no beer. Peter |
Subject: RE: When the gigs fall through... From: Clinton Hammond Date: 06 Sep 03 - 11:04 AM Heh... nice one MC... So, it came up at my gig last night, the dude wants to know what I'd charge him to host a weekly 'open mic'.... But maybe that's a thread of it's own eh... |
Subject: RE: When the gigs fall through... From: Peter T. Date: 06 Sep 03 - 11:19 AM Students? yours, Peter T. |
Subject: RE: When the gigs fall through... From: Clinton Hammond Date: 06 Sep 03 - 11:24 AM Students? And teach them what? ;-) |
Subject: RE: When the gigs fall through... From: Amos Date: 06 Sep 03 - 11:55 AM Hokey Pokey? Seriously, I think you should anchor the open mike, man. Great way to guide the fun and elevate the spirits of potential folksingers, y'know. |
Subject: RE: When the gigs fall through... From: Clinton Hammond Date: 06 Sep 03 - 01:00 PM The town it's in, it'll be much more likely top 40 and 'classic' rock (whatever that means) than 'folk' music at an open mic... Down that road (I guess maybe this needs it's own thread?) I'm thinkin gin terms of what night would be best (I'd kill for a steady Tuesday night gig, but a downtown Chatham bar already HAS a KICKIN' Open Mic... Might be a stupid thing to go up against) and what to charge him... (I know things haven't been as good as they'd like to them to be, but it's still kinda got that new pub smell, and they're doing slightly better than breaking even, and they haven't even been open 9 months now...) Ya know, I think I will make this it's own thread... there... it's here http://www.mudcat.org/thread.cfm?threadid=62691&messages=1 |
