Is it called the banana belt because of the ammo clips they favor? The shape of a region? Or a fondness for tropical fruit?

i usually try to keep a snow ball from the first snow in the freezer.
I used to take them to school in the valley when i worked with disabled
kids...they were thrilled to touch it. it rarely snows in the valley
below here at less than 1,000feet elevation. We always get snow up here
at about 3,000 feet. some years 4-5 feet of it. but not in september...
more like jan-feb. It will not last...just a fore shadowing of what is
ahead in winter. and it is not even fall yet...for a few days.

In sothern New Brunswick, Canada, on August 31, we had ice on the seats of our bikes and, since the full moon was to be on the 10th, I predicted an early fall and winter... that we were two weeks ahead of normal. Last night was the first night for several that I didn't have the AC on in the house.

Yesterday morning, as I entered work, I noticed "termination dust"* on some of the higher hilltops. Widespread opinion among the staff was the same as mine: "Aw, poop."

It's supposed to go back up to the lower 80s next week.

*Alaskan-speak for the first snow that whitens the mountain tops and indicates the end of Summer. Our "hills" reach up to 10,000 ft. here in Southeastern Idaho.

They had some in Casper, too, Sorcha, but it's expected there in Spetember, at least once. I've seen ti snow there as early as Labor Day weekend! Yesterday's did melt, though, but not up on the mountain, of course.

Funny, with all that wide-open space with nothing but windbreaks of trees to stop it, I'd never thought of your area as having *mild* weather, in fact I thought it was worse over there at times!**bg**

Now, ya wanna talk banana belts, that's what we've got here. However, it's been a tad chilly of a morning lately...somewhere near 35 or so this morning. The cats' coats are getting thicker.:-)

Clinton, you unparalleled monster...you "LOVE WINTER"???? GAAAAAH!

Why is it that you and I are philosophically opposed on virtually every subject (crucial or mundane) under the sun?

You're either a very sick man or a biological curiosity worthy of close study, methinks... :-) If you and I were, through lengthy consultation, to achieve a meeting of minds it might lead to the resolution of longstanding quarrels like the Irish problem and the troubles in the Middle East and herald in a new age of peace and brotherhood on planet Earth!

Weather is pretty crazy here in the uk ..........
10pm last night I was sitting watching TV in shorts and very skimpy top with the windows open and the fan on. (This is on the North East coast where we think it's hot once the thermometer reaches 18 degrees C)
It is so hot during the day that the house just soaks up the heat. I've not had the central heating on for months.
There was a strong wind today but it was warm .......
My poor terrier who is double coated is suffering even though he has a swim in the sea every morning. Anyone out there got any tips on how to deal with this .... its all getting a bit much

How about sharing your snow Sorcha???

Hey, Clinton, I guess the part that puzzles me is...which side are you figuring to inundate? Or is it a moat you have in mind?

Regarding a move, I think there are places available in Blind River, and it gets pretty friggin' cold there. Then there's Pickle Lake and Capuscasing too. I shall enquire.

I have got to get you together with Johnny Death sometime. He's a local DJ and musician here in Orillia who would get along great with you. He sings a lot of old songs about death and dismemberment, which is where he got the nickname. Most of his proposed solutions to social problems involve massive bloodletting and forcible removal of undesirables. :-)

The weather in Ontario is gorgeous today, folks.

Bloody hot here the last couple of days, a good 8 - 10 degrees higher than the normal September temperatures. I was worried that I forgot my jacket last night, but just walking from the bus stop in my shirtsleeves, I was hot and sweaty by the time I got home....

I want my crisp September mornings back, spanking and sparkling with dew.... I love the autumn, warm enough to work outside, cool enough to still keep clothes on and dignity intact. Really looking forward to crunching through the leaves again.

Got about 4-5 inches of snow in southern Alberta. Any time in September the annuals can get killed off and cleanup for winter starts.
Anywhere along the Rockies. I remember getting chased out of a campground in Colorado on July 4.

I'd love to get to real snow, just to see it and feel it.We don't have much in the UK and precious little in Cleckheaton. One of the reasons I moved to the pennines and Yorkshire was that as a kid and teeneager, I always saw Yorkshire getting proper snow. Can only recall a few times in thiry odd years since I've lived here.

We had snow up in YNP on June 22! Also, in late August we had two inches of hail! and when me and the cook left to visit friends in Dubois (WY) last week, it was a jump ahead of snow predicted for the Tetons and Western Wyoming. Where in E. Wyoming Sorcha? around Sundance? Gillette? Lusk?

We considered staying up in YNP for the winter. Up at Mammoth. Decided to leave because we didn't like the way the concessionaire we worked for treated it's older employees (like us).

Like Clinton, I miss winter, having been born and raised in Wisconsin. Last winter I saw the Northern lights for the first time in many, many years. That was here in Missouri! I got all choked up.

Well it would certainly upgrade the quality of life around here and add great variety -- we'd have to put the Balboa Park scene on staggered shifts. There would be threads asking what to do about sand in your dobro and such...and what the best sunblock to wear in December is...the usual stuff, you know. But if everyone did, it would certainly force me to retire so I could run around visiting all my friends!! :>)

It's still sunny here in Anchorage, but nights are dropping down to freezing. I expect we will have our first snow before October. The problem with snow here is it doesn't melt off until April. Just keeps piling higher and higher. My son is waxing his snowboard and I'm thinking of finding the extension cord to plug my truck in when its cold. Still got to drain the pipes in the motorhome and put it away for the season. Too much to do, leaving town for a week tomorrow morning, so I guess I'll do all that stuff when I get back.

Nicest thing about winter in Alaska is all the opportunities we have up here to share music and friendship around a cozy fireplace.

Winter warmth to you all,
Mike

I hear don NPR today, Alaska Mike, that it is moose-mating season "up thar" and that you all have to put up the kids' swing sets etc. so that the "wander-lust" moose don't get tangled up whilst attending to more important interests! Hi Kat, It IS moose mating season now. The stupid ungulates come down into Anchorage and get tangled in swings, trellises, clothes lines, Christmas lights, etc. I expect the Anchorage Daily News will have a photo of a moose doing something stupid any day now. We get even more moose in town when the mountains get dumped on with snow. They like to walk on the plowed roads and RR tracks because it is easier for them to travel. Cars and trains kill hundreds of them each year. My son totaled his Chevy van last year after crashing into a moose that jumped out in front of him. But today I am in warm Kansas City, MO. I'll be here for a week doing some training for work. Its like summer all over again, aahhhhh.

Best wishes,
Mike

Well, LH, there is (or was) a Bullwinkle's pizza parlor in Juneau...you could ask them.

I don't live on the Big Island anymore. I'm on Oahu, which a lot of people think is the Big Island because it has the largest number of people and the biggest city, Honolulu. But it isn't. I lived in Hilo--well, actually first in Papaikou, where I had a macadamia nut orchard, and then in Keaukaha, where I had an apartment that looked out onto black lava rocks and the ocean. The "northwest corner" you're talking about is North Kohala, which is certainly spectacular. But don't forget Waipio Valley, and the Kona Coast, and the volcano.

Yes, Q, Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa frequently get snow in the winter. Some people go up there to ski. This site has a nice photo of the tropical beach in the foreground and snow-covered Mauna Kea in the background, if you ignore the stupid "snowflake" graphic.

Aloha,
Mark

HeyaMike, thanks for the great word-images...I shall now dream of great big moose tripping through the yard!**bg** Sorry to hear about your son's accident, but am assuming he is okay? Better the vehicle than the kid! You two might enjoy the following, posted by our own Lonesome EJ in Song Challenge Part 12 loosely based on a real news story. It's a great one to recite...

Bullwinkle's Revenge

A wild and mighty moose am I
I weigh nine hundred pounds
And all wise creatures give me room
When I make my nightly rounds.
I'm heedless of all rough terrain
Of river, crag and boulder
Even bears will hide, for I
Stand six feet at the shoulder!

Imagine, then, my own chagrin
As I crossed the Oslo Highway
To see this slob as he drove his Saab
With sheer abandon, my way!
Now nothing makes me deviate
From a path I set my sights on
But this scared little guy and his frightened bride
Just sat there with their lights on!

Now a moose like me can stand a lot
My calmness is surprising
But the car sat there, and the people stared
And I felt my temper rising.
I thought "how good to use his hood as my own personal ramp!"
So over the bumper and through the glass
I then began to tramp.

I crossed at last, breaking all his glass
And his cool Norwegian bearing
As the Saab disappeared, my ears were cheered
By the sound of distant swearing.
So if, some night, in a glow of light
You meet a moose out on the street
Don't stare and curse, put in in reverse
Or feel the Fury of his Feet!

All the best,

kat

Well I was right, it snowed yesterday in Anchorage. Didn't stick to the ground in town, but the surrounding mountains are solid white. Oh well. Looks like the Alaskan 4 season rule is in effect. June, July, August and Winter.

Snow was never my friend. It got in the way when I had an all night 500 miledrive to get to the next gig the next day. Now, though, the least bit of snow and ice means I am stuck in the house unless I call one of our town's two cabs. For mobility that is more than a block from home, I use an electric scooter with a range of about 20 miles before needing to be recharged. And I do go all over our two towns here to the extent that I'm now seen by some as rather eccentric. I just figure it's good for me to be SEEN any way I can because of all the gliders-through-stop-signs-with-cellphones who are intent on doing me in.

Ues, snow is my enemy now.

Let us bring on global warming as fast as we can !!!

Mike,

Would a "moosecatcher" work on your car like a cowcatcher is supposed to work on a train? Just was wondering.

What joy ....it's been cold enough to switch the central heating on this evening. Autumn seems to be back on track.
